Are you an experienced livestock caretaker with strong leadership skills and a deep understanding of animal husbandry? Lake View Cattle Co. is hiring a Herdsman to take on a key leadership role in overseeing daily animal operations and supporting the Farm Manager in all aspects of livestock and farm management.

Founded in 2007, Lake View Cattle Co. is home to 66 Black Angus cattle, 40 pigs, and 90 turkeys , along with crop operations for corn, soybeans, and hay. Our mission is to support Cayuga Nation Citizens through quarterly meat distribution and sustainable farming practices rooted in quality, care, and community.
What You’ll Do
As the Herdsman, you will lead the care and health of our livestock and act as Assistant Manager to the Farm Manager. You’ll ensure high standards in animal husbandry, supervise day-to-day livestock operations, and help coordinate farm staff.
Core Responsibilities:Oversee daily animal care : feeding, watering, cleaning, health monitoring
Manage livestock health protocols : vaccinations, parasite control, breeding records
Supervise calving, farrowing, and poultry health, ensuring quick response to animal needs
Lead recordkeeping of births, medical treatments, feed usage, and behavioral observations
Monitor animal well-being and identify early signs of illness, injury, or distress
Assist with training and supervising farm hands and delegating daily tasks
Operate and maintain farm equipment (tractors, loaders, ATVs, spreaders, etc.)
Coordinate with veterinarians and external suppliers
Ensure animal habitats and facilities are clean, safe, and compliant with welfare standards
Step in as farm lead in the absence of the Farm Manager
Support crop-related tasks and seasonal work when needed
Participate in weekend and emergency care rotations (e.g., calving season)
What We’re Looking For
We’re seeking a motivated professional who:
Is at least 18 years old
Has 2+ years of hands-on livestock experience (cattle, pigs, poultry)
Has strong knowledge of animal husbandry , health, and nutrition
Is confident leading a team and managing day-to-day operations
Is capable of recordkeeping , identifying health issues, and administering basic treatment
Can operate and troubleshoot farm equipment and tools
Has excellent time management, flexibility, and problem-solving skills
Is physically capable of lifting 50 lbs., standing for long hours, and working outdoors
Has reliable transportation and can pass a drug screening
Holds a high school diploma or GED (agricultural education or certifications a plus)
Schedule & Hours
? Weekly Hours: 45–60+ (Varies Seasonally)
⏰ Winter Hours: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
️ Summer Hours: 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM / up to 9:00 PM based on farm needs
? Days: Monday–Friday, with rotating weekend and evening coverage
? Extra time required during calving/farrowing seasons and emergencies
? On-site role requiring daily farm presence and flexibility

Role Overview:
The Assistant Farm Manager is a key leader on the Operations team who is responsible for supporting the Farm Manager on the day to day operations of the farms they manage including, but not limited to, executing the irrigation schedule, equipment operations, and repairs and maintenance. Responsibilities:
As a high-growth company, roles will evolve, but initially the key responsibilities of this role will be:
Day to Day Farm Management of Farm Portfolio (65% of time):
- Oversee the daily operations of all GLF properties in their assigned portfolio.
- Oversees the safe operation of the farms at all times, including verifying the proper chemical and equipment training has been completed and documented prior to task completion.
- Verifies compliance with all local, state and federal safety and operations requirements
- Walks farms regularly and intimately knows the current state and quality of all crops. Problem solves day to day issues and supports the Farm Manager in establishing the strategy for when budget deviation is necessary
- Supports Farm Manager in budget tracking, planning, and forecasting including labor procurement when necessary
- Executes irrigation schedules and agronomy playbook tasks
- Manages effective equipment operation including ensuring repairs, preventative maintenance and general upkeep of all equipment and structures are satisfied in a timely manner to avoid equipment downtime.
- Stays attuned to risks (weather, pests, etc.) that could negatively impact the health of our crops and acts proactively to mitigate potential impact and quickly communicates issues impacting yield to leadership in a timely manner
Lead/Manage/Hold Accountable (LMA) Farm Teams (20% of time):
- Builds strong working relationships with all Foremen, and Field Operators and supports Farm Manager in holding the team accountable for the proper and timely execution of assigned tasks
- Participates in leading a monthly meeting with each farm team to share company and farm updates and receive feedback from the team. The Assistant Farm Manager is responsible for partnering with the Farm Manager to consider and act upon the feedback provided in a timely manner.
- Coaches, clears roadblocks, and otherwise assists the team in timely and accurate performance.
- Helps to create a coaching culture by candidly providing both positive and developmental feedback to all employees on the farms. Contributes feedback to team performance evaluations quarterly
- Uphold and improve upon GLFs culture and values at all farms
- As necessary, resolves personnel problems by investigating issues, identifying solutions, and recommending action while treating employees with respect through the process
Support Farm-Level Agronomic Strategy (15% of Time):
- Partner with the Farm Manager to execute the agronomic strategy for each farm in a manner that optimizes the output of our field assets and course correcting when necessary
- Support experimentation planning and execution, as assigned, to solve for both profitability and strong yield output
- Supports the trial of new AgTechnology and future adoption
- Aids in the planning for long-term sustainability of each farm and optimizes where possible

**Purpose & Scope:** This position is responsible for assisting the Farm Manager in the total operation of breeding a sow farm consisting of 3150 to 9000 sows
**Principle Responsibilities:**
+ Support the Farm Manager with supervision and training of hourly employees
+ Effectively communicate expectations and job responsibilities to farm staff
+ Be willing and able to perform all jobs associated with sow production
+ Develop daily and weekly work schedules
+ Coordinating the activity of department lead personnel
+ Monitor the appearance of buildings and grounds are neat, clean and orderly at all times.
+ Oversee implementation and maintenance of breeding programs in accordance with the company's breeding processes and procedures.
+ Oversee performance of regular breeder checks to determine status of new litters and breeder productivity, ensuring that the breeding colonies are producing appropriately to include animal numbers and adequate litters.
+ Manage animal nutrition, including feeding and watering animals, and cleaning and disinfecting pens, enclosures, and yards.
+ Direct examination animals to detect symptoms of illness or injury. Treat minor injuries and ailments and contact veterinarians to obtain treatment for animals with serious illnesses or injuries.
+ Supervise injection of vaccines.
+ Direct the selection of animals to be bred and semen specimens to be used, according to knowledge of animals, genealogies, traits, and desired offspring characteristics.
+ Ensure accurate recording of animal characteristics such as weights, growth patterns, and diets.
+ Direct packaging and labeling of semen to be used for artificial insemination, ensuring recording of information is accurate.
+ Oversee preparation of containers of semen and storage or shipment.
+ Inspect maintenance of logs of semen specimens used and animals bred.
+ Oversee measurement of specified amounts of semen into calibrated syringes.
+ Supervise injection of prepared animal semen into female animals for breeding purposes.
+ Direct adjustment of controls to maintain specific building temperatures required for animals' health and safety.
+ Examine semen microscopically to assess and record density and motility of gametes, and dilute semen with prescribed diluents, according to formulas.
+ Oversee, tattooing or tagging of animals to allow animal identification.
**Required Qualifications:**
- 4 year college degree or equivalent experience

**Purpose of Position** :
Assist Farm Manager in maximizing Grow Out Farm productivity and profit by planning, organizing, directing, and controlling activities in assigned Brood or Grow Facility that meet and/or exceed customer specifications.
Assisting Farm Manager to document plans and programs; help accomplish positive employee morale and retention of employees; involvement in and implement training; help maintain volume, costs, and quality of product and supplies; help promote safety and document safety issues; comply with all company policies and procedures
**Principle Accountabilities**
+ Effectively support the implementation of principles and philosophies expressed in company documents (i.e. Team Charter, Commitment, Managing Principles, and Total Customer Satisfaction, etc.) within your assigned farm departments.
+ Assist with the training of all employees working at your assigned brood/grow farm in direct communication with your Area Production Supervisor and within guidelines set forth by company policies.
+ Assist in the responsibilities for the management of flocks within your assigned brood/grow farm in direct communication with your Farm Manager and within the guidelines set forth by the Department Production guide to achieve optimum poult and turkey performance.
+ Assist with the planning and directing of farm work within your assigned brood/grow farm on a regularly scheduled basis within perimeters set forth by corporate and division policies. This includes but is not limited to maintaining accurate livability records, individual flock records, monthly checklists, bird handling, timecards and attendance calendars.
+ Manage and monitor the environmental conditions of the farm's flocks, seeing that all details necessary for maximizing performance are carried out on a consistent basis.
+ Review with Farm Manager any issues that are occurring and work together to come up with solutions to maintain healthy and comfortable flocks.
+ Know, understand and enforce all sanitation and biosecurity procedures as set forth by Jennie-O Company Live Production policy, along with Company policies, rules and procedures.
+ Responsible to see that your assigned brood/grow farm and working area is kept maintained in a neat and orderly condition.
+ Assist Farm Manager to ensure that feed is scheduled and ordered in a timely manner following guidelines and procedures set in place by feed mill.
+ Assist Farm Manager to ensure company safety audits are completed with results meeting or exceeding Company standards.
+ Assist Farm Manager to ensure the implementation of preventative maintenance and repairs for facility, equipment and vehicles within your assigned brood/grow farm.
+ Utilize Brood/Grow Manual and share new ideas and procedures for updating with Farm Manager and Area Production Supervisor that enhance quality and livability.
+ Review Emergency situations with Farm Manager and employees annually and review emergency procedures for fire, standby power, emergency weather, etc.
+ Ensure farms and supporting personnel are performing their jobs in such a way that they are continually providing their customers with products/services that meet or exceed expectations.
+ Ensure compliance with all appropriate Company policies, procedures, and programs.
+ Ensure that all farm/flock inputs and outputs are fully accounted for in an accurate and timely manner.
+ Have a thorough understanding of all technical fundamentals necessary to support turkey brooding and growing operations.
+ Maintain our standard environmental requirements that have been determined necessary to maximize all advantages to show the turkeys full potential in your facility. Responsible for the efficient usage of shavings, electricity, L.P. Gas, medications, feed, etc.
+ Assist the Farm Manager with developing profit plans and capital expenditure plans on an annual basis, while being knowledgeable of resources needed for performance and setting objectives for improvement.
+ Ensure that all jobs necessary for proper performance of flocks are conducted - this includes, but limited to, poult placement, bird transfers, environmental sampling, and other farm activities.
+ Perform vaccination activities including manufacturing and administration of vaccines per Staff Veterinarian.
+ Be involved in department activities and problem solving through regular attendance of employee meetings.
+ Ensure that turkey handling and care is done in accordance with established animal welfare guidelines.
+ Fully knowledgeable of all Grow Out operating procedures and specifications.
+ Fully knowledgeable of all Basic Production sanitation procedures and policies.
+ Fully knowledgeable of all Basic Production personnel policies and benefit programs.
+ Individual is available as needed on a 24 hour, 7 day per week schedule. Work assigned weekends and assigned holidays.
**Minimum Qualification:**
+ Good work history - stability with previous employment or internal position (1 year minimum).
+ Performance results - must have met expectations with previous employer, and/or Jennie-O Turkey Store (internal candidate) in the following:

+ Performance: Quantity and Quality
+ Behavior and Cooperation
+ Individual must have a valid driver license with good vehicle operating records.
+ Must be in good physical condition (able to wear eye and respiratory, and any/all safety protection for extended periods of time).
+ Individual must occasionally to frequently be able to twist, stoop, bend, squat, lift, and carry at least 50 pounds.
+ Willing to work 7 days/week up to 2 weeks at a time.
+ Good math ability to perform farm inventory and other record keeping tasks.
+ Good mechanical aptitude and ability to use hand tools to perform minor repairs and maintenance activities.
+ Must possess the ability to work effectively and efficiently without supervision.
**Preferred qualifications:**
+ Four years of experience in the field of poultry with responsibilities and standard performance results (preferably turkeys).
+ High school diploma or equivalent.
