Summary:
The Associate Director Foundation & Government Support is a senior member of Safe Horizon’s 5-person grants team within the Development and Communications department. The Associate Director will have deep knowledge of and experience with securing grants from government funders at the federal, state, and city levels and some experience securing funding from private foundations. They will be experienced in handling all aspects of proposal development, submission and grant reporting in collaboration with Program, Finance, Research and Evaluation and other departments. They will ensure timely and accurate planning, design, production and submission of proposals and grant reports. They will research funders, funding opportunities and advise on funder engagement and stewardship strategies. The Associate Director will be an experienced frontline fundraiser with 5 years of experience in grant writing and cultivating relationships with funders, particularly from government sources.
The Associate Director of Foundation and Government Support will proactively bring creative ideas, solutions and approaches to raising Safe Horizon’s profile and generating new, lasting funder relationships. The ability to cultivate and sustain relationships with external partners is essential, as is a strong commitment to Safe Horizon’s organizational values and vision. The Associate Director will work closely with the Associate Vice President of Foundation and Government Support to achieve annual fundraising goals and strategies and will collaborate with the Director of Foundation and Government Support to advance department goals.
This is an exciting time to join the team as Safe Horizon launches its next five-year strategic plan which focuses on expanding opportunities for survivor leadership, advocacy, community-centered practices and anti-racism across all areas.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Leads or co-leads all aspects of government procurements and partners with the AVP of Foundation and Government Support on major cross-agency government renewals.
- Manages the proposal, report, and renewal process for government and foundation funding opportunities, including collaborating with Program and Research and Evaluation to gather narrative and statistical information and with Finance to ensure timely and accurate program/project budgets.
- Writes compelling proposals and reports that are tailored to specific funder interests.
- Leads all aspects of grants development and management, including defining and monitoring outcomes in collaboration with Program and the Research and Evaluation
- Department, and developing tailored budgets in partnership with the Finance Department.
- Proactively cultivates relationships with existing and prospective donors through discussion, correspondence, meetings, and site visits.
- Researches whether and how funding interests relate to Safe Horizon’s programs and guides strategic decisions related to how we pitch, position, choose, shape, or design ideas/programs for funding according to funder interest and context.
- Implements all aspects of internal management of grant awards, including awards processing, finance requests, data requests and reporting requirements in partnership with Development, Finance, R&E and Program colleagues.
- Shares learnings from Program and Research & Evaluation colleagues with the Development and Communications Department and partners with others across the department to amplify client impact stories and advance organizational priorities.
- Monitors online and print publications for government funding opportunities, industry trends, evaluating them for relevance to Safe Horizon’s mission and programs.
- Collaborates with AVP Foundation & Government Support and Director Foundation & Government Support to ensure smooth functioning of Foundation & Government Support team, operational excellence and increase efficiencies within the department.
- Assists the AVP Foundation & Government Support by providing guidance and input on leadership of the team, management of important funder relationships, and other key areas.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- 5 years of grant writing and fundraising experience, particularly with securing funding from federal, state, and/or city funders
- Advanced/superior writing skills – the successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to capture the purpose, importance and impact of programs and projects with an emphasis on effective structure, grammar, succinctness, and alignment with foundations’ giving interests.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written), including strong presentation and negotiation skills.
- Experience with budget preparation and/or analysis – ability to review budgets and ensure alignment with the funder’s interests and the proposal narrative.
- Ability to work independently and under stress, manage demanding and conflicting priorities to meet deadlines with well-crafted proposals and reports.
- Sophisticated data management and research skills.
- Excellent project management and relationship management skills.
- Sophisticated knowledge of the victim services or parallel social justice field, with the ability to contribute to programmatic decisions related to funding opportunities.
- Strong commitment to Safe Horizon’s organizational values of client-centered, trauma-informed practice, anti-racism, and community-centered programming with the ability to integrate agency values into leadership, strategy, grant design and writing.
- Strong working knowledge of local, state and federal government funding structures and funding trends.
- Experience with Salesforce (or comparable donor database), MS Suite and comfort interfacing with government grant portals.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; background in social justice or human services preferred.
- Ability to travel within New York City as needed.
Hiring Range: $80,000 - $86,000 Annually
Full-time Hours: 35 Hours per week

The Foundation and Government Support team is a fast-paced, mission-driven group of professionals with expertise in all aspects of portfolio management and new business generation. The Senior Portfolio Manager advances Ocean Conservancys philanthropic partnerships with foundations and government agencies, playing a key role in managing the teams $0 million portfolio and ensuring successful management and operation of their own portfolio. This position will provide comprehensive management for a docket of U.S.-based and international foundation and government donors, including assembling and submitting grant proposals and reports, establishing and maintaining relationships with donors, conducting prospect research, and maintaining donor records. - Contributes to other written materials that serve the organizations mission and conservation agenda as needed.
- Ensures continuity in and accountability for relationship management by maintaining systems and files to track funder contacts, funder profiles, proposal and reporting deadlines, and philanthropic commitments in Raisers Edge and hard-copy files. Also responsible for tracking proposal and report preparation assignments with program staff.
- Advances efforts to streamline grant management processes and procedures.
REQUIRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of five years of experience in grant writing, editing and related work (with proven track record of successful grant awards);
- Strong preference for experience working at a nonprofit organization, especially either domestic or global policy advocacy groups and/or conservation-related groups;
- Experience reviewing budgets and financial reports preferred;
- Strong written communication skills;
- Strong grammar and editing skills (knowledge of AP style a plus);

- Provide cabling support and run cables within data centers, LAN rooms, and remote wiring closets
- Analyzes functional business requirements and design specifications for functional activities
- Effectively contribute to technical discussions and develop and present required briefing materials to ensure the customer's needs are met
- Should provide identification/fixing for the problems within existing systems design/implementation of new systems, enhances the existing systems and participates in analysis, design, and new construction of next generation IT systems
- Responsible for understanding the needs of the customers and the realities of commercially available IT products and creating requirements that will allow implementation by the architecture and engineering team and COTS products
- Must possess experience of system engineering in one or more areas including telecommunications concepts, computer languages, operating systems, database/DBMS, and middleware
Must be a U.S. Citizen and pass the DHS Employment Eligibility Verification process. Associate Degree or equivalent experience, 1+ years' of IT-related support experience, preferably in a helpdesk or customer support role, demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve desktop, network, or other IT issues, general knowledge network products and systems, experience in a rapid paced, time sensitive, high-quality environment, must have excellent team skills and collaboration skills, attention to detail and follow-through, ability to work with minimal supervision, must pass Motor Vehicle Records check as this position is classified as a "Regular Driver" and overnight travel may be required (Actual travel percentage varies based on location but is typically less than 20%). Must maintain a state of travel readiness required to take prompt action on support requests which may require local and/or overnight travel to Government locations (Local short notice travel to customer sites is common, extended overnight and air travel is typically less than 5% per year). Must be comfortable working in a Law Enforcement environment which may consist of locations similar to detention facilities, prisons, or jails. If the position requires you to enter certain facilities, you may be required to wear personal protective equipment and adhere to social distancing requirements.
Desired QualificationsPrior experience providing technical enterprise support within a large, complex organization, dealing with a wide range of users, systems, and networks. Possesses and applies expertise on multiple complex work assignments which are broad in nature, requiring originality and innovation in determining how to accomplish tasks. Ability to apply comprehensive knowledge across key tasks and high impact assignments. Experience evaluating system performance results and recommending improvements or optimizations. Experience performing IT hardware repairs and installing replacement parts. Experience planning and leading technology assignments and projects. Prior hands-on experience with the setup, configuration, and administration of servers and backups. Experience functioning as a technical expert across multiple project assignments. ITIL v4, MCSE, A+, Security+, Network+, or other relevant certifications. Outstanding communication skills in both formal and informal formats with customers, stakeholders, and technical specialists. This work requires that an individual position themselves to access computer and related equipment connections and be able to transport objects or equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
