This position is responsible for planning, organizing, directing and coordination of all safety and environmental programs and activities at the facility and also for maintaining OSHA log and all workers’ compensation activities. This position interfaces with site personnel, vendors and regulatory agencies to ensure facility is 100 percent compliant and inspection ready with OSHA, EPA, IEPA, and DOT requirements at all times.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:- Responsible for maintaining OSHA compliance at facility which includes planning, scheduling and implementing necessary programs and training. Development and maintenance of safety procedures, training documentation and other related information. Represents facility in working with OSHA. Maintain environmental, health and safety assigned programs; including a variety of software applications.
- Review and update emergency evacuation routes and conduct preparedness drills for the entire plant
- High emphasis on accident prevention and behavior based safety programs. Develops JSAs and safe operation procedures for all processing equipment. Develops, implements, and monitors all training aspects for the facility including food safety, GMPs and safety training programs. Conducts ergonomic assesstments and works to reduce ergonomic issues
- Updates permit activity such as storm water permits, air quality permits, wastewater permits and others. Maintains the facility Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) and Spill Prevention Control Countermeasures (SPCC) Plan to include sampling as required. Knowledgeable in wastewater pre-treatment activities
- Responsible for maintaining OSHA 300 logs. Supports and coordinates all activities related to industrial clinic and initial reporting of workers’ compensation claims. Works in conjunction with HR on claim management
- Responsible for EPA form completion and filing. Maintains DMRs, Tier II forms, Form R, medical waste, and other miscellaneous documents. Proper management of documents for EPA inspections/audits. Responsible for maintaining environmental database
- Schedules and conducts monthly safety meetings with safety committee. Facilitates the activities of the safety committee. Documents safety meeting minutes and distributes to all management personnel, coupled with resolutions and feasibility of solutions requested. Ensures Contractor Safety Management program is effectively implemented
- Develops and submits Request for Expenditures (RFE) for EHS projects. Reviews all RFEs for possible EHS impacts. PM for capital projects involved with safety and/or environmental concerns
- Maintains facility SDS / GHS information. Update, monitor and integrate any necessary information into the 3E Online program. Conduct monthly audits of potentially hazardous materials. Works closely with the property insurance carrier to meet policy requirements. Serves as plant representative for insurance activities
- Stays current with new safety/environmental mandates, laws and regulations. Develops new safety and environmental policies for the facility as situations present themselves. Responsible for following all food safety policies, procedures and regulatory criteria including the current SQF code, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), and the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and associated preventive controls
- Other duties as assigned; travel may be required
- Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Engineering, Industrial Management or equivalent experience
- 5 years of experience in Environmental Health and Safety, Engineering, Industrial Management
- Experience with behavior based safety programs required
- Competent and knowledgeable in OSHA, EPA and other regulatory requirements in a manufacturing setting. Knowledgeable in the principles of safety, workers' compensation along with pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations. Skilled in risk assessment and analysis of potential hazards
- Excellent written and verbal skills coupled with good computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Must be comfortable speaking to large groups of people and facilitating meetings
- Must be people oriented and have the ability to interface with employees at all levels of the organization

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Health and Safety
- Perform boots on the ground safety oversight by identifying and correcting work place hazards and unsafe conditions
- Monitor employee exposure to job and chemical hazards as regulated by OSHA permissible exposure limits
- Assist in the implementation and compliance of site-specific safety policies
- Assist in the creation of job hazard analysis an personal protective equipment (PPE) assessments
- Perform department specific safety surveys using inspection forms to ensure employees are utilizing safe work practices such as utilizing proper PPE, minimizing trip hazards, wearing fall protection etc.
- Ensure notification and corrective actions are put in place when any unsafe condition is presented or found throughout the site

- Monitor and manage levels of hazardous waste at each department's satellite accumulation area

- Accurately record and maintain 90-day hazardous waste drum logs, hazardous waste sign in sheets, VOC solvent usage logs
- Accurately perform all required hazardous waste and hazardous material storage area inspections
- Assist in waste shipments with the waste disposal contractor.
- Perform weekly storm water inspections per the SWPPP
- Perform tasks related to spill response/prevention
- Implement the spill prevention countermeasures and control plan (SPCC) throughout the facility.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalency certificate
- 2+ years of experience implementing and overseeing aspects related to an environmental, health and safety program

- Experience in performing boots on the ground safety oversight

This position is located at the Bradenton, FL, Corrugated Container facility.
How You Will Impact Smurfit WestRock:
* Collaborate with safety and environmental teams, as well as business leaders, to foster a proactive safety and environmental culture
* Implement the companyu2019s Environmental and Safety Excellence programs:
* Safety programs include, but are not limited to, pedestrian traffic, power industrial trucks/mobile equipment, lock-out/tag-out (LOTO), machine guarding, working from heights, ergonomics, material handling/dock safety, job safe planning, electrical safety, contractor safety, walking/working surfaces, confined spaces, hot work, line and equipment opening (LEO), and hazardous communication.
* Environmental programs encompass new chemical approvals, air emissions, stormwater management, wastewater processing, spill prevention and countermeasures, solid/hazardous waste management, and oversight of environmental permits and plans.
* Conduct thorough investigations in response to EHS incidents, including using human and organizational performance approaches
* Organize employee safety and environmental engagement initiatives, including leading the site's safety, environmental, or EHS team.
* Perform safety and environmental risk assessments and develop site-specific action plans to mitigate risks
* Develop comprehensive training plans for safety and environmental awareness, regulatory compliance, and other relevant topics
* Partner with the local leadership team to establish specific safety and environmental KPIs and create action plans to achieve those objectives
* Ensure timely performance of EHS testing, monitoring, training, and submission of required internal and external reports
* Execute or coordinate site safety and environmental inspections
* Actively manage the facility's EHS compliance task calendars
* Collaborate with site leadership to ensure prompt closure of findings from corporate internal environmental and safety audits
* Routinely assess safety and environmental performance on the manufacturing floor and audit processes and site conditions
* Serve as a liaison with agencies such as OSHA and state/local environmental entities
* Evaluate operational changes and capital projects to identify and plan for EHS program impacts
What You Need to Succeed:
* Bachelor's degree in safety, environmental science, engineering, or equivalent - Required
* 2+ years of experience managing a safety program within a manufacturing facility - Required
* Strong organizational skills, prioritization abilities, and capacity to manage multiple tasks concurrently
* Excellent written and oral communication skills
* Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and engage others to comply with EHS policies and standards
* Extensive knowledge of EHS standards, methodologies, and regulations, including OSHA, EPA, local and state environmental regulations, ANSI, and NFPA
* Proven track record of critical thinking and problem-solving
* Ability to exercise professional judgment in making quick decisions under stressful and time-sensitive conditions
