The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego (BGCGSD or Clubs) CHANGES LIVES through quality programs and guidance in a safe, affordable and fun environment. Members are involved in age-appropriate activities based upon our three priority outcomes of Academic Success, Character Development and Healthy Lifestyles.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Under the direct supervision of the Site Supervisor, the Tutor will provide virtual and classroom instruction, assistance and tutoring to students in the after-school program and will lead engaging culturally rich academic activities. We are looking for a patient, engaging, and knowledgeable English/Social Sciences Tutor to support middle school students (grades 6–8) in building confidence and skills in mathematics. The tutor will help students understand core English/Social Science concepts, complete homework, and prepare for quizzes and exams, while fostering a positive attitude toward learning. Tutors will also be responsible for working with student’s teachers to gain knowledge on what material to cover during the afterschool program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Ensures programs and activities adhere to current health and safety protocols.
  2. Supervises members in program area; continually monitors and supervise the safety and behavior of members; maintaining a safe, positive atmosphere; implement discipline techniques and classroom management.
  3. Demonstrates positive values and ethical behavior through program quality and appearance of the Club at all times.
  4. Lead organized learning activities for students to develop and strengthen their academic skills.
  5. Participates as an active, positive team member with supervisor, other staff, volunteers and members at all times by communicating effectively.
  6. Develop culturally relevant daily lesson plans and activities.
  7. As needed, differentiate lessons and activities so they are appropriate to students with various abilities.
  8. Coordinates assigned program services and cooperative learning activities for youth that are both fun and instructional. Participate in and evaluate the effectiveness of activities and events.
  9. Effectively plan and lead programs, services and a variety of activities for members; promotes and stimulates program participation. Provides guidance and role modeling to members.
  10. Responsible for daily set-up and clean-up of all materials used during the program.
  11. Ensures equipment is in good condition, with safety precautions posted (where needed) and members instructed in proper and safe use of equipment.
  12. Maintains accurate program attendance records and submits them in a timely manner.
  13. Assess facility needs and perform janitorial duties or manual labor as needed – mopping, cleaning tables, trash removal, painting, playing games, moving equipment, etc.
  14. Displays a high level of enthusiasm and commitment for activities.
  15. Provide small-group tutoring in middle school English/Social Science topics, including: Reading Comprehension, Research, Writing, Presentation
  16. Develop tailored lesson plans based on each student’s needs and learning pace.
  17. Support students with homework, test prep, and study strategies.
  18. Explain concepts clearly and in age-appropriate language.
  19. Track student progress and communicate updates to parents or guardians.
  20. Encourage critical thinking and a growth mindset in students.
  21. Create a supportive and distraction-free learning environment.
  22. Other duties as necessary

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

1.Must be at least 18 years of age with a High School diploma or GED required.

2.A minimum of 48 units of college curriculum or completion of the Classroom Assistant Proficiency Exam (CAPE) required; or a combination of knowledge and experience.

3.Two (2) years’ experience working directly with school aged youth and knowledge of youth development preferred.

4.Experience using communication tools like Zoom and Skype preferred

5.Ability to plan and implement quality programs for youth; instruct, coach and direct varied activities.

6.Skill to implement and supervise a positive learning environment, incorporating academics, enrichment and recreation; motivate and engage youth and manage behavioral challenges with peer mediation.

7.Proficient computer skills – Microsoft Office, email, internet research, social media navigation.

8.Possess skills for instruction, direction and guidance, with the ability to lead and control groups of children in various recreational and educational activities and settings.

9.Respond according to procedure for emergency and disciplinary situations.

10.Ability to effectively communicate with youth, parents, staff, volunteers, and community partners.

11.CPR and First Aid Certifications within 30 days of hire.

12.Must have the ability to be active and on your feet for a minimum of five hours each day and complete other essential functions of the position and other duties as assigned.

Position Overview:

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced high school English teacher to join our dynamic faculty team. The ideal candidate should have a rich background in English literature and writing, capable of teaching various courses including English 9(I), Honors English 9, English 10( II), Honors English 10, English 11( III) (American Literature), English 12 (IV) (British Literature), AP English Language and Composition, AP English Literature and Composition, and Academic Writing The candidate should demonstrate a commitment to fostering an inclusive and engaging learning environment while promoting critical thinking, analytical skills, and effective communication among students.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging and challenging lessons aligned with the curriculum standards and objectives of the assigned English courses.
  • Establish a supportive and inclusive classroom environment, encouraging student participation, collaboration, and respect for diverse perspectives.
  • Meet the diverse learning needs and abilities of students, including those with special needs and English language learners, through various teaching methods.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Education, or a related field; master's degree preferred.

The **Professional Tutor** will provide comprehensive in-person tutoring services that enhance students' understanding of course materials, reinforce effective study habits, and contribute to overall academic achievement.
**Responsibilities**
+ Assist in the academic area for which they are tutoring. This can be demonstrated through various means, and the tutor may consult with the Vice President of Academic Affairs(VPA), Academic Deans, or other identified personnel as necessary to evaluate credentials.
+ Provide comprehensive in-person tutoring services that enhance students' understanding of course materials, reinforce effective study habits, and contribute to overall academic achievement. This can take the form of individualized assistance or group interactions to foster a culture of academic excellence.
+ Expected to be familiar with the history of Haskell Indian Nations University, the student demographics, and the role of Tribal Colleges and Universities in higher education. The Tutor will work with the VPA to ensure that adjunct instructors have access to both online and physical historical sources for reference.
+ Expected to understand the mission framework (mission, vision, and cultural values) of Haskell Indian Nations University. The Tutor will work with the VPA to ensure that adjunct instructors have access to available references regarding the University's mission framework.
+ Complete all trainings required by the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Indian Education, and Haskell Indian Nations University.
+ Demonstrate the needed skills to work with a diverse inter-tribal student population and, in consultation with the appropriate dean, implement a culturally sensitive approach with students.
+ Participate in semester assessments of tutoring services, using standards typically established in higher education. Tutors will be provided with resources from the Office of the VPA to complete evaluations successfully.
