Your Responsibilities as an Environmental Scientist:
- Support varied assignments including environmental due diligence (Phase I ESAs), contaminated site investigations (Phase II ESAs and extent of contamination investigations), Site Remediation (including operation and maintenance of active in-situ remediation systems), UST/AST removal/replacement, permitting, environmental compliance (including audits, inspections, and compliance program support) and related activities.
- Perform a roughly 50-50 split between field work, including soil, soil vapor, and groundwater sampling, compliance inspections, site remediation oversight, and UST/AST services, and office duties, including data compilation and reporting.
- Provide oversight and direction for subcontracted activities including drilling, monitoring, and extraction well installation, geophysical surveys, and tank repairs.
- Prepare detailed photo logs, data tables, and draft reports for manager review.
- Collect soil, soil vapor, groundwater, stormwater, and air samples.
- Oversee field activities including soil logging, well installation, and geophysical surveys.
- Develop strong understanding of environmental regulations and standards published by the US EPA, DTSC, SWQCB, ASTM, and other relevant sources.
- Actively engage in managing site safety through developing job hazard analyses, performing site safety inspections, and contributing "good catches" in support of best practice.
- Collaborate with diverse professionals including professional geologists (PGs), professional engineers (PEs), environmental scientists, licensed general contractors, licensed wastewater treatment plant operators, certified industrial hygienists (CIHs), and more.

The Environmental Scientist supports all aspects of the environmental program for Kuna Engineering and its clients throughout Alaska. The position will support clients on planning and executing environmental projects including studies, permitting, reporting, field work and regulatory compliance as necessary. APTIM is seeking an entry to Environmental Scientist on a full-time basis to participate in a variety of environmental compliance support tasks, such as hazardous waste, hazardous materials, above ground storage tanks, spill prevention, and DOT and RCRA compliance. The successful candidate will be experienced in supporting an environmental team. This position will primarily be in an office environment but may also require travel to client facilities to conduct environmental compliance reviews and/or gather related data.
**Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:**
+ Executing various work scopes, while meeting project schedules and budgets
+ Working independently and as part of a project team and be able to adjust to changing conditions
+ Working as a team member and/or team lead to assist in preparation of regulatory reports and permit applications
+ Interfacing with client personnel at a corporate and facility level

**Basic Qualifications:**

+ Related work experience of 1 - 2 years recommended.
+ Prior experience or training regarding environmental compliance and related federal and state environmental regulations desirable.
+ Strong written and oral communication skills.
+ Strong computer skills required.
+ Must have a demonstrated strength and proficiency in Microsoft applications such as MS Excel, MS Word, SharePoint Online, etc. and the ability to learn other software applications.
+ Willing to work in the field and travel to complete work.

As of the date of this posting, a good faith estimate of the current pay range for this position is $27 to $31 per hour. We are in search of an **Environmental Scientist** to join the NASA Environmental and Medical Contract (NEMCON) located at Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Florida. As a key member of the NEMCON, you will play a valuable part in supporting the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Environmental Assurance Branch (EAB) at KSC to ensure compliance with petroleum, oils and lubricants (POL) storage and management subject to Federal Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures (SPCC) regulations and storage tanks subject to Florida Administrative Codes (FAC) 62-762 and 62-761, as well as maintain and update the KSC wide SPCC plan.

**Responsibilities Include:**
- Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) for SPCC and state of Florida (Florida) regulated storage tanks regulatory compliance.
- Facilitate and assist in the preparation of required documents for registration, installation, modification, testing and/or closure of Florida regulated storage tanks, including participation in any meetings or inspections with regulatory agencies. Participate in regulatory compliance inspections. Work with the KSC contractor community to resolve any areas of concern or violations associated with these inspections.
- Prepare and submit data calls to the KSC contractor community on behalf of the NASA customer and compile/review all responses to assist in completing KSC SPCC Plan updates.
- Maintain the KSC SPCC Site Specific Plan Database, which is utilized to manage regulated POL storage activity at KSC and produce site-specific SPCC plans with input from the KSC contractor community. Brief the NASA customer on all regulated POL changes, and trends of POL storage quantity.
- Conduct and participate in engineering design reviews (EDRs) for proposed construction activities involving Florida regulated storage tanks or regulated POL to ensure compliance with internal policy and state and federal regulatory requirements and communicate requirements to project proponents.
- Participate in NASA KSC internal surveillance inspections as the Florida regulated storage tank and SPCC SME to ensure compliance with internal policy and regulatory requirements. Work with the surveillance program and KSC contractor community to provide compliance assistance and resolve findings associated with these inspections.
- Participate in internal compliance audits performed by the customer. Work with the customer and KSC contractor community to resolve any findings associated with these inspections.
- Participate in partnering team meetings as directed by the government.
- Review and understand proposed regulations or regulatory changes associated with SPCC and Florida regulated storage tanks to identify impacts and risks to NASA-KSC operations and brief the NASA customer.
- Maintain work area in a clean and orderly condition. Complies with all Company safety policies and site-specific safety procedures. Ensures safe operating conditions within area of responsibility. Identifies potential hazards, concerns, and safety incidents and reports to supervisory personnel.
**Required Experience and Skills:**
- Strong knowledge of federal regulations pertaining to SPCC, and storage tanks regulated under 62-762 and 62-761 FAC. Candidate must have the ability to review, interpret, evaluate, and convey these requirements to the NASA customer and KSC contractor community.
- Understanding of all types of Florida regulated storage tank systems and associated components and equipment including storage tank or component installation, modification, and/or closure requirements. Experience and knowledge in Florida regulated storage tank inspection, testing, recordkeeping, notification and reporting requirements for regulatory compliance purposes.
- General knowledge in other environmental media such as water quality, air quality and hazardous waste (or ability to learn) to assist these programs during times of need and to serve as the back-up SME for these respective programs if necessary.
- Mathematical skills and the ability to read, analyze and understand written information including regulations, and communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, where the information being communicated includes precise data and terminology, possibly of a confidential nature.
- Experience using GIS software to produce maps depicting POL storage, piping, spill kits, flow routes, and stormwater details for SPCC site specific plans.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Programs (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Possess valid driver's license and be eligible for clearance at a federal facility.
- Successfully pass an occupational health physical to obtain and maintain qualifications and certifications required to perform this work.
- Must possess excellent organization skills and the ability thrive in a team atmosphere including the ability to effectively communicate and work with all levels of employees.
**Preferred Experience and Skills:**
- Industry standard certification, such as Steel Tank Institute Certified Tank Inspector, or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
**Required Education:**
- Bachelor's degree in environmental science, geology, chemistry, biology, or related scientific discipline with minimum of 4 years of directly related work experience.
Working Conditions:
- Demands of work assignments may require periodic physical exertion such as walking on uneven terrain, stooping, and possibly lifting up to 25lbs, sometimes while wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) in all weather conditions and sometimes for an extended period of time.
**Clearance Requirements:**
- Requires ability to obtain a Public Trust Clearance
