Requirements for this Grading Operator job

The Grading Foreman can be either an exempt or non-exempt position responsible for managing and directing grading crews involved in site work.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily tasks of the grading crew.
  • Read and understand project plans and specifications; Coordinate with site management for all grading.
  • Reports on work to Superintendent.
  • Experienced on all types of heavy equipment for dirt and site projects.

Experience and Requirements

  • The ideal candidate will have 3 or more years experience as a Grade Foreman; a High School Diploma or GED is preferred.

Working Conditions

  • This job requires the ability to lift, pull, and push up to 50 lbs; bend, stoop, kneel, reach, squat twist, and climb heavy equipment several times throughout the day, and balance at heights up to 6 feet from ground level. In addition, you must have the ability to be on your feet regularly and use hands, arms, and legs repeatedly on the job. This includes frequently walking on sloped ground and slippery and uneven surfaces, as well as working in confined areas.
  • Must be able to climb on and off heavy equipment safely.
  • Must be capable of being certified to enter confined spaces, including climbing into and out of excavations, using ladders or crawling, as required.
  • This job requires the ability to perform essential tasks in less than favorable conditions. These may include but are not limited to: Performing strenuous work in varying temperatures, humidity, sand, wind, or other extreme inclement weather conditions for extended periods of time.

The Project Superintendent-Grading manages multiple construction projects, coordinates labor and equipment to construct projects, schedules subcontractors and material suppliers, manages and supervises employees on assigned projects, tracks and reports materials, and schedules, coordinates, and communicates with customers and internal employees. The incumbent supervises, manages, and directs the selection, training, development, and appraisal of its own employees. Knowledge of grading equipment is necessary. Normal work hours are day or night shift, eight (8) to fourteen (14) hour days Monday through Friday. Weekend work may be required depending on the contract. **Responsibilities**
-    Provide supervisory direction of craft workers via the general foreman and foreman, managing the performance of productivity, safety, quality and schedule adherence
-    Liaison between field engineering and craft to ensure compliance of construction drawings and specifications
-    Coordinate and interface effectively with other superintendents and subcontractors, as well as Kiewit staff personnel and leadership to ensure smooth workflow and schedule adherence
-    Resolve employee conflicts, grievances, and scheduling difficulties, informing project and corporate management as appropriate
-    Assist in schedule planning, determining craft labor levels, material quantities, and equipment requirements
-    Ensure project rules, procedures and programs are followed consistently, including those involving safety, attendance, and workplace behavior standards as reflected in Company's non-harassment and nondiscrimination policies #LI-AB3
**Qualifications**
-    5+ years' work experience in the construction industry, with at least 3+ years in a supervisory role overseeing grading operations
-    Previous knowledge/experience in heavy civil construction setting required
-    Advanced knowledge of various construction disciplines, union agreements and jurisdictional issues, safety regulations, scheduling, cost control, engineering drawings and other documents
-    Demonstrated ability to efficiently supervise and evaluate craft performance
-    Highly motivated, with a demonstrated passion for excellence and taking initiative
-    Strong work ethic, willing to do what it takes to get the job done right the first time
-    Demonstrated commitment to ethics and integrity
-    Passion for safety, with the ability to help us ensure that nobody gets hurt
-    Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
-    Team player with the ability to work independently to meet deadlines, goals and objectives
-    Strong organization, time management, and attention to detail
