Overview:
The Training Aircraft Readiness Data Scientist (Senior) will support the Naval Undergraduate Flight Training Systems Program Office at Patuxent River Naval Air Station in Lexington Park, MD. The program which this position supports is responsible for managing the aircraft, simulators, and associated systems that support the U.S. Navy’s undergraduate pilot training pipeline.  This Program Office’s purview includes the acquisition, development and maintenance of six trainer aircraft: TH-73 Thrasher, T-44 Pegasus, T-45 Goshawk, T-6 Texan II, and T-54A Marlin II. These aircraft and programs also include related simulator suites, academic materials, computer-based training integration systems and contractor logistics support

Primary Duties:

• Lead advanced training aircraft readiness analysis, applying statistical modeling, predictive analytics, and readiness metrics evaluation to identify trends, assess training aircraft readiness performance, and provide actionable insights that improve mission availability.
• Provides high-level subject matter expertise, analysis, and technical guidance to support project execution.

Qualifications:

• Proficiency in analyzing and extracting data from DoD aviation maintenance and logistics systems (e.g., NALDA, OOMA, DECKPLATE).
• Experience working with aircraft maintenance, logistics, and readiness data to evaluate fleet performance and operational availability.
• Knowledge of DoD aviation maintenance processes, readiness metrics (Full-Mission Capable (FMC) & Mission Capable (MC) rates) and reporting standards.
• Ability to integrate data across multiple DoD systems to perform trend analysis, predictive maintenance forecasting, and readiness assessments.
• Familiarity with DoD data governance, security, and compliance requirements, including handling of controlled unclassified information (CUI).
• Experience building dashboards and readiness reports for senior leadership and program managers within defense organizations.
• Expertise in applying statistical and analytical methods directly to aircraft sustainment and operational readiness problems.

Education and Experience:

• Management, Technical or Scientific MS or MA degree from an accredited college or university.
• An allowable substitution is a Business, Management, Technical or Scientific BS or BA degree from an accredited college or university and an additional four (4) years of recent and relevant experience.
• Must have at least ten (10) years of recent and relevant experience in an engineering or operations analysis position, three (3) of which must be directly related to DoD systems.

Clearance:
This position is subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. In order to complete the requirements for government security clearance investigation you must be a U.S. Citizen and be able to complete the full background investigation. This position requires an Active Secret Security Clearance with ability to obtain and maintain a higher clearance if required.

Compensation:
While skills, education, and experience are key factors, they are not the sole determinants of salary. Other determining factors include but are not limited to location, contract budgets and requirements, and government labor category guidelines. The estimated salary range for this position is $115,000-$150,000. KAIROS also provides a comprehensive benefits package as additional employee compensation.

**Required Skills and Experience:**

+ BS or BA degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering or Computer Engineering from a college program with ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc.) certification.
+ 10+ years of software engineering experience, performing software requirements analysis, software design, software coding, software integration and software testing.
+ 5+ years of experience shall have consisted of performing software engineering functions for a DoD aircraft systems, DoD weapons systems, DoD mission systems or DoD support systems.
+ Demonstrated experience in all phases of the software engineering lifecycle

The following Key Responsibilities are basic requirements (other duties may be assigned as needed ):

• Develop, test, and maintain software applications using C#, C, and C++.
• Software development, deployment, and troubleshooting.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement aircraft instrumentation systems.
• Configure and optimize software for microprocessors and embedded systems.
• Develop and troubleshoot communication protocols such as Ethernet, RS232, RS422, and others.
• Contribute to GUI development using HTML coding as needed.
• Ensure compliance with Information Assurance (IA) processes and standards.
• Document software designs, processes, and testing results to ensure traceability and compliance.
• Stay updated on emerging technologies and tools relevant to aircraft instrumentation.

Work Conditions:

• Conditions will vary but most of the work will be performed in enclosed buildings.

Requirements:

Education/Experience/Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering or Computer Science.
• Three or more (3+) years of professional experience in software development, preferably in the aerospace or instrumentation domain.
• Strong coding, analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
• Self-motivated with a keen attention to detail.
• Proficiency in C#, C, and C++ programming languages (preferred) .

• Familiarity with avionics (specifically mission computers, software defined radios, operational flight program development, and any other software related to naval aircraft)
• Ability to communicate with leadership, fleet personnel, and peers
• Knowledge of embedded coding languages, specifically C, C++, Ada95, or Ada98
• Superior organizational skills
• Program Office level Software development program (prior experience working at a program office specifying, managing, or acquiring software products for military aviation -Naval Air, Naval Sea, Marines, Army, or Airforce aviation.
• 10+ years software engineering experience

Education:

BS Computer Science or Engineering required and 10 years of related experience.

Security Clearance:

Active Top Secret clearance required. Requirements to obtain a clearance include US Citizenship, security investigation, etc.
