Alameda Health System is hiring! The Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of environmental health, occupational safety, and regulatory compliance programs across Alameda Health System. This role ensures system-wide adherence to federal, state, and local regulations-including Cal/OSHA-and accreditation standards such as those from The Joint Commission and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Working collaboratively with hospital administrators, clinical leaders, facilities management, and regulatory agencies, the Director leads initiatives to reduce workplace hazards, prevent unsafe practices, and foster a culture of safety, accountability, and sustainability. The position is responsible for developing data-driven safety strategies, overseeing regulatory programs, and ensuring that all facilities within the healthcare system are aligned with best practices in environmental and occupational safety.
This position is part of the Alameda Health System Support Services team and plays a critical role in advancing organizational goals related to staff safety, patient care quality, and environmental stewardship.

Develops, implements, and standardizes employee health and safety policies and procedures in alignment with federal, state, and local regulations, including Cal/OSHA, EPA, DOT, CMS, and Joint Commission requirements.
+ Provides strategic direction for environmental health and safety (EHS) programs across the healthcare system, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and regulatory compliance.
+ Leads injury and illness prevention initiatives, conducts trend analysis, and oversees the development of corrective actions to reduce risk and promote a safe work environment.
+ Oversees system-wide risk reduction and environmental compliance programs, including hazardous materials management, waste disposal, indoor air quality, infection control support, and emergency preparedness.
+ Partners with leaders across departments-such as Facilities, HR, Infection Prevention, and Clinical Operations-to integrate safety standards into daily operations and strategic initiatives.
+ Chairs the Environment of Care and Workplace Violence Committees; reports into other key governance bodies, including the Quality and Safety Committee.

**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS** :
+ Minimum Required Education: Bachelor's degree in one of the following fields: Environmental Health, Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Environmental Science, Safety Engineering, Related scientific or technical field
+ Preferred Education: Master's degree in one of the following: Public Health (MPH) with a focus on Environmental or Occupational Health, Environmental Health or Safety Management, Industrial Hygiene, Healthcare Administration (with EHS focus), Environmental Engineering, Risk Management.
+ Required Experience: Minimum of 8 to 10 years of progressive leadership experience in Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), with a strong background in healthcare or hospital system environments. Must include demonstrated experience in emergency and disaster planning, as well as coordination and compliance with Environment of Care standards. A deep understanding of healthcare-specific regulatory requirements, risk management, and safety practices is essential.

+ Drives compliance by: actively contributing to the development of policies and procedures to ensure developing, implementing, and overseeing strategies and programs to enable compliance with applicable federal, state, and local Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) regulatory requirements, and organizational EH&S and Workplace Safety (WPS) policies and standards; leading interactions and collaborating on high-impact projects with all EH&S regulatory, accreditation, and grant agency inspections and surveys (e.g., The Joint Commission (TJC), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Division of Occupational Health and Safety (DOHS), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), State Fire Marshall, state and public health county inspections); driving a culture of compliance, holding teams accountable for compliance with, and contributing to Kaiser Permanentes Policies and Procedures and Principles of Responsibilities as they relate to Environmental Health and Safety; developing best practices for the completion and submission of regulatory reports within appropriate time frames; championing forward-thinking solutions to drive strategic plans for process improvements in compliance; and communicating to senior leadership and influencing adoption of regulatory compliance matters and their impact on Environmental Health and Safety.

+ Directs Health and Safety programs by: executing on strategic, long-term goals for comprehensive environmental health and safety programs across the market; executing plans for conducting comprehensive assessments and analyses to evaluate health and safety program(s) in alignment with long-term goals, and holding teams accountable for its implementation; and shaping Health and Safety programs based on analyses, observations, industry best practices, and strategic organizational goals.

+ Champions high-quality service by: leveraging advanced strategies to develop guidelines for the responses to and resolution of complaints and issues in alignment with organizational goals and minimization of liability and risk; and initiating collaboration with local administration, managers, physicians, and staff on EH&S and WPS matters (e.g., environmental management, industrial hygiene, safety).

Minimum Qualifications:
+ Minimum seven (7) years of experience in a leadership role with direct reports.
+ Bachelors degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Natural Science, Engineering, Emergency Management, or related field AND Minimum eight (8) years of experience in environmental health and safety, risk management, or directly related field OR Minimum eleven (11) years of experience in environmental health and safety, risk management, or a directly related field.
+ Safety Professional Certificate within 24 months of hire OR Health Safety Professional Certificate within 24 months of hire OR Industrial Hygienist Certificate within 24 months of hire
