**Genetic Counselor II:**
In addition to the above, this position will require the individual to undertake an increasingly independent role. The individual will also be expected to become more deeply involved in one or more key facets of the profession including supervision, training, education and research. Individuals at this level will be expected to participate in many of the following:
+ Provide genetic counseling services for satellite clinics as part of Dana-Farber's community outreach programs or actively participate in the development and expansion of existing Dana-Farber clinics/consult programs
+ Educate oncology and community health care providers about cancer genetics, hereditary cancer syndromes and appropriate referrals
+ Facilitate patient support groups, organize patient educational seminars and conferences and create patient-oriented materials regarding cancer genetics
+ Teach genetics classes for genetic counseling students and medical students
+ Clinically supervise genetic counseling interns, medical students and genetics fellows
+ Communicate with media and outside organizations regarding cancer genetics, hereditary cancer syndromes and genetic counseling services
+ Aid in clinical research studies on hereditary cancer syndromes and/or cancer prevention
+ Submit data for abstracts or presentation at major genetics and/or oncology meetings and/or submit manuscripts for publication
**Genetic Counselor III:**
In addition to the above, this position will require the individual to undertake an increasingly independent role. The individual will also be expected to become more deeply involved in one or more key facets of the profession including supervision, training, education and research. Individuals at this level will be expected to participate in many of the following:
+ Lead and assist in clinical research studies on hereditary cancer syndromes and/or cancer prevention
+ Demonstrate proficiency and autonomy in managing complex, cross disease center projects including analysis and interpretation of high-level results
+ Participate in the Institute's initiative on genomic analysis for patients as it applies to hereditary cancer
+ Serve as a mentor and guide for other staff through experience in counseling for specific diseases and encouraging professional growth
+ Aid in the training of genetic counselors and other staff in variant analysis and interpretation
+ Coordinate internal education of genetic counselors and other staff in the CGP through patient reviews, journal clubs and lectures as necessary
+ Initiate, delegate and oversee clinical research projects with an advanced level of complexity
**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:**
**Genetic Counselor I:**
+ Ability to provide genetic counseling through collection of family history, assessment and evaluation of histories, knowledge of genetics and appropriate testing, and psychosocial support

This position will require more advanced knowledge, skills, and abilities than that of Genetic Counselor I:

+ Expert knowledge of the major hereditary cancer syndromes, cancer genetics and cancer risk assessment tools
+ Some knowledge of whole genome analysis and personalized genomic medicine

**Position Summary**
Under general supervision, provides genetic testing, education and support to patients and provides programmatic support to the department’s clinical program(s).
**Job Responsibilities**
+ Interviews patients and families to obtain relevant genetic medical and psychological information. Evaluates data supplied to determine proper plan of diagnosis or treatment.
+ Explains diagnostic and screening tests and reproductive options including associated risks, benefits, and limitations. Refers patients to physicians, therapists, etc for further counseling/treatment.
+ Communicates information to patients about methods used to determine carrier state in order to arrange for testing of other family members when appropriate.
+ Obtains appropriate informed consent for genetic testing of patients and families as needed.
+ Prepares reports, correspondence, and maintains charts with genetic information. Works with psychosocial staff to assure care and clarity in discussion with families.
+ Maintains an updated pedigree for each affected patient/family. Maintains electronic and hard copy files and databases with integrity of information.
+ If relevant, coordinates subject visits in the research clinics. Oversees case scheduling, physician availability for research clinic and conferences for case and project discussion.
+ Obtains informed consent from research subjects as needed.
+ Updates and maintains IRB protocol approvals as needed.
+ Conducts literature research.
+ Maintains current knowledge of field. Participates in genetic conferences and lectures sponsored by the medical college and outside community agencies.
+ Performs other related duties as directed.
**Education**
+ Bachelor's Degree in related field
**Experience**
Certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling preferred, inclusive of Master's degree.
Approximately 1 year of related experience.
**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**
+ Demonstrates knowledge of principles of human, medical, and public health genetics and genomics and their related sciences.
+ Ability to employ active listening and interviewing skills to identify, assess, and empathically respond to stated and emerging concerns.
+ Ability to use a range of genetic counseling skills and models to facilitate informed decision making and adaptation to genetic risks or conditions.
+ Ability to promote client-centered, informed, noncoercive and value-based decision-making.
+ Understanding of how to adapt genetic counseling skills for varied service delivery models.
+ Ability to apply genetic counseling skills in a culturally responsive and respectful manner to all clients.
+ Ability to write concise and understandable clinical and scientific information for audiences of varying educational backgrounds.
