This position would perform environmental health duties at the entry level as a trainee. Employees are typically new hires in formal and on-the-job training in one or more areas such as food sanitation, on-site soils evaluation, private well inspection, rabies abatement, communicable disease investigation, and migrant labor camp inspection, classification of shellfish growing areas and investigation of general environmental complaints. Employees receive close supervision and guidance. Must be able to complete the applicable training in the VDH Soils program, VDH Food program or VDH Shellfish program and be able to obtain credentials in one of the following within 18 months: VDH Standardized in Food, DPOR Conventional Onsite Soil Evaluator (COSE), DPOR Alternative Onsite Soil Evaluator (AOSE), and National Shellfish Sanitation Program (NSSP) State Standardized Inspector. Employees are moved to the Environmental Health Specialist Senior position upon successful completion.

Job Duties
The position will support the environmental health functions of the Food Safety Program within the Chickahominy Health District by ensuring regulatory compliance, minimizing public health risks, and promoting consistent, science based food safety practices across the district's four localities. The EHS plays a vital role in the protection of community health by providing oversight of food establishment inspections, plan reviews, and complaint investigations; ensuring adherence to the Virginia Food Regulations and applicable FDA Retail Food Program Standards. This position also contributes to the district's mission by fostering collaboration with food operators, local governments, and public partners, while supporting education and outreach initiatives that advance food safety awareness and continuous program improvement. - Participate in education and training;

Special Requirements
Must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license.
Must receive approval as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist Intern upon hire and become a full North Carolina Registered Environmental Health Specialist within 2 years of employment.
Educational requirements in accordance with Chapter 90A must be obtained each calendar year to renew registration in order to maintain Registered Environmental Health Specialist status.

The Detroit Health Department food safety unit licenses and inspects over 1,900 food establishments. The goal of these inspections is to prevent foodborne illness and ensure that safe food is being served to the public.
Under general supervision, the Environmental Health Specialist II will perform inspections and related regulatory functions to reduce the hazard to the public from environmental health hazards.
The Environmental Health Specialist II is a senior professional position that will be expected to have significant experience and provide technical and legal support to other Environmental Health Specialists.
Duties may include food safety, child care facilities, adult foster care, body art, swimming pools, recreational facilities, medical marijuana care centers, and other regulated establishments. Will also include investigation of food borne or environmental vector disease outbreaks. Will be assigned primarily to the Food Safety or Environmental Health Program, but will be expected to be able to handle a variety of duties.

Qualifications (required):

At least three (3) years’ of experience in environmental health, food safety, investigating foodborne or environmental illness outbreaks and/or plan review.

Registered Sanitarian / Registered Environmental Health Specialist (National Environmental Health Association or State of Michigan). If the candidate is a State of Michigan Standardized Trainer, then they may be hired but must obtain the Registered Sanitarian/Registered Environmental Health Specialist Certification within 12 months of hire.

Completion of emergency preparedness training (to include, but not limited to FEMA IS Courses 100, 200, 700 and 800) within 90 days of hire is required for this position.
