It is the garden center, reimagined! We offer a greenhouse, nursery, café and coffee shop, event space, and farmer's market. It's where plants, food and farms connect. Educational classes promoting local agriculture and sustainability as well as private events are also offered.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Leadership: Lead, manage, and hold accountable the site team to ensure the successful execution of operational plans and goals. Foster a positive and inclusive work environment that promotes open communication, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Budget/P&L: Accountable for the department's Profit & Loss (P&L) performance by managing the budget, tracking expenses, and ensuring cost-effective operations.
  • Greenhouse Management: Oversee all facets of greenhouse operations, including monitoring plant health, facility maintenance, and key performance metrics.
  • Inventory Management: Manage inventory by tracking stock levels, forecast needs, and optimize product availability to minimize waste.
  • Safe Workplace: Promote and maintain a safe work environment and ensure staff training on safety protocols.

Essential Job Duties:
  • Hold regular team meetings to discuss performance, goals, and challenges
  • Analyze market trends to inform inventory decisions and boost sales
  • Procure products based on demand and market analysis, implement production plans annually for onsite growing
  • Monitor sales metrics and ensure Revenue and Gross Margin, including Shrink, targets are met
  • Conduct regular budget analysis to uncover cost-saving opportunities
  • Implement effective product placement strategies and signage
  • Collaborate with Marketing to enhance promotional efforts and campaigns
  • Maintain the Greenhouse facility, plant health measures, and ensure safe working conditions
  • Lead cross-departmental collaboration for seamless operations
  • Travel to trade shows and events as required
  • Other job duties as assigned

  • Required: Strong computer skills, including advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and familiarity with inventory systems

Maintain compliance with USDA organic standards, food safety protocols, and worker safety guidelines. Create and maintain detailed records for crop inputs, planting/harvest dates, yields, fertility plans, and supply usage. Order and track seeds, tools, equipment, and supplies; maintain farm inventory and sourcing schedules. Ensure proper sanitation and handling practices for post-harvest crops. Perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance of tools, irrigation systems, and machinery. Develop SOPs, field maps, workflows, and protocols that enhance efficiency and ensure consistency. Contribute to seasonal planning, long-term site development, and infrastructure projects.
**Team Management and Training:**
+ Supervise seasonal farm staff, volunteers, and youth program participants. Provide hands-on training in organic growing practices, tool usage, food safety, and farm tasks. Help onboard new staff and ensure adherence to safety protocols and standard procedures. Collaborate with instructors and program coordinators on curriculum delivery for internships, field classes, and the Taste of the Trades youth program.
**Education, Tours, and Event Support:**
+ Host tours and engage with campus visitors, including VIP guests, donors, and external partners. Represent FoodLab at university events, conferences, and outreach programs. Support event logistics including farm prep, signage, produce displays, and vendor/staff coordination. Collaborate with the Executive Director to develop farm-based demonstration projects and workshops. Provide produce and visual resources for student projects, public talks, and exhibitions
**Administrative, Budget, and Reporting:**
+ Monitor and manage field operations budget in coordination with the Executive Director. Submit records and reports related to field trials, budgets, or grant-funded initiatives. Support internal reporting by providing crop records, staff time logs, and program data. Participate in staff meetings and contribute to FoodLab's overall strategy and mission.

We are looking for a friendly and knowledgeable person to manage our Fair Oaks greenhouse full time. The ideal candidate must have plant identification knowledge and demand forecasting/ordering experience.

Some of the primary responsibilities include:
  • Greeting customers as they come into the greenhouse, learning what types of plants they are looking for, and making suggestions based on their particular environment.
  • Forecasting inventory demand to ensure adequate levels of stock.
  • Maintaining relationships with our suppliers and placing orders.
  • Supervising greenhouse staff.
  • Planning and implementing greenhouse plant displays, working with the merchandising team.
  • Answering questions that customers may have and guiding them on proper care and watering procedures.
  • Facilitating the sales process and helping coordinate deliveries or plantings.
  • Answering customer phone calls and emails.
  • Watering plants and making sure that the nursery is neat and clean.
  • Communicating with fellow sales people, cashiers, loaders and phone operators as part of a team to ensure complete customer service and satisfaction.

While the primary need of this position is for our greenhouse department, you will need to be familiar with all of the different types of plants that we carry in the nursery, including trees, shrubs, annuals and perennials, and the different types of gardening supplies that we carry, such as soils, mulches and fertilizers.

The ideal candidate must possess the following:
  • Plant identification knowledge, including familiarity with fertilizer, potting mediums, common diseases and treatment recommendations.
  • Experience with demand forecasting, ordering and inventory management.
  • Experience with managing and maintaining the current and new inventory of indoor plants.
  • Experience managing a retail team.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Positive, respectful, can-do attitude.
  • Ability to work individually without close supervision and in a team environment.
  • Ability to stand or be physically active for hours at a time, including lifting and moving plants.
  • Willingness to work outdoors, rain or shine.

Job Summary:

The General Manager plans, directs, and coordinates the ongoing operations of the greenhouse.   • Identify training needs and ensures proper training is developed and provided.
  • Mitigate risks associated with warehouse and greenhouse operations and ensure it is regularly and effectively maintained.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory and company standards, including Occupational Health & Safety, Food Safety, and HACCP.
  • In collaboration with Human Resources, maintain employee relations and corrective counseling process.

  • Source and hire outside contractors as required to maintain the facility.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Operational Management, or a related field is required; a Master's degree is preferred. Alternatively, candidates with 10 years of relevant experience in a similar leadership role may also be considered.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in a greenhouse environment, manufacturing, or food processing environment.
  • Knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices, Health and Safety, Food Safety, HACCP and the PrimusGFS Program
  • Experience with the PRIVA greenhouse climate control system is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience in organizational effectiveness and operations management implementing best practices
  • Strong background in strategic planning, resource allocation, and operations management.
  • Commitment to high professional ethical standards; an influential leader able to motivate with excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative management style; exceptional verbal and written communication skills
