Position Overview:
CWF is seeking to hire two GIS Technicians. The Technician will support national freshwater conservation efforts through geospatial data management and analysis. This role contributes to the development of the Canadian Aquatic Barriers Database (CABD) and Watershed Connectivity Restoration Planning (WCRP) initiatives, which inform the restoration of aquatic ecosystems across Canada.
Reporting to the Senior Spatial Analyst and Junior Spatial Ecologist, the GIS Technician works as part of a collaborative team of technicians contributing to the collection, validation, and management of spatial data. This position supports data acquisition, quality control, database population, and geospatial analysis to deepen our understanding of aquatic ecosystems and improve fish passage and habitat connectivity nationwide.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manages, updates, and conducts queries on existing geospatial databases, ensuring data is accurate, up-to-date, and easily accessible for all team members and stakeholders.
- Performs QA/QCs of barrier datasets to ensure data consistency and quality, identifying and removing duplicate data points as required to maintain data integrity.
- Uses geoprocessing tools to ensure hydrographic networks are structurally and topologically compliant and facilitate network analysis.
- Researches and identifies databases and inventories of aquatic barriers across Canada.
- Compiles and aggregates aquatic barrier data from multiple sources and formats into a standardized data structure.
- Executes scripts (i.e., Python, SQL) to query data and automate processes.
- Produces maps, diagrams, and other visual communication products to effectively convey data analysis results.
- Work with team members to ensure all data management and spatial analysis needs are being met and support project objectives.
- Assists with other conservation activities as required.
Required:
- 2-year College certificate in GIS, Geomatics, or a related field.
- Minimum 1 year of related experience required.
- Experience working with geospatial databases and conducting basic spatial data analysis using GIS software (i.e., ArcGIS, QGIS).
- Familiarity with geoprocessing tools and techniques, including network analysis and data cleaning.
- Strong data management skills, with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to perform quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) tasks on large datasets.
- Experience compiling and standardizing data from multiple sources and formats.
- Proficiency in creating maps and visualizations to communicate spatial data and analysis results.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
- Ability to organize and document work clearly and consistently.
- Knowledge of hydrological, biological, topographic, and land use spatial datasets, particularly related to aquatic connectivity or barrier inventories.
- Familiarity with Canadian freshwater systems, watersheds, or conservation projects.
- Experience with PostgreSQL DBMS.
- Experience writing SQL scripts for database management and data extraction.
- Experience writing and executing code and scripts for data manipulation and spatial analysis in Python or other programming languages.
- Experience contributing to multi-person GIS projects or working within a larger technical team.
- Ability to communicate in French.
- Full-time, determinate 6-month contract from Oct. 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026.
- Typically working Monday through Friday for 37.5 hours per week.
- Salary can range from 42,635 to 53,293 per year. Offered salary is determined based on education, experience, and internal parity.
- Location: Ideally, based at our Head Office in Kanata (Ottawa West), Ontario, with hybrid flexibility to work from home two consecutive days per week. Remote candidates outside of Ottawa can be considered.
