You will report directly to our Sr. Electrical Engineering Manager, and you will work out of our South Bend, IN location.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate daily workload in the Metals Lab: receiving incoming work in Linked Information Management System (LIMS), prioritize work to meet schedule demands, and communicate work status/changes with customers and laboratory members.
- Perform cross sectioning of materials/parts and analyze using metallography techniques.
- Utilize microscope instrumentation and software to capture images and/or obtain measurements.
- Perform hardness and microhardness testing.
- Interface with internal and external customers to define appropriate test methods that effectively meet customer requirements.
- Interpret and read hardware print, process and material specification requirements as related to testing, process and application requirements (i.e. inspection procedures, ASTM, ASM, industry standards)
- Draft, revise and publish laboratory work instructions in LIMS per MatEng quality documents.
- Manage solvent, acids, bases, chemicals and consumables inventories.
- Troubleshoot and maintain laboratory test equipment.

Summary:
The purpose of the Engineering Technician is to be responsible for manufacturing quality products efficiently, accurately, safely and on time. Utilizes manufacturing equipment and in-process instrumentation to manufacture products according to standards, company policy and safety regulations. Position will report directly to the Manufacturing Engineering Manager and will take daily direction and training from members of the Engineering Team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Troubleshoots and repairs complex mechanical and electrical issues in conjunction with the manufacturing processes in assembly and provides general support to the manufacturing team.
- Provides CNC support with tramming spindles, cutting/trimming jaws and dimensional issues.
- Addresses and resolves technical issues per procedure and notifies Leads and Supervisors on any unsolved technical issues.
- Assists in driving the implementation of projects to meet due dates and timelines effectively and successfully while supporting multiple projects at a time.
- Provides technical assistance, guidance, and training to other production associates.
- Works to continually improve the setup, calibration, manufacture and test procedures used in machining/assembly.
- Communicates with engineering, production and supervision on manufacturing and functionality issues.
- Trains, mentors, supports and provides leadership to Team Leaders and Production Associates.
- Monitors, audits, and complies with Lock-Out/Tag-Out safety policy for all plant activities.
- Performs advanced troubleshooting (electrical, mechanical, CNC), and conducts studies to reduce/eliminate common defects, then recommends necessary process changes, and implements changes with minimal direction.
- Provides gaging support for assembly, working with Quality, troubleshoots measurement/gaging issues.
- Develops countermeasures to respond to customer initiated corrective actions.
- Drives lean improvement activity in the areas of changeovers, kaizen activity related to machining.
- Strictly follows company procedures, safe working practices and policies.
- Identifies reports and recommends corrective actions for any unsafe conditions or inefficient processes to Supervisor and/or Value Stream Management.
Critical Competencies:
- Must have knowledge of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) when handling materials and/or chemicals.
- Ability to set up/calibrate equipment/instruments based on Engineering/Customer requirements.
- Understanding and experience with Lean Manufacturing.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
- The ability to read and interpret documents such as general business periodicals, safety rules, quality instruction and process documentation, operating and maintenance instructions, technical and procedure manuals.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions verbally and in written form.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related field, preferred.
- 1+ years of manufacturing/ technical experience in assembly and machining, preferred.

+ Responsible for the development of all CNC machining program code.
+ Review engineering drawings and initiates changes, or recommendations, for manufacturing tools, fixtures, CNC programs, through the change control system.
+ Provides technical support to engineers to achieve improvements in cycle-time, yield, unit cost, quality, safety and compliance of production and operations processes and products.
+ Monitors instruments and equipment and collects operating data, including calibration, inspection, testing and repair activities, to assist in making on-line adjustments to instruments, equipment, or products.
+ Analyzes and resolves malfunctions and deviations of instruments and control systems to identify and resolve problems.
+ Conducts, analyses and prepares reports using metrics from salvage tracking, trending, reporting and root-cause analyses.
+ Maintains process designs to optimize process, equipment and facility use while conforming to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).
+ Completes activities of the change control policy and Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA) system in accordance with policy.
+ Work in cross-collaborative teams to execute risk management activities (i.e. pFMEA)
+ Creates conceptual designs for new fixtures and special cutting tools. Which can require tool design reviews with Tooling Team personnel, purchasing personnel and outside tool suppliers.
+ May make recommendations to leadership on plant layout.
+ May in determining appropriate machine platforms for product and review any necessary capital equipment requirements along with specifying required capital tool holders.
+ Develops manufacturing setup sheets for all machining operations for new products.
+ May recommend equipment acquisitions. Works with equipment suppliers on equipment specifications, quoting of specified equipment and delivery schedules.
+ Reviews product drawings for manufacturability. Initiates drawing changes with the product design engineer to improve manufacturing quality and reduce costs.
+ Proactively execute and support development of validation and qualification studies. Provide input to assist in developing the strategy with appropriate teams.
+ Support product launches, transfer of product and core business initiatives
+ May lead in the training of new team members as well as training for new CNC machine programs, machining processes, or machining equipment.
+ Travel as required for company business needs.
**Preferred Qualifications**
+ Experience with CAM/CAD software: Mastercam , Pro/E and Vericut
+ Direct experience with providing direct machining support such as creating new programs, troubleshooting and/or updating existing programs.
+ Advanced level of understanding machines platforms such as mills, chucker and Swiss style lathes.
+ Proven experience troubleshooting machining issues, research and developing tools, fixtures and programming solutions to solve quality and safety issues.
+ Working knowledge of industry standards and regulatory requirements. (Including, but not limited to: ISO 13485, ISO 14971, MDD 93/42 EEC, PAL, CMDR, and 21 CFR Part 820)
+ Understands impact of compliance to the requirements and how it relates to their job, or is aware of resources available to them to assist with determining impact.
