POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Bath office of LawNY seeks to fill an immediate opening for a Supervising Attorney in the area of Family Law. The attorney will represent qualified, low and middle income victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault in custody, family offense, and child support cases. The attorney will also provide victims of domestic violence and sexual assault with specialized legal advice and representation in Family Court and other civil matters that affect their safety, stability and financial security.


The Supervising Family Court Attorney will supervise staff attorneys and paralegals in their advocacy for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. We expect those who fill this position will grow and adapt their practice to the needs of the community and the organization, and place an emphasis on supervision skills and the ability to practice in multiple forums. The candidate must have the caring, patience, and emotional maturity to help low-income people overcome crisis situations.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Admitted to practice and in good standing in New York State
  • Three (3) years experience providing legal services as a licensed attorney.

RESPONSIBILITIES
These are the most significant responsibilities and primary functions of the position.

  • Provide direct legal services to low income victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in Family Court matters including advice, negotiation, litigation and administrative advocacy.
  • Maintain specialized knowledge of NYS Family Law, particularly: family offense, custody and visitation, child support violations, abuse and neglect proceedings.
  • Develop skills advocating for low-income clients in other civil legal areas affecting victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, including, for example, housing law, public and disability benefits, and divorce.
  • Interact respectfully with clients and staff from a wide range of backgrounds, with an awareness of the importance of cultural competence and humility.
  • Supervise caseload of supervised personnel, ensuring that each supervisee handles an appropriate amount of work, and coordinate the periodic review of the cases.
  • Help identify leadership development and mentoring opportunities for supervisees.
  • Create and maintain a safe and healthy work environment for supervisees.
  • Collaborate with other human services providers, non-profit organizations and community groups as well as the courts, administrative tribunals and the private bar to address legal problems within our community, particularly those affecting victims of DV/SA.
  • Cooperate in all grant reporting requirements, program reporting, timekeeping, file maintenance, case closing and compliance review.
  • Maintain a high level of professional competence through attending of training sessions, seminars and conferences and individual efforts to keep abreast of current developments in family law, trauma-informed legal services, poverty law and in the application of an equity lens to client service.

COMPENSATION PACKAGE

The beginning salary for a Supervising Attorney at LawNY with 3 years of experience is 80,000 and the salary for a Supervising Attorney with 30 years of experience is 111,600. Salary will be based on experience. LawNY is a qualifying employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program(PSLF).

Essential Duties
Attends all sessions of the court.
Takes full shorthand notes of oral testimony requested to be on the record offered before the court, including objections made to the admissibility of evidence, court rulings and remarks on the objections, and exceptions to the rulings.
Read portions of shorthand notes to resolve disputes of testimony, argument, or matters of law upon request of the trial court.
Files all exhibits or necessary documents with the clerk of the court.
Preserves all shorthand notes for future reference, as per statutory guidelines.
Furnishes a verbatim transcript, as per statutory guidelines, of the reported evidence, including necessary exhibits or documents, or other proceedings, in whole or in part, utilizing his/her expertise of one of the following means:
Certifies the accuracy of the verbatim transcript produced, as per statutory guidelines.
Meets deadlines as set forth by law;
Follows all guidelines and court room procedures;
Ensures the integrity of the record is never compromised;
Maintains and keeps court reporting equipment and software up to date;
References necessary resource material, as needed;
Compiles statistical information, reports and data;

RETIREMENT
Retirement benefits are provided by the Texas County and District Retirement Fund (TCDRS). Regular employees become a member of TCDRS upon hire. All regular employees are required to contribute 7% to the retirement fund and the County matches 250% upon eligible retirements.

DEFERRED COMPENSATION
Employees may defer earnings, on a pre-tax basis, into a 457 deferred compensation program. This is an optional program.

LIFE INSURANCE
Full-time County employees are provided a basic life insurance benefit of 10,000 life insurance at no cost. Supplemental coverage is available for additional fees.

LONG-TERM DISABILITY
The Long-Term disability program provides 60% of the employees' income when the employee becomes disabled because of an illness, injury or accident for a period above 90 days.

We are recruiting to fill an Apprentice Court Clerk position to perform entry level duties in a court, which utilizes an electronic filing system. Work initially is under close supervision while the incumbent learns general office knowledge and specific court policies and procedures. Work involves responsibility for court case processing which may require the application of independent judgment and the application of statutes, policies, and regulations. Work requires frequent interaction with the public providing exceptional customer service. Work may also involve financial record keeping within an automated case management system, providing direct support for a circuit judge or associate circuit judge providing a full range of responsibilities within the division's jurisdiction.

General Duties:

Perform technical clerical work in the Family Court - Orders of Protection Department which will include the following: explain to litigants the procedures for filing and issuing all forms and pleadings necessary for Adult Orders of Protection/Child Protection petitions; prepare ex-parte orders; make docket entries of all pleadings filed, including sheriff returns; ensure accuracy of documents filed by attorneys through the court's electronic filing system before acceptance; scan and attach documents by using DMS in the case management system; notify parties as required; prepare dockets; enter dispositions of the cases in the court's automated case management system (SMC); transport orders to multiple divisions both electronically and in paper form during court hearings; answer inquiries and furnish information to attorneys, court personnel and
the general public in person and by telephone; and perform other duties as assigned. EXTENSIVE PUBLIC AND TELEPHONE CONTACT IS REQUIRED. THIS POSITION WILL WORK MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY, WITH VARYING START AND END TIMES BETWEEN 8:00 A.M. AND 6:00 P.M. WITH ROTATING SATURDAYS 8:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M.

  • Performs case processing in receiving and initiating case files; performs technical duties such as reviewing judgments, preparing warrants, summonses and garnishments and executions, bond settings and docket control

  • Performs accounting duties in receiving and disbursing monies, reconciles financial accounts, and prepares daily and monthly financial reports
  • Prepares a variety of documents related to court operations including court orders, court calendars, notices of hearings, court appearances, or reports; coordinates the flow of documents necessary for court assignments; and properly queues electronically filed proceedings for processing

Court Administrative Officer III - Family Division

This is administrative or specialized work at the full performance level in the court service. An employee in this class may serve in a staff capacity as an assistant to an administrator; as a journeyman in a service function such as personnel, administrative analysis or fiscal control; as a line supervisor responsible for a complex clerical or technical function; or is responsible for a nonjudicial court trial procedure. Work differs from that of the next lower level by the difficulty of assignment, responsibility for independently completing assignments or greater degree of accountability involved in the operations of the unit supervised.

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Assists an administrator by completing and following through on administrative problems.
  • Serves in a coordinating capacity with some authority for making commitments.
  • Investigates administrative problems and recommends solutions.
  • Independently completes major studies in an assigned service function.
  • Depending on area of assignment, performs tasks such as making classification and pay studies, preparing and administering examinations and interviewing prospective employees.
  • Obtains and analyzes facts concerning court operating procedures; develops recommendations for improvement and assists in the installation of new and revised methods and procedures.
  • Reviews budget proposals, directing the preparation and assembly of the operating budget, and reviews requests for expenditures.
  • Supervises a complex clerical or technical function such as the arbitration program and civil listings.

Competencies, knowledge, skills and abilities include considerable knowledge of English usage and grammar, knowledge of office management standards, procedures and practices, knowledge of supervisory methods and practices, some knowledge of the principles and standards of administrative organizations and management, some knowledge of the principles of procedures analysis, work simplification, and forms and records control, ability to represent the assigned unit in conferences and meetings with the public and private officials, ability to supervise a staff engaged in varied clerical functions, ability to understand, carry out and communicate effectively to subordinates and/or associates new or changed procedures and operations, and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

We're looking for pickleball court monitors who can help us keep our Thurman Family Pickleball Center programs running smoothly, putting the development of players at the forefront of all we do.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
  • To help ensure a quality program by monitoring and maintaining facilities and equipment used by the YMCA to carry out the program at the highest level possible.
  • Must act as an extension of the Program Director in charge of sports by addressing any questions and concerns brought by all.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Must complete all required Annual Compliance Trainings within 30 days of hire and renewed annually.
  • Arrive 15 minutes prior to start of scheduled events and stay late as needed.
  • Communicate problems and concerns shared by the participants to director in charge.
  • Must be able to relate to all program participants in a courteous, respectful, and professional manner.
  • Have confidence needed to enforce the Y rules at all facilities utilized to carry out the program.
  • Ability to address and respond to any actions that are not in line with the Y mission or philosophy.
  • Must provide the safest possible environment by helping to organize and maintain the program area including any and all Y equipment used by members.
  • Report any and all incidents to supervisor.
  • Responsible for carrying out approved emergency action plans in the event of an emergency.
  • Clean program area before and after activities.
  • Set up and canvas playing surfaces prior to program and return equipment after program to provide a safe environment.
  • Communicate effectively with members.
  • Develop meaningful and sustainable relationships with members.
