Job Description

We are seeking a Corporate Lawyer with 3 to 5 years of experience to join the legal team, providing support on regulatory, corporate, and compliance matters in a dynamic international financial environment. This role is ideal for proactive legal professionals with a strong background in financial regulation and a genuine interest in technology and evolving business models.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice on financial regulation applicable locally and internationally (DFSA, VARA, FCA, FSA, etc.).

  • Support licensing processes and maintain relations with local and international regulatory authorities.

  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial contracts, including NDAs, SLAs, and cooperation agreements.

  • Assist in the development and review of internal policies (AML, KYC, governance, data protection, etc.).

  • Provide corporate support: entity formation, shareholder changes, board resolutions, corporate secretarial work.

  • Work closely with cross-functional teams (compliance, finance, operations, business).

  • Monitor regulatory developments and assess their legal impact on the business.

Requirements

  • Law degree (LLB or equivalent).

  • 3 to 5 years of experience at a law firm or in the legal department of a financial institution.

  • Strong legal knowledge and proven ability to draft legal documents and communicate technical matters with precision.

  • Genuine interest in financial regulation, corporate law, fintech, and emerging technologies (blockchain, crypto).

  • Analytical mindset, proactivity, attention to detail, and ability to work independently.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in the financial sector (banking, fintech, brokers, asset managers) or direct dealings with regulators.

  • Knowledge of virtual asset regulatory frameworks (e.g. VARA, MiCAR, FATF).

  • Postgraduate studies in financial regulation, banking law, compliance, or legal tech are an asset.

  • Admission to practice law (bar registration) in a recognized jurisdiction.

The Head, Trade and Economic Security Public Policy, AWS will join a dynamic team and be able to immediately and directly enhance AWS policy advocacy related to trade and global economic security policy developments, such as export controls. Like our business interests, our policy issues are broad, forward-thinking, and driven by what is best for our customers. The Head, Trade and Economic Security Public Policy, AWS will be based in Washington, DC, and will be an integral part of the AWS Public Policy Americas team.

The individual will work in full partnership with AWS Legal, Global Trade and Product Compliance, PR teams, and business units, as well as with in-country global public policy colleagues (e.g., Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, Middle East) in support of AWSs continued expansion to support our customers.

The Head, Trade and Economic Security Public Policy, AWS, will work to formulate and implement a strategic approach to AWS global trade and economic security policy priorities, and build our engagement strategy with governments and international organizations on issues relating to export controls and other trade-related policies aimed at promoting economic security, with particular focus on emerging technologies. The Senior Manager will work closely with industry associations and broader stakeholder groups to develop and execute policy advocacy.

The individual will be responsible for monitoring and reporting on domestic and international trade and economic security policy developments, and will work with colleagues to address issues and determine constructive external engagement, including by building coalitions.

Key job responsibilities

  • Coordinate and build effective relationships with internal stakeholders, including but not limited to Legal, Global Trade and Product Compliance, Supply Chain and Procurement, regional AWS Public Policy colleagues, and Amazon Consumer Public Policy to ensure alignment between AWSs core business priorities and public policy goals related to trade and economic security.
  • Manage and execute advocacy and stakeholder engagement strategies that advance public policy issues, focusing on the areas of trade and export controls policy.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders and business teams to identify, inform and strategize opportunities and where necessary, develop mitigations around trade policy risks.
  • Support overall public policy and advocacy strategies to maintain and strengthen relationships with trade and economic agencies.
  • Anticipate challenges our business and expansion teams could face as AWS expands globally to better serve customers in an evolving public policy landscape.
  • Monitor geopolitical developments and the technology regulatory environment, determine the impact of potential/impending changes, clearly communicate impact to internal/external stakeholders, and support internal operational teams to identify potential mitigations.
  • Effect change and drive policymaking that will ultimately benefit our customers. Help manage and coordinate external advocacy efforts, outreach programs, and key initiatives in concert with business objectives.
  • Engage U.S. and foreign government officials, including at the U.S. Departments of Commerce and State, the U.S. Trade Representative, other relevant Executive Branch agencies, and their foreign government equivalents, as well as Congressional stakeholders.
  • Contribute to Amazons participation in Washington-based industry associations and manage relationships with outside consultants focused on trade and economic security policy.
Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • Advanced degree is required, such as a Masters degree, in a relevant discipline, such as public policy, political science, law, or business. A Bachelors degree is also required.
  • Fifteen years or more of experience in government or private sector, preferably in the ICT industry.
  • Fluent in English, and preferably language skills in Spanish or another language.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expert knowledge of domestic, global, bilateral and regional trade and economic agreements and institutions, such as, the World Trade Organization, as well as expertise and experience specifically in export controls policy.
  • Highly effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including demonstrated ability to effectively and comfortably interact at all corporate and political levels; create factual, relevant and easily understandable talking points and other messaging; and persuasively deliver messaging to relevant audiences.
  • Maintain highest personal levels of ethical conduct, confidentiality, and integrity.
  • Self-starter who can take general direction and produce specific, impactful results.
  • Ability to identify and understand key technical aspects pertaining to corporate operations in legislative and regulatory proposals, understand business implications, and synthesize policy documents for internal and external customers.
  • Think critically, process data from multiple sources, forecast potential scenarios, prioritize based on probability and desired outcome, and recommend a best course of action.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence, negotiate with, and persuade others.
  • Strong judgment/decision-making skills, and political acumen.

About the Opportunity

The Richmond Fed Supervision, Regulation, and Credit (SRC) department is now hiring for our 2023 Summer Internship Program. SRC is responsible for the supervision of bank holding companies and state member banks.  Supervision is completed from two differing aspects, Safety and Soundness (assessing a bank’s financial performance and risk management practices) and Consumer Compliance (assessing a bank’s compliance with consumer guidelines such as Fair Lending and Community Reinvestment Act). 

The Assistant Examiner Internship Program provides a unique experience in SRC to explore its business lines and is located in Richmond, VA. The program provides summer interns with the opportunity to enhance essential business skills and increase understanding of the Federal Reserve’s regulatory role to support and evaluate the safety and soundness of financial institutions. During the program, interns will gain exposure to the supervisory process at financial institutions. This will include reviewing various reports, participating in meetings, interacting with management at supervised institutions, and making assessments on risk exposure.  Topics of review may include adequacy of risk management processes, operational controls, financial condition, and/or compliance with banking laws and regulations. In addition, the intern will develop a relationship with a mentor, create and deliver presentations, and complete a final project.

The Summer Internship Program provides outstanding students with the opportunity to gain valuable work experience at a unique institution. Through advanced project work, assignments and professional development activities, interns are provided with an extensive understanding of the work of the Federal Reserve. Interns will be given the opportunity to enhance their business skills through critical financial analysis, formal presentations, research and writing. In addition to specific business area tasks, you will receive targeted leadership training, mentorship and valuable networking opportunities.

With an initial application, candidates are required to submit a cover letter, resume and current college transcript(s); an additional writing sample is optional.  Documents, including transcripts (unofficial copies are okay at this time), should be uploaded as attachments to your electronic submission. Formatted attachments can include Microsoft Office products, PDFs, JPGs or HTML documents; size for each is limited to 1.5Mb.

What You Will Do:

  • Participate in up to two examinations at the Federal Reserve Bank and/or a state member bank.

  • Communicate findings of supervisory activities as advised by examination staff.

  • Responsibly handle highly sensitive and confidential information.

  • Observe and participate in relevant meetings to gain an extensive overview of the department and critical examination issues.

  • Gain a thorough understanding of the department and examination process by interviewing staff and reviewing process maps and timelines.

  • Work with presentation advisor and other interns to create and practice delivering a presentation related to internship experience.

  • Deliver presentation to the department, where attendees include senior leaders.

  • Develop a proactive relationship with mentor who provides feedback regarding progress.

Qualifications:

  • College student with a minimum 3.0 GPA with a preferred emphasis in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Economics, Management, Mathematics, Statistics, information technology, information security, cybersecurity or related field.

  • Demonstrated ability to influence and lead others

  • Strong project management skills, including organization, planning and execution, analytical and problem solving skills

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively in a team environment

  • Comfortable with technology, its changing nature and ability to innovate upon it 

Other Requirements and Considerations:

  • An applicant posting for employment as a Federal Reserve examiner/analyst must be a U.S. citizen or hold a permanent residence visa/Green Card and be an intending citizen.  Sponsorship or practical training extensions are not available for this position.

  • Under conflict of interest guidelines administered by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, examining personnel may not participate on an examination of a financial institution or affiliate if the examiner was employed by the financial institution or affiliate within the past 12 months.

  • Please review the FRB Employee Code of Conduct to ensure there are no major issues related to your previous employment and current financial interests (The Code is available on the About Us, Careers webpage at  the relevant sections are  5.3 and Appendix B, Parts I, II and III).

  • FRB ethics rules generally prohibit employees and their immediate families from owning investments in banks, savings associations or their holding companies (Section 5.3). Additionally, employees engaged in Supervision and Regulation may be subject to borrowing and deposit restrictions. These employees may need to recuse themselves from certain supervisory work based on:

    • their borrowing relationships (Appendix B Parts I.1, II.1 and II.2),

    • if a financial institution employs a member of the employee’s immediate family (i.e. spouse, child, parent, or sibling) (Appendix B Part I.3 and Part II.3),

    • if the individual was employed by the financial institution or affiliate within the past 12 months (Appendix B Part I.3 and II.3).

  • In certain cases, the recusal may be so extensive it could materially reduce the effectiveness of the prospective employee.

  • Selected candidate is subject to special background check procedures.

  • The hourly rate for summer interns is $20.50/hour. 

  • US Citizenship or US Permanent Resident status is required.
