The position is for a graduate student level researcher or recent PhD graduate experienced in and interested in applied data science to work jointly with mathematicians and experimentalists at NIST to study forensic chemometrics and uncertainty quantification in identification and classification in mass spectrometry. A goal of this work is to develop improved classification and identification algorithms in analytical chemistry and incorporate uncertainty quantification into models to provide useful information. The position will be highly interdisciplinary requiring regular communication between mathematicians working on modelling these devices and with experimentalists taking measurements and producing data.
The work will entail:
Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Implementing optimized calculations to study AI classification algorithms.
- Assessing uncertainty in classification of experimental data.
- Computationally testing mathematical models relating uncertainty quantification.
- Significant software development (most likely python)

The Intelligent Systems Division at NIST is investigating the performance of 3D vision systems for various manufacturing and automation applications. The research will focus on conducting experiments and analyzing data to understand these systems' performance. This will support the development of performance metrics for these systems for various industrial applications.
Duties:
The duties will be tailored to fit the applicant's qualifications, and the applicant will be trained on the use of certain systems needed for the following possible duties:
? Conduct experiments to realize several existing and novel test methods for 3D vision systems.
? Research the effects of various physical properties of an object and sensor settings on the test metrics.
? Program collaborative robot arms for conducting various automation tasks.
? Use metrology systems (e.g., laser trackers, CMMs, etc.) for establishing reference measurements.
? Use analysis software (e.g., Python, MATLAB, Spatial Analyzer, Polyworks, Excel, etc.) to interpret results and produce visualizations.
? Write reports and contribute to peer-reviewed publications.
? Work with commercial bin-picking systems.

Despite significant progress in science, technology, guidance, and tools related to disaster reduction, hazard events in the United States still result in significant direct and indirect costs in terms of lives lost, disruption of commerce and financial networks, properties destroyed, and the cost of mobilizing emergency response personnel and equipment. Community resilience, the ability to withstand the impacts of hazards and recover community functions quickly, is a local and national issue. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Community Resilience Program is (1) developing science-based tools and metrics to support and measure resilience at the community-scale (2) engaging community resilience stakeholders, and (3) conducting disaster and failure studies to develop expertise and metrology that support development and validation of community resilience tools.
In addition to working with researchers in the NIST Community Resilience Group, t he PREP participant will collaborate with NIST Hurricane Maria Program researchers on a study conducted under the authority of the National Construction Safety Team (NCST) Authority. The participant will contribute to the NCST study on Emergency Communications and help liaise across that focus area and the other Hurricane Maria Program projects. The PREP researcher will study emergency communications as well as power, water, transportation, and wireless communications infrastructure impacts, recovery, and decision-making, to make recommendations for increasing resilience through changes to codes, standards, and practice.
Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
+ Carrying out mixed methods research,
+ Compiling and cleaning large datasets,
+ Analyzing qualitative and quantitative data,
+ Developing innovative methods and research directions that support field research and enhanced metrology,
+ Presenting results at internal meetings, and occasional meetings with external stakeholders,
§ Ensuring that results, protocols, datasets, and documentation have been archived or otherwise transmitted to the larger organization.
§ A Masters Degree in a Social Science discipline,
§ 5 years of relevant experience,
§ Expertise in qualitative and quantitative analyses as well as mixed methods research,
§ Knowledge of both qualitative and quantitative methodologies,
§ Familiarity with website development and management,
§ Ability to work with complex data,
§ Website development and visualization of data a plus,
§ Experience with Emergency Communications research a plus,
§ Strong oral and written communication skills.

The current public release of the AM Bench 2022 instance of the NIST Configurable Data Curation System (CDCS) may be accessed at This serves as a measurement metadata catalog, allowing users to access and search the full range of AM Bench data and metadata. The current release includes approximately 870 data records, covering feedstock materials, build processes, build geometries, part provenance, sample preparation, measurement methods, instrument metadata, sample orientations, and access to raw and analyzed sample characterization data. Supported measurements include macroscopic and miniature mechanical testing, laser absorptivity, composition, time-resolved synchrotron X-ray radiography, scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy, and much more. However, several AM Bench 2022 measurements have not yet been added, such as thermography. In addition, work on AM Bench 2025 is progress, requiring substantial additions to the existing schema and data records. For example, the first of several new build approaches (laser hot wire) is being used and the build schema needs to be expanded and generalized to make future expansion easier. Lastly, we have already implemented a CDCS versioning system, but little of this is automated, making version releases highly work intensive. Further development is needed. In summary, the AM Bench measurement metadata catalog is fully operational, but work remains on completing support for the AM Bench 2022 measurements, completing development and implementation of the versioning system, and making substantial additions to the schema and data records in support of AM Bench 2025.

The position available is for postdoctoral research on photonic integrated circuits (PICs). The postdoctoral researcher will work with NIST staff and other associates to develop optimized photonic test structures that will be incorporated in PIC process flows and enable extraction of key physical parameters associated with PIC performance, including absorption and scattering loss and refractive index dispersion. Test structures will be optimized for used in PICs based on the silicon-in-insulator, silicon nitride, and thin film lithium niobate platforms.
Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
+ Perform a literature review to assess existing test structure designs and methodologies for PIC parameter extraction
+ Develop and execute fabrication processes to realize test structure designs in material platforms such as silicon-on-insulator, silicon nitride, and thin film lithium niobate
+ Investigate methods to optimize test structure designs to improve measurement reliability and yield, including through the different fabrication steps associated with device packaging and interfacing with single fibers and fiber arrays
+ Work with team members to specify design layout rules compatible with device fabrication processes and on characterization of fabricated devices
§ Work with external fabrication facilities to implement test structure designs within their fabrication flows
