PRIMARY PURPOSE:
- To implement a comprehensive program of health services for the campus, promote health education and preventive health practices for students and staff. Bridge the gap between health care and education. Services include leadership, community health, evidence-based practice, care coordination and quality improvement.
Education/Certification:
- Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program.
- Valid and current registered nurse license to practice professional nursing in Texas from the State Board of Nursing.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
- Complete Certification by Texas Department of State and Health Services to conduct vision and hearing screenings.
- BLS CPR/AED Certification
- Strong physical assessment skills and clinical knowledge.
- Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and computer skills.
- Ability to implement policies and procedures.
- Electronic thermometer, blood pressure cuff, audiometer, otoscope, sphygmomanometer, pulse oximeter, vision screening equipment, emergency oxygen, emergency use epinephrine, AED, basic clinic equipment, personal computer, copier, scanner, emergency oxygen, emergency epinephrine, AED, stop the bleed kit, emergency go bags, suction device if applicable.
- Two years nursing experience preferred.
- Provide direct patient care utilizing professional assessment skills, the nursing process, and district health protocols.
- Serve as health advocate for students and staff.
- Notify parents of accident or illness and secure medical care for students in emergency cases.
- Coordinate a management system to administer medications to students.
- Administer medications according to district policy and procedures.
- Establish and implement effective screening procedures as required by the Texas Department of Health, Texas Education Agency, and district policy. Make appropriate referrals as necessary.
- Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the campus health program and implement changes based on the findings.
- Participate in the development of the campus health education curriculum and provide health education to individuals and groups.
- Educate faculty and staff as needed on health-related topics.
- Provide health counseling and instruction on an individual basis
- Serve as health liaison between school, physicians, parents, and community.
- Assess student problems and make appropriate referrals working with students, teachers, parents, and medical and health care professionals as needed.
- Participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee, crisis team, and school committees.
- Develop Individual Health Plans for students that prevent illness, effect rehabilitation, promote, maintain, or restore health.
- Collaborate with other professionals regarding implementation of items included in health-related Individual Education Plans.
- Participate in assessment, reporting, and documentation of suspected child abuse.
- Make home visits to assist with student health problems as necessary with permission of and accompanied by a campus administrator.
- Communicate regularly with principal, health services director, school counselor, teachers, physical education or coaching staff, parents, food services, and other staff regarding health services issues.
- Maintain, review, evaluate, and update immunization records of students to ensure compliance with state mandated requirements.
- Supervise and train clinic aides and classroom staff in clinic procedures and responsibilities according to district policy if applicable.
- Train administrative staff in clinic procedures and responsibilities according to district policy.
- Train administrative, paraprofessional, and teaching staff in administration of special procedures as needed.
- Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computer reports, records, and other documents required, including clinic records and accurate, updated health records on all students.
- Coordinate with local and state health authorities to mitigate against communicable diseases and report as directed.
- Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory.
- Assume budgetary responsibility for individual clinic(s).
- Comply with policies established by federal and state law, Texas Department of Health rule, State Board of Education rule, Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners, Dallas County, and board policy regarding health services.
- Report potential campus health and safety hazards to principal, or other campus administrator if the principal is unavailable.
- Maintain certification in vision and hearing screening, and CPR/AED certification.
- Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
- Assume responsibility for continuing education and professional development and contribute to the professional growth of others.
- Follow all district policies, procedures, protocols, and health services guidelines.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Direct the work of assigned health clinic aide(s) as applicable
- Direct the work of Sped teacher and paraprofessionals in administration of special procedures. (For Special Education Nurses)
