Summary:
Provides genetic counseling to patients with a medical or family history of cancer and/or genetic disease and coordinates program services.
Responsibilities:

Requirements:
+ Master's degree in Genetic Counseling.

**Overview**
Kennedy Krieger Institute has a clinical focus of meeting the specialized needs of children and adults with neurodevelopmental disorders and rare diseases. We are seeking a full-time genetic counselor to join our thriving team of nine genetic counselors, three clinical geneticists, and over ten neurogenetics physicians. Based in the Department of Neurology and Developmental Medicine, this position will provide genetic counseling in outpatient clinics for patients with a range of neurogenetic conditions and neurodevelopmental disorders, bone and connective tissue disorders, and other rare diseases. These clinics include independent genetic counseling visits and working as part of a multidisciplinary team with neurologists, developmental pediatricians, geneticists and other specialists.
We are seeking a **Genetic Counselor** who has excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Principle duties and responsibilities are outlined below. The genetic counseling team receives extensive support from genetic counselor assistants, clinic coordinators, and administrative and nursing staff. This support allows the genetic counselors to practice at the top of their scope.
This position will report to the Director of Genetic Counseling Services. Additional mentorship and supervision will be provided by other members of the genetic counseling and neurogenetics team. **Responsibilities**
1. Provide comprehensive genetic counseling services for patients and families with known or suspected genetic disorders. Services may include standalone genetic counseling visits (face to face or, when appropriate, telehealth) as well as in conjunction with multidisciplinary clinic visits.
2. Obtain and analyze detailed medical, developmental, and family histories to assess genetic risk and determine the need for genetic testing or referrals.
3. Coordinate and facilitate appropriate genetic testing, including pre-test counseling, test selection, informed consent, and insurance authorization, in collaboration with Genetic Counselor Assistants and other institute support staff and services.

8. Document clinical interactions and maintain accurate, up-to-date medical records in compliance with Kennedy Krieger Institute, departmental, and regulatory guidelines.
9. Collaborate closely with neurologists, geneticists, and other specialists as part of a multidisciplinary care team to ensure integrated patient management.
10. Contribute to the development of clinical protocols and best practices for genetic counseling in neurology and rare disease settings. Assist with quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives.
11. May supervise and provide clinical training to genetic counseling students as assigned by department leadership, including observation, case preparation, feedback, and evaluation in accordance with program and accreditation requirements.
12. Provide educational support and training to medical staff, trainees, and community partners regarding genetic counseling, advances in genetic testing, and other relevant clinical topics.
13. **Job Description:**
**Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:**
- Obtain detailed family history and provide risk assessment. Order appropriate genetic tests and provide interpretation of test results.
- Develop and initiate follow-up plan based on genetic tests results by collaborating with physicians, other health care professional and family members. Provide counseling and education to both the patient and the family. Ensures the treatment plan is individualized based on the patient's and family's understanding.
- Assists patients in areas other than the primary specialty included but not limited to recognizing the patient's mental and physical conditions and initiates assistance from other health care professionals.
- Provides thorough and accurate documentation in the medical record by documenting all pertinent data, including family histories, risk assessments, genetic test results and appropriate follow-up.
- Communicates regularly with patients and families.
- Communicates appropriately with staff physicians, fellows, residents if applicable and clinical and administrative staff.
- Follows-up on all ordered genetic tests.
- Acts as a clinical resource to the Lahey staff.
- Works with the genetic counseling assistants to help coordinate genetic testing logistics, including at times sample collection and shipment.
- Provides appropriate referrals and support based on the results of genetic testing. Assists patient in communicating results with other providers and family members. Helps facilitate additional surveillance and consults for patients who are determined to be high risk.
- Provides support and participates in departmental programs (i.e. tumor boards, education conferences/symposia) to educate and update team members on issues related to genetic counseling and testing, including genetic discrimination, privacy and confidentiality, available genetic tests and guidelines for referral and follow-up of high risk patients.
- Provides education and supervision for rotation genetic counseling students from Boston University.

This position is for a genetic counselor with pediatric oncology experience, to work in the Pediatric Cancer Genetic Risk Program, part of the Dana-Farber/Boston Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center and the Center for Cancer Genetics & Prevention at Dana-Farber. While each genetic counselor may develop certain areas of expertise, all genetic counselors are cross-trained to be able to see the full range of pediatric and adult hereditary cancer conditions, including brain tumor syndromes, hematologic malignancies and bone marrow failure syndromes, telomere disorders, hereditary GI cancer syndromes, Li-Fraumeni syndrome, DICER1 syndrome, SDHx associated syndromes, VHL and others. Participation in numerous research initiatives is also possible and encouraged.

**Genetic Counselor I:**
+ Provide genetic counseling for patients in the Center for Cancer Genetics & Prevention.
+ Provide consultation services for patients in other Dana-Farber disease centers and clinics, including our Satellite location at South Shore
+ Review medical records documentation of cancer and other diagnoses to facilitate evaluation and assessment of family histories
+ Evaluate and select most appropriate genetic testing options and optimal laboratory
+ Coordinate collection of blood and tissue samples for genetic analysis
+ Complete required documentation in electronic medical record
+ Assists with variant interpretation for clinical cases
+ Communicate with patients, other genetic counselors and health care professionals to review family histories and determine eligibility for genetic testing and research protocols
+ Aid in the professional development of genetic counseling interns, medical students and other health care providers
**Genetic Counselor II:**
In addition to the above, this position will require the individual to undertake an increasingly independent role. The individual will also be expected to become more deeply involved in one or more key facets of the profession including supervision, training, education and research. Individuals at this level will be expected to participate in many of the following:
+ Provide genetic counseling services for satellite clinics as part of Dana-Farber's community outreach programs or actively participate in the development and expansion of existing Dana-Farber clinics/consult programs
+ Educate oncology and community health care providers about cancer genetics, hereditary cancer syndromes and appropriate referrals
+ Facilitate patient support groups, organize patient educational seminars and conferences and create patient-oriented materials regarding cancer genetics
+ Teach genetics classes for genetic counseling students and medical students
+ Clinically supervise genetic counseling interns, medical students and genetics fellows
+ Communicate with media and outside organizations regarding cancer genetics, hereditary cancer syndromes and genetic counseling services
+ Aid in clinical research studies on hereditary cancer syndromes and/or cancer prevention
+ Submit data for abstracts or presentation at major genetics and/or oncology meetings and/or submit manuscripts for publication
**Genetic Counselor III:**
In addition to the above, this position will require the individual to undertake an increasingly independent role. The individual will also be expected to become more deeply involved in one or more key facets of the profession including supervision, training, education and research. Individuals at this level will be expected to participate in many of the following:
+ Lead and assist in clinical research studies on hereditary cancer syndromes and/or cancer prevention
+ Demonstrate proficiency and autonomy in managing complex, cross disease center projects including analysis and interpretation of high-level results
+ Participate in the Institute's initiative on genomic analysis for patients as it applies to hereditary cancer
+ Serve as a mentor and guide for other staff through experience in counseling for specific diseases and encouraging professional growth
+ Aid in the training of genetic counselors and other staff in variant analysis and interpretation
+ Coordinate internal education of genetic counselors and other staff in the CGP through patient reviews, journal clubs and lectures as necessary
+ Initiate, delegate and oversee clinical research projects with an advanced level of complexity
**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:**
**Genetic Counselor I:**
+ Ability to provide genetic counseling through collection of family history, assessment and evaluation of histories, knowledge of genetics and appropriate testing, and psychosocial support
+ Basic knowledge of hereditary cancer syndromes, cancer genetics and cancer risk assessment tools
+ Some experience in cancer genetic counseling, medical research and genetic technologies
+ Ability to tailor, translate and communicate complex information in a simple, relevant way for a broad range of audiences (in both oral and written format)
+ Knowledge of pedigree standards and specialized pedigree-drawing software
+ Ability to work in a collaborative environment with other members of the Center for Cancer Genetics & Prevention team
+ Strong interpersonal skills and emotional awareness
+ Research skills, especially the ability to review and synthesize relevant medical literature
**Genetic Counselor II:**
This position will require more advanced knowledge, skills, and abilities than that of Genetic Counselor I:
+ Ability to provide genetic counseling through collection of family history, assessment and evaluation of histories, knowledge of genetics and appropriate testing, and psychosocial support
+ Expert knowledge of the major hereditary cancer syndromes, cancer genetics and cancer risk assessment tools

**Overview**

**What to Expect:**
The Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) practice consists of seven MFM physicians, one nurse practitioner, and two genetic counselors. We provide care across two main clinical offices and a weekly outreach clinic. This position is primarily based at our Nampa clinic, with occasional opportunities to see patients at other locations. Our team works closely together to bring diverse perspectives and deliver the highest quality of care to patients in Idaho and beyond. Genetic counselors in our practice support patients at key times, including preconception, infertility, during pregnancy, and after delivery.
The Genetic Counselor is responsible for researching, collecting information, and counseling clients with genetic or fetal abnormalities.
+ Provides specialty consultation to healthcare staff, including physicians and other primary care providers. Serve as resource to physicians, hospital staff, and parents.
+ Discusses prognosis and management options; explain disease signs and symptoms, probability of recurrence, prognosis, diagnostic methods and procedures, alternate courses of action and available options.
+ Coordinates patient care with social services, clergy, healthcare providers and other resources based upon evaluation of individual patient needs.
+ Compiles complete family history, obtain and review medical records, assess risk of genetic disease and provide grief and crisis counseling to individuals and/or families.
+ Participates in partnerships, projects and strategic planning involving genetics across the Health System. Serves as resource to physicians, hospital staff, and parents.
+ Documents care provided in the medical record.
+ Provides community outreach, education, public policy advocacy and philanthropy for areas that genetics is involved in.
+ Provides follow-up patient care.
+ May perform duties to assure compliance with COC requirements.
+ Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

**Position Summary**
At Stony Brook University Hospital, our Children's Hospital Genetic **Counselors participate in all aspects of counseling including in the Pediatric setting as** well as providing collaborative support for the Stony Brook Cancer Center and prenatal services as part of the clinical and medical geneticist team. This position is integral to Stony Brook Children's Hospital and provides the opportunity excel in multidisciplinary teams focused on excellence in patient diagnosis, care coordination and patient-centered communication.
**Duties of a** **Genetic Counselor** **may include the following but are not limited to:**
* **Provide all aspects of prenatal genetic counseling including arranging for testing as well as communication with care providers**
* **Assess personal and family histories associated with Hereditary Cancer syndromes and arrange for testing**
+ Document clinic sessions with notes written in a timely fashion.
+ Order Genetic labs tests, keep in touch with labs and patients, obtain consents.
+ Collaborate with genetic counseling team members to provide cross-coverage of on **cology, pediatric and prenatal services as needed** .
+ Discuss benefits and limitations of genetic testing options.
+ Assist families in understanding genetic disorders: probable course of the disorder, available management strategies, and recurrence risks.
+ Develop and present education and related information with team as appropriate.
+ Participate in research protocols and collaborative patient care initiatives as directed.
+ Perform administrative tasks related to counseling services and committees or special projects in which participation is expected.
+ Provide teaching and supervision to students or other health care professionals as appropriate.
+ Other duties as assigned
**Required Qualifications:**
+ **Master's** degree in Genetic Counseling
+ Board eligible/certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics/American Board of Genetic Counseling. If board eligible, achievement of this milestone required within 1 year of employment.
+ Excellent communication skills, compassion for patients and collaborative work ethic
**Preferred Qualifications:**
+ Fluent in both English and Spanish
+ Demonstrated experience counseling in Pediatrics, Prenatal, and/or Oncology
+ Proven ability in both team-based and autonomous environments
