Environment California is seeking a Clean Energy Advocate to run campaigns to get more clean, renewable energy powering Californias homes, schools, businesses and transportation system.

As our Clean Energy Advocate, youll work with the State Director and the national clean energy program team at Environment America to:

  • Stand up for rooftop solar and storage so we can catch the sun on more rooftops and save it for later too.
  • Go big on offshore wind.
  • Reduce energy waste with more efficiency and effective conservation programs.

Key Responsibilities

Our Advocate will work with our Director and other staff on campaigns for more clean renewable energy to power Californias homes, schools and businesses with 100% renewable energy.This position requires exercising discretion and independent judgment in making decisions in matters of significance. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Program : Run our campaigns for clean energy in California, including policy development, research and messaging.
  • Advocacy: Represent Environment California and advance our strategy in the California State Capitol. Develop strong and collaborative relationships with state agencies, partner organizations, coalitions, legislators and legislative staff on both sides of the aisle, and other stakeholders to advance shared goals. Seek out and identify policy opportunities related to our issue portfolio and make recommendations regarding policy positions and messaging.
  • Communications and Media Outreach: Work with your team to develop materials for lawmakers, the public, and the media to help advance our campaigns, including opinion editorials, press releases, letters to the editor, campaign action emails, fact sheets, bill summaries and policy briefs, regulatory comments, analyses, and presentations.
  • Fundraising: Fundraise from charitable foundations and individual donors to support our program.
  • Build the team: You will be part of a California-based team of advocates and campaign staff working to advance our policy goals. Advocates may serve as mentors or supervisors to less experienced staff, recruit and train new interns and volunteers to increase our impact and build our power, and participate in recruitment of new staff.

Qualifications

You are:

  • A campaign advocate, campaign staffer or grassroots organizer with at least 3 years of experience team building and/or coalition building.
  • An effective communicator with excellent writing and public speaking skills. Experience with traditional media or digital communications is a plus.
  • Creative and effective at solving complex problems; a strategic thinker who can take advantage of new opportunities.
  • A people person and good listener with a track record of successful access-building; willing and interested in working with people who think differently than you.
  • Well-organized and able to work on multiple legislative and administrative proposals at once.
  • Demonstrated commitment to environmental and public interest issues and to citizen-based social change.
  • A proven ability to recruit, train and develop staff, raise money, and demonstrated success in building relationships with the full spectrum of environmental and political stakeholders.

Compensation and Benefits

The starting compensation range for someone with 3-5 years of relevant experience is 39,000- 42,000. Candidates on the lower end of directly relevant experience should expect to be on the lower end of this range; candidates on the higher end of relevant experience are likely to be on the higher end of this range. Environment California offers an excellent benefits package. Physical Demands

Position Overview:
The Hudson Clean Heat Applications Engineer will be responsible for the design, coordination, and implementation of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems for commercial, industrial, and institutional projects utilizing the latest in water source heat pump technology and any other non-carbon based heating and cooling technology. This role requires applied engineering experience in MEP disciplines and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to ensure effective project delivery. The engineer will support the Sales Team in design development, construction documentation, and the Project Management team in the project execution, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards, and project specifications while meeting the project timelines and cost targets.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Design & Engineering Development
    • Prepare detailed design layouts, calculations, and specifications for heat pump, electrical, and plumbing systems.
    • Perform equipment selection and sizing, load calculations, and energy analysis.
    • Review and apply relevant building codes, standards (ASHRAE, NFPA, NEC, IPC), and regulatory requirements.
    • Develop schematic designs and support design development and construction documents.
  2. Project Coordination
    • Collaborate with the Sales Team on the pre-sale engineering characteristics of projects.
    • Collaborate with architects, structural engineers, contractors, and other disciplines to ensure integrated design solutions.
    • Coordinate MEP systems across project teams to resolve conflicts and design issues.
    • Support the project manager in preparing design packages for client review and approval.
    • Participate in project meetings and communicate engineering concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  3. Construction & Implementation Support
    • Review submittals, shop drawings, and Requests for Information (RFIs) during the construction phase.
    • Together with the Project Manager, conduct site visits and inspections to monitor compliance with design intent and installation quality.
    • Assist in commissioning support and functional performance testing of MEP systems.
  4. Technical Documentation & Reporting
    • Prepare engineering reports, technical specifications, basis of design documents, and other project deliverables.
    • Maintain accurate documentation throughout the project lifecycle, including design revisions and field observations.
    • Participate in value engineering exercises and support lifecycle cost analysis.
  5. Compliance & Safety
    • Ensure that all designs comply with environmental, health, and safety regulations.
    • Incorporate sustainable design principles and energy efficiency best practices where applicable.
  6. Continuous Improvement & Professional Development
    • Stay current with technological advancements, industry best practices, and code changes in MEP disciplines.
    • Pursue professional development opportunities, including licensure (e.g., PE, LEED AP).

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, Electrical, or Architectural Engineering, or related field.
  • Approximately 3-5 years of experience in MEP design and engineering.
  • Proficiency in design software (AutoCAD MEP, Revit, and/or similar BIM tools).
  • Familiarity with energy modeling software and calculation tools is .
  • Strong understanding of construction processes and building systems integration.
  • Effective communication and coordination skills.
  • EIT certification ; PE license is advantageous but not mandatory at this level.

**Asset Controller**

+ Oversight and coordination of the preparation of the asset's budget (alongside internal and external stakeholders) and ongoing actual versus budget appraisal process (monthly).
+ Update of rolling cash forecasts to identify potential cost overrun or upside, and management of funding of projects in collaboration with the Fund Finance team.
+ Implementing best in class and validating the monthly closures, invoicing, and payment supervision. In the short term, this will be a hands-on role.

The Heising-Simons Foundation is a family foundation based in Los Altos and San Francisco, California. The Foundation works with its many partners to advance sustainable solutions in climate and clean energy, enable groundbreaking research in science, enhance the education of our youngest learners, and support human rights for all people. In 2021, the Foundation awarded more than $141 million in grants. The Foundations grantmaking is guided by the values of humility, courage, justice, opportunity, sustainability, innovation, relationships, and integrity.

In 2022, the Heising-Simons Foundation is piloting hybrid work. During the pilot, this position may work from home and/or from one of our Foundation offices. Staff are required to be on-site for a minimum of 10 days per quarter and as needed to successfully onboard and fulfill their responsibilities.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Program Associate (PA) provides administrative and program-related support to the Foundations Climate & Clean Energy team. The goal of the Foundations CCE program is to protect people and the planet from the worst impacts of climate change by cutting pollution and accelerating the transition to a clean energy future. We aim to help make energy clean, affordable, safe, and reliable for all.

In 2021, the CCE team made 61 grants totaling approximately $5M in grant funding through the Foundation and 17 grants totaling 10.4M through the Heising-Simons Action Fund. It is anticipated that the volume and amount will stay the from 2021 to 2022. The CCE team is currently staffed by one PA, two Program Officers (PO), and the Program Director (PD). This role will work in partnership with the current PA to provide support to the teams PD and POs.

This position is an opportunity to learn about the fields of climate and clean energy and philanthropy. Candidates are not expected to have experience in all areas listed in the job posting.

This full-time (37.5 hours per week) non-exempt (hourly) position reports to a PO of the CCE team. This position can be located in either our Los Altos or San Francisco office and may work remotely for the majority of 2022. Starting in 2023, we may require staff to spend more time in the office and work less time remotely.

COMPENSATION

The target starting salary for this position is 74,000- 87,000 per year, depending on location, experience, and internal equity. In addition, we allow flexible schedules and some telecommuting with the managers approval.
