Oversight and maintenance of an enterprise-wide Safety Management System will be a core responsibility, along with oversight of safety programs in manufacturing, air operations, flight test, and research and development.

Responsibilities- Act as Jobys chief safety champion model and promote an organizational culture that fosters safety practices through effective leadership
- Manage an enterprise-wide safety management system (SMS), including management of the FAA Part 135, Part 145, Part 141, and OEM SMS programs under the FAA Part 5 SMS program.
- Particulate regularly in technical safety reviews, flight readiness reviews and safety review boards, providing technical safety perspective and insights.
- Lead the development and standardization of procedures, risk assessments, proactive safety reporting, and emergency response, involving air operations, flight test, research and development, manufacturing, and other areas across the company,
- Present Joby's safety posture and current status to the Executive Leadership and Board of Directors on a regular basis.
- Interface with company leadership, employees, contractors, FAA, OSHA, and other regulators to ensure a safe, compliant, and successful experience for everyone at Joby
- Build strong working relationships across the Joby organization to reinforce a strong safety and compliance culture
- Oversee cross-functional and volunteer teams, including safety team, first responders, incident review board, and others as required
- Develop and oversee occupational health programs
- Recommend, develop and implement appropriate safety training opportunities for personnel
- Lead a team that provides written and oral safety communication to the company, including safety surveys, newsletters, and overall safety promotion.
- Ensure compliance with safety and security standards and internal processes and procedures

- 10+ years of safety experience, 5+ years of experience in a leadership role
- Bachelors degree with a concentration in systems engineering, system safety, aeronautical engineering, aeronautical technology, or a related field Masters degree is a plus
- Extensive knowledge of aviation safety standards, safe operating practices, emergency response procedures, and FAA regulations
- Operational leadership with the ability to perform in a demanding environment with rapidly changing priorities
- Ability to identify safety hazards and promote the reduction and elimination of hazardous and potentially hazardous conditions
- Excellent presentation, interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills are an absolute must
- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with minimal to no oversight
- Ability to be flexible, work under pressure, multitask, and make critical decisions in a fast-paced environment
- Willingness to be available 24/7 as needed
- Prior experience working in safety at an aircraft manufacturer

- Pilots license and/or A&P

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $170,300 - $290,000 per year salary. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

About The Role
The Head of Safety will lead the overall safety strategy, governance, and execution for our autonomous vehicle programs. You will ensure that our products meet or exceed industry safety standards, comply with applicable regulations, and maintain public trust. You will oversee the development and execution of safety cases, risk assessments, and validation strategies, guiding multidisciplinary teams across engineering, testing, operations, and compliance.
At Applied Intuition, you will:
- Define and own end-to-end safety vision, goals, and metrics for autonomous driving systems across the company
- Develop and maintain the Safety Management System (SMS) in line with ISO 26262, ISO 21448 (SOTIF), UL 4600, and other relevant standards
- Chair the Safety Board and ensure executive alignment on safety-related decisions
- Serve as the primary safety liaison with regulators, certification bodies, and industry consortiums
- Lead the creation, maintenance, and approval of the Safety Case for autonomous systems, including argumentation, evidence, and traceability and ensure all required areas
- Foster a culture of safety as a core value across the organization

- Proven leadership in system safety and its frameworks in fast-paced, innovative environments

Applied Intuition pay ranges reflect the minimum and maximum intended target base salary for new hire salaries for the position. About The Team
The Safety Office is a key part of our Public Trust organization that has independence from our technology development and business operational functions. About The Work

- Expertise in safety engineering, preferably in a high-tech environment in transportation, with experience in frontier technology and AI/ML development.
- Technical experience, preferably with hands-on experience working in SW, HW and Operations;

OverviewNuro is looking for an experienced safety leader to enhance safety in the design, testing, and operation of our autonomous vehicle products. The successful candidate will lead our Safety Office, work with the Safety Committee to define safety strategies, and collaborate with managers and safety engineers across the company to implement safety initiatives.
Responsibilities- Lead the Office of Safety within Public Trust.
- Direct efforts of the executive Safety Committee to articulate and implement safety vision and strategy.
- Prepare and review Safety Cases for our products, ensuring consistency and quality across technical and operational functions.
- Serve as Nuros SMS Executive, implementing Safety Management Systems throughout the organization.
- Work with managers and safety engineers to ensure safety strategy is executed effectively.
- Review Safety Case components, including Verification & Validation, prior to company-wide Safety Case preparation.
- Establish training and safety education requirements for safety responsible engineers and staff.
- Participate in cross-functional safety activities related to product development, validation, and operation.
- Contribute to emergency planning and response efforts.
- Monitor emerging safety and autonomy issues, providing guidance on standards and regulations.
- Represent Nuro in industry dialogues, regulatory discussions, and media interactions on safety matters.
