Our client is a leading pharmaceutical company seeking a highly experienced Principal Chemical Process Engineer to drive innovation and optimization in their manufacturing operations in Des Moines, Iowa, US . This senior role will be responsible for designing, developing, and scaling up chemical processes for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and drug products. You will leverage your deep expertise in chemical engineering principles, process safety, regulatory compliance (e.g., cGMP), and advanced manufacturing technologies. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of successfully managing complex process development projects from laboratory scale through to commercial production. Key responsibilities include troubleshooting existing manufacturing processes, identifying opportunities for efficiency improvements, reducing waste, and enhancing product quality. You will lead cross-functional teams, collaborate with R&D, manufacturing, quality assurance, and regulatory affairs, and provide technical leadership and mentorship. Key Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, and optimize chemical processes for API and drug product manufacturing.

  • Ensure processes are robust, efficient, safe, and compliant with cGMP regulations.
  • Conduct process hazard analyses (PHAs) and implement appropriate safety measures.

  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance yield, reduce costs, and improve quality.
  • Collaborate with R&D, Quality Assurance, and Regulatory Affairs teams.

  • Stay abreast of new technologies and advancements in pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering or a related field.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in chemical process development and manufacturing, preferably within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.
  • Extensive knowledge of reaction engineering, separation processes, and crystallization.
  • Proven experience with process scale-up, validation, and cGMP compliance.
  • Strong understanding of process safety management and hazard analysis techniques.
  • Experience with Process Analytical Technology (PAT) and advanced control strategies.
