Position Summary:

Packaging Design Engineer I is primarily responsible for developing custom packaging designs and specifications in compliance with customer- or industry standards while meeting performance requirements, sustainability goals, and maintaining cost-effectiveness. * Planning and leading test methods, design verification and validation activities


* Host design reviews with internal and external stakeholders

**Qualifications:**

WHAT YOU WILL EXPERIENCE IN THIS POSITION:

  • Join a passionate team that is focused on design and development of packaging for Data Center Liquid cooling products, industrial air-conditioners, and electrical enclosures

  • Develop designs and documentation for new and existing product packaging by creating 3D models, drawings, bills of materials (BOM), and other documentation to fully define for purchasing and manufacturing

  • Work directly with the Packaging Engineers and collaborate with multi-functional teams (Design Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply, and Customer Support)

  • Assist in the testing of packaging solutions in the on-site testing lab

  • Initiate/prepare Engineering Change Order (ECO) documentation, including drawings and BOM’s

YOU HAVE:

  • Two-year technical degree preferred

  • 1+ years of experience in CAD design and documentation of components and assemblies preferred

  • 3D CAD modeling experience using SolidWorks required. Artios CAD Experience is a plus.

  • Knowledge of drafting standards

  • Experience with ENOVIA PLM system/BOM a plus

Pay Transparency

nVent’s pay scale is based on the expected range of base pay for this job and the employee’s work location. Employee pay within this range will be based on a combination of factors including knowledge, skills, abilities, experience, education, and performance. Where federal, state, or local minimum wage requirements exist, employee pay will comply.

Compensation Range:

$54,300.00 - $100,800.00

Depending on the position offered, employee may be eligible for other forms of compensation, such as annual incentives.

  • A primary contributor to overall brand development, ensuring all product and packaging solutions consistently reflect and elevate the brand's identity, positioning, and consumer appeal.
  • Develop and oversee type design systems rooted in the fundamentals of classic typography—with an emphasis on Swiss Design (International Typographic Style)—to ensure brand consistency and typographic excellence across all media.
  • Spearhead the creation of compelling and memorable logos that encapsulate brand identity and values.
  • Direct the design and development of packaging that stands out on the shelf, aligns with brand positioning, and meets functional requirements.
  • Oversee critical Point of Sale (POS) design initiatives to drive consumer engagement and conversion, leveraging structural engineering expertise to enhance functionality and visual impact.

Qualifications

  • 15 years of experience in brand and product design leadership roles.
  • Industrial design engineering background strongly preferred.
  • Proven track record of successfully creating and evolving brands across multiple categories.
  • Deep understanding of type design principles and their application in brand systems.
  • Skilled in logo design, with a portfolio demonstrating impactful work.
  • Strong background in developing POS materials that drive in-store success.
  • Extensive experience in packaging design for consumer products, with a focus on both aesthetics and functionality.

The role of the Packaging Design team is to create packaging that surprises and delights Amazon's customers

The primary role of the Packaging Design Manager is to lead the packaging design function to develop and support the scale of fiber-based packaging platforms (designs) that meet or exceed our customers' expectations for the products that they buy yet works flawlessly through the supply chain delivering the lowest total cost and highest level of sustainability. To deliver packaging that delights our customers, the Packaging Design Manager will ensure the team has deep knowledge of paperboard material properties, converting processes, fulfillment processes, supply chain demands, customer experience and ensure each design passes a rigorous set of quantitative performance test. Through understanding customer concession data and broader customer and supply chain feedback mechanisms, the Packaging Design Manager will ensure our packaging platforms are continuously optimized and fit for use.

The candidate will ensure the core capabilities of the organization are in place and effectively utilized to accelerate Amazon's drive to be best in class of fiber-based packaging. The individual's team will work directly with the program managers, automation / machinery development engineers, packaging labs, our customer experience teams and other experts in the field of fiber-based packaging. Co-located with our designers and scientist for materials, machinery and automation design this role will work to ensure that Amazon's packaging is best in class through co-creation and optimization. As part of the Mechatronics and Sustainable packaging team, this role is vital to ensuring future investments in automation are created with optimized packaging as a central and core tenet.

Key job responsibilities

- Provide leadership of the Packaging Design Team consisting of package designers, industrial designers, converting subject matter expert, lab technicians and data analyst

- Ensure the team develops, refines and provides evergreen stewardship of the company's packaging platforms that are deployed across the global network

- Oversee the development of detailed specifications of our packaging platforms to be used by Amazon's sourcing teams and our supplier

- Participate in stage gate reviews and topical development meetings as part of MSP global engineering leadership team

- Review and support the creation of white papers on packaging designs, performance, use cases and optionality that will be used in monthly business reviews or project report- out's

- Participate / lead topical meetings to ensure the developments set the benchmark for customer experience, supply chain performance and sustainability.

- Travel to participate in customer experience reviews, supply chain audits, direct and third-party labs and to vendors.

About the team

Aligning mechatronics and packaging into one organization, (Mechatronics and Sustainable Packaging, MSP) enables Amazon to develop, deploy and scale automated solutions across the Amazon Fulfillment Network, especially from Pick to SLAM for the Automated Robotics Sortable (ARS) network. This group works backwards from deep customer insights to deliver solutions that seamlessly integrate into brownfield and greenfield deployments with safety as a top priority. In addition, Sustainable Packaging solutions are a thread that impacts and connects all parts of the Amazon Stores supply chain and customer experience. They take ownership for the entire packaging experience including selling partner design, first/middle/last mile and total customer experience. They eliminate waste and packaging wherever possible. Where Amazon added packaging is required, they are transitioning from single-use plastics to curbside recyclable paper-based materials.

Basic Qualifications

- BA in Packaging Science, Packaging Engineering or similar 4 year packaging or industrial design degree

- 10+ years of paperboard / corrugated design experience is required; paper science background is a plus

- 4+ years of management experience of a packaging design team

- Proficient in Artios CAD, Adobe, Solidworks and/or other similar design package

Preferred Qualifications

- Track record of creative package design demonstrating the linkages to: machinery & automation, supply chain performance, converting techniques, paperboard material properties and customer experience

- Deep understanding of packaging performance testing methodologies and results (ISTA/ASTM); hands on experience in working with packaging laboratories

- Deep understanding of fiber based converting's processes (boxes, bags, pouches)

- Demonstrated understanding of paperboard materials (Kraft, CRB, FBB, Linear, Mediums) and the performance implication of substrate choices

- Working knowledge of the patent processes

- Finite element or other similar package performance simulation tools

- Working knowledge of recycling processes, technical barriers to recycling and options to overcome those barriers

- Working knowledge of sustainability scorecards, LCA's and how to rate packaging designs

- Working understanding of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and implications on packaging design

- Experience managing global teams

- Active industry association participation: Institute of certified packaging professionals (IoPP), Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC)

- Execution of a major new a packaging design launch where the candidate owned the packaging design process supported by complementary team role in machinery & automation and material science would be expected
