Colorado School of Mines invites applications for a position which is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program in support of microwave impedance measurements. NIST recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest, thus requires that such institutions must be the recipient of a PREP award. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas. Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.
Primary responsibilities will be leading microwave and RF measurements. Such work will be carried out in close collaboration with partners at NIST as well as industry partners, government laboratories and colleagues at other universities. The position will require publishing findings in peer reviewed journals, presenting the work at project meetings and scientific conferences, mentoring postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students, and contributing to reports for external sponsors. The candidate must be comfortable with the measurement and interpretation of electromagnetic measurements and be proficient in at least one type of programming language for scientific computing (e.g., MATLAB, python, C++).

Facility and Equipment: Johns Hopkins Medicine upholds a tripartite mission of patient care, research, and education. With a commitment to excellence, our department offers comprehensive radiation treatment services across five campuses in the Baltimore and Washington D.C. regions, including the Proton Therapy Treatment Center of Johns Hopkins at Sibley Memorial Hospital. The physics division currently includes 19 faculty physicists, 9 staff physicists, as well as dosimetrists and other staff. Our extensive infrastructure includes nine Elekta linear accelerators, a CyberKnife, two MR simulators, and multiple CT simulators throughout the system. At the proton center, we have three rotating gantries for clinical use and a fixed beam room dedicated to research. We provide a comprehensive range of clinical services at various Johns Hopkins facilities, encompassing intensity-modulated radiation therapy, image-guided radiation therapy, stereotactic body radiation therapy, LINAC-based and CyberKnife stereotactic radiosurgery, HDR and LDR brachytherapy, as well as radiopharmaceutical therapy. Treatment planning is conducted using the enterprise-wide Raystation treatment planning system. PREP Research Associate

The researcher will play a critical role in advancing the NIST mission to improve the quality of life through measurement science for enhanced resilience to natural disasters. The scope of work includes (1) advancing the implementation of the NIST framework for economic evaluation of recovery-based seismic design (NIST SP 1277 ( ) for existing buildings; (2) developing order-of-magnitude estimates to support implementation of the NIST Hazard Mitigation Technology (HMM ( ) for reducing building vulnerability to damage from Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) fires; and (3) developing repair cost estimation models the to improve building component damage consequences within NIST's Nonstructural Element Database (NED).
Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
§ Extend benefit-cost analysis of recovery-based design for new buildings to existing buildings through the development of case studies for retrofitting existing buildings for functional recovery
§ Develop cost estimates for the replacement or retrofit of building components to improve residential building performance from WUI fires
§ Develop repair cost estimate models and/or workflows that facilitate the quantification of repair costs for various non-structural building components.
§ Support NIST-led economic evaluation of benefits and costs of design archetypes or case studies
§ Writing and presenting results for academic, government, industry, and general audiences
§ Industry experience in construction cost estimation is required.

Position Description:
The Intelligent Systems Division at NIST is investigating the performance of 3D vision systems for various manufacturing and automation applications. The research will focus on conducting experiments and analyzing data to understand these systems' performance. This will support the development of performance metrics for these systems for various industrial applications.
Duties:
The duties will be tailored to fit the applicant's qualifications, and the applicant will be trained on the use of certain systems needed for the following possible duties:
? Conduct experiments to realize several existing and novel test methods for 3D vision systems.
? Research the effects of various physical properties of an object and sensor settings on the test metrics.

Emergency Response Robot Standards Development
JOB DESCRIPTION
The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is leading an international initiative to develop standardized test methods for ground-based robotic systems and small unmanned aircraft systems. This work is being carried out through the ASTM International Standards Committee on Homeland Security Applications--Response Robots (ASTM E54.09).
NIST invites collaboration on research and development efforts aimed at advancing standardized testing for robotic systems. The scope of this collaborative research includes:
+ Designing test apparatuses, performance metrics, and data collection tools to evaluate system capabilities and remote operator proficiency.
+ Validating testing protocols, modeling and simulation tools, and reference materials.
+ Analyzing experimental data to establish average and best-in-class performance benchmarks, enabling responders to assess and compare their systems using standardized metrics.
+ Analyze sensor data and draw suitable conclusions for improving the robot's efficiency
+ Conduct research to improve and innovate robotic technologies, including AI integration, sensor development, and automation processes.
+ Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate robotics solutions into existing systems and workflows.
+ Test, evaluate, and troubleshoot robotic systems to ensure optimal performance and compliance with industry standards.
+ Maintain accurate documentation of designs, processes, and results, and prepare technical reports for stakeholders

The successful candidate will hold an academic appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and a medical staff appointment in The Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.
The successful applicant will develop a program of independent scholarship in clinical, translational, or basic science. (NIST) anticipates the need for a GIS Specialist to work on community resilience and sustainability.
The position would be supported through the NIST Professional Research Experience Program
( is an exciting opportunity to work alongside NIST researchers while being associated with a NIST PREP participating academic institution.
This role requires a researcher who:
Leads complex geospatial research for Community Resilience Planning and Disaster and Failure Studies, focusing on community resilience to natural, human-caused, and technological hazards, as well as socio-economic and physical community systems. Directs the development of geospatial metrology, models, tools, guidance, and standards for community resilience and associated decision-making. Engages with internal and external partners to establish best practices for data collection in multi-disciplinary post-disaster field studies, utilizing current technologies and tools to advance disaster research metrology. Provides subject matter expertise and strategic direction on resilience-related socio-economic and physical systems science, employing advanced Geographic Information System analysis, diverse quantitative and qualitative methods, data collection instruments, and interdisciplinary methodologies for community resilience measurement and modeling. Offers geospatial expertise and guidance, and actively participates in disaster field studies, technical investigations, and disaster reconnaissance.

The PREP researcher will use of a broad set of skills, including, but not limited to: survey tool development, sample frame development, statistical inference, systems analysis/ modeling, collaborative/participatory modeling, qualitative interview analysis, quantitative structural equation modeling and regression analysis, as well as agent-based modeling. Key outcomes will be analyses, reports, and best practice guidance to businesses, industry, standard making bodies, and government.
It is expected that the PREP Researcher will engage in all steps of the research process, including but not limited to: survey (re)design and dissemination, data analysis, preparation of reports and archival journal articles, as well as reporting and communication with stakeholders.
The work will entail:
Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
+ Collaborate on data and methods to improve the methodology for measuring economic impact of community resilience planning, which is organized around the performance metric of 'cost plus loss' minimization - i.e., the economically optimal level of investment in prevention and mitigation activities to reduce future disturbance and disaster-related losses, as well as related expenditures that minimize the combined investment cost plus the value of expected losses.
+ Development of decision frameworks for community level choices
+ Design and execution of data collection instruments
+ Statistical analysis of collected survey data
+ Assessment of research and data gaps
+ Developing decision-support tools for home residents, homeowners, communities, business operators, industry, and/or government agencies to make more efficient, sustainable, resilient, and/or circular choices.
§ An advanced degree in GIS Research Sociology, Computer Science, Engineering, Economics, Social Science, Planning, Behavioral Social Sciences, or a related field.
§ Familiarity with multiple scripting languages.
