Job Summary:
The Lab Manager is responsible for the management and administrative functions of the laboratory. Responsible for budgeting and forecasting, policy development and implementation, regulatory compliance and quality assurance. Supervision is exercised over laboratory supervisors, clinical staff and support staff.
Skill Requirements:
- Managing and authoring processes and procedures
- Training and presenting technical information to staff
- QA/QC of the departments
- Fiscal and budgeting responsibilities
Responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Evaluating laboratory operations consulting with pathologists; reporting results according to protocols mandated by the hospital and public health department
- Ensuring maintenance of medical laboratory equipment performance by developing operations, quality, and troubleshooting procedures; ensuring staff compliance; certifying instrument performance; arranging equipment replacement, service, and repair
- Maintaining medical laboratory supplies inventory, determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies
- Maintaining laboratory productivity, monitoring workload, identifying peak and slack periods
- Participating in the hospital quality assurance program; consulting with pathologists; performing proficiency surveys; reviewing QC & QA programs
- Maintaining medical laboratory staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, training employees, counseling, reviewing/evaluating and disciplining employees as needed
- Complying with state and professional continuing education licensure requirements
- Contributing to benchwork as needed
Education, Certification, & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in related field required
- Master's degree in related field preferred
- Three (3) years of clinical experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) required
- Minimum three (3) years leadership experience in a laboratory required, acute care experience preferred
- Active California CLS license

As a Medical Technologist/MLT/Lab Technician, you will perform and interpret tests at all complexity levels. You will apply scientific and technical knowledge to perform and validate lab tests, identify abnormal results and determine when further testing is needed. You will also verify accuracy through quality control measures and communicate results and related information to authorized personnel.
This position offers opportunities for growth, as techs are cross trained in most lab areas, providing valuable experience for future transfers or advancement into full-time or part-time roles when available.
**This is a regular PRN position, with caregivers in this role working various night shifts between 9:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. or 11:00 p.m. - 7:30 a.m.**
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
+ Perform and interpret tests at all complexity levels
+ Communicate test results, reference ranges, specimen requirements and other pertinent information to authorized sources
+ Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
+ Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
+ Take action regarding any quality control or quality assurance issues as it pertains to specific job duties.
+ Assume responsibility for good documentation practices and maintain clear and legible records.
+ Perform proficiency testing in compliance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations i.e. analyze proficiency survey samples in the same manner as a patient specimen, no communication with other CLIA laboratories, complete record retention and accurate documentation and result reporting.
+ Assume responsibility for participation in continuing education, professional development and required annual competency assessment.
+ Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
+ Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or notify the General Supervisor, Technical Supervisor, Clinical Consultant or Laboratory Director.
+ Recommend solutions and improvements.
+ Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
+ May function as an educator and provide instruction and training in theory, technical skills, safety protocols and the application of laboratory test protocols to students, employees, residents, etc.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
+ Bachelor's degree in chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution
+ Meets the CLIA qualifications for high complexity testing personnel grandfathering clause
+ Problem solving/troubleshooting skills
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
+ Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or certification eligible preferred, from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT)
