Job Title: Materials Engineer
Job Description
This position is part of the materials and process engineering group, supporting plating and sealing operations. The successful candidate will work in a fast-paced, high-volume manufacturing environment, ensuring all glass-to-metal sealing processes are followed and equipment is maintained in working conditions. The candidate will closely collaborate with the manufacturing engineering team to tackle glass-to-metal sealing challenges as part of their day-to-day activities.
Responsibilities
+ Ensure all glass-to-metal sealing processes are followed and equipment is maintained in working conditions.
+ Work closely with the manufacturing engineering team to address glass-to-metal sealing challenges.
+ Prepare and maintain the thermal processing profile and environment as stated in the manufacturing and process documentation.
+ Assist in developing and implementing processing improvements using process variation management or statistical process control tools.
+ Provide training and recommendations to technicians or operators to ensure the furnace meets the desired thermal profile and conditions.
+ Assist with the maintenance of heat treatment equipment and ensure adherence to the preventative maintenance schedule.
Essential Skills
+ Previous direct work experience in glass-to-metal sealing and operating or maintaining conveyor belt or batch furnaces in a controlled atmosphere.
+ Knowledge of general heat treatments, gases, equipment operation, and their effects on metallic and glass materials.
+ Proficiency in process improvement techniques.
+ B.S. in Chemical or Materials Engineering.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ Familiarity with machining.
+ Proficiency in MS Office.
Work Environment
The candidate will work on the manufacturing floor in a fast-paced, high-volume environment. The role involves close collaboration with the manufacturing engineering team and adherence to safety and maintenance protocols.

The Materials Engineer works within the Acoustics Laboratory group at our West Chicago location. This role supports research and new product development activities by identifying, testing and validating material solutions for our customers’ applications and working with our engineering/operations teams to manufacture at scale. Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Conduct material testing, application/production evaluation studies to support new product development collaborating with staff in the Acoustics Laboratory, Sales, Engineering, Production and Purchasing departments.
  • Engage with external suppliers and identify new materials and/or process technologies to develop new product development and support existing products/applications.
  • Develop new methods or implement existing standard test methods to determine/validate performance properties for customer applications.
  • Perform cost-benefit analysis for current/alternate materials and process technology.
  • Compile data from multiple sources, identify new material trends that provide competitive advantage.
  • Provide support to address customer complaints, analyze product issues, conduct root cause analysis, propose and implement solutions.
  • Provide support to address raw material supply issues and validate materials from alternate suppliers.
  • Preparation of technical data sheets to support new and current products, technical reports and presentations for internal and external customers.
  • Communicate technical knowledge/experimental findings in written and verbal formats to peers, management, and customers in a concise and clear manner.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, create/maintain project timelines, escalate roadblocks, and drive projects to completion.
  • Fulfill duties required by the Blachford Quality Management System (ISO/TS 16949, ISO 9001;2000) and Environmental Management System (ISO 14001) and Lab Management System ISO 17025).
  • 10% travel may be required to visit suppliers, customers, trade shows, conferences and Blachford manufacturing facilities.
  • Perform other miscellaneous duties as required or requested.

Qualifications Required :

  • Master’s degree (MS) in material science/engineering, mechanical/chemical/industrial engineering or related fields, with coursework and formal training in material testing and evaluation.
  • Minimum of four (4) years’ work experience in engineering, research/product development or related field.
  • Hands-on experience testing, assessing materials and analyzing experimental data (e.g. tensile/adhesion, thermal/flammability.
  • Demonstrated experience developing prototypes, troubleshooting and implementing solutions, coordinating and conducting material testing/evaluation activities, conducting production trials, scale up activities resulting in effective solutions for customers.
  • Strong computer skills, with ability to learn new software and hardware systems.
  • Strong project management, organizational skills track record of successful multitasking.
  • Practical knowledge of APQP and/or ISO/TS systems.
  • Automotive or off-highway transportation manufacturing experience is a plus.
  • Composite, lamination and materials manufacturing experience is a plus.
  • Practical experience processing materials using die/waterjet or other cutting techniques is a plus.
  • 3DCAD, automation/machine programming (e.g. waterjet) experience is a plus.

Key Accountabilities:
  • Oversee, define and conduct metallurgical investigations on engine components from the field and in-house.
  • Define and implement tests or experiments required for evaluating engine components or resolving product problems.
  • Prioritize and analyze product problems and laboratory test results to identify root causes, and work with a team to develop corrective action plans.
  • Review new product plans and make recommendations for material selection based on design objectives, such as strength, weight, heat resistance, electrical conductivity, and cost.
  • Plan and evaluate new projects, consulting with other engineers and corporate executives as necessary.
  • Conduct or supervise tests and inspections on raw materials or finished products in order to ensure their quality.
  • Gather, review and submit periodic reports about completed failure investigations and subsequent corrective action to Sr. Management
  • Monitor and evaluate material performance and deterioration from a reliability point of view.
  • Advise Development team (locally and internationally) on material selection and equivalent US sourced materials.
  • Gather, review and evaluate technical specifications and economic factors relating to process or product design objectives
  • Understand and maintain knowledge on industry standards for metallurgy and material science purposes.
  • Oversee, review and evaluate the failure investigations done by outside service providers, if needed
  • Represent company in meetings with customers, suppliers and industry groups.
  • Promote a compliance culture in area of responsibility and live the letter and the spirit of the Rolls Royce Code of Conduct
  • Perform special projects as required.

Basic Requirements:
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Metallurgy or Materials Science and 5 years of experience in materials science, metallurgy, quality or reliability engineering; or 9 years of experience in materials science, metallurgy, quality or reliability engineering.
  • In ordered to be considered for this role, you must be a U.S. Citizen or a U.S. Permanent Resident.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of mtu products and their applications
  • Engineering knowledge of heavy duty diesel engines
  • Functional knowledge of relevant SAP systems
  • Functional knowledge of Windchill PLM and CAD viewing tools (CreoView)
  • Proficient in the use of Scanning Electron Microscope with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy
  • Excellent knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of internal combustion engines.
  • 3 years of experience working on engine failure investigations
  • Excellent ability to work independently, with little direction, and effectively with teams.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities where problems are complex
  • Excellent organizational, planning and follow-up skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Good leadership skills
  • Good presentation skills
  • Ability to travel - domestic and international.
  • Ability to work and attend training in Friedrichshafen, Germany, up to 6 weeks.
  • Must be available to work flexible hours.
  • Proficient with PC and MS Office Suite
