Job Description: Responsible for performing routine and advanced histology techniques, utilizing procedures varying in complexity, to prepare pathology and cytology specimens, as defined by CLIA, for pathologist and cytotechnologist interpretation. Performs routine and advanced maintenance on all instrumentation and can actively troubleshoot instrument issues. Comprehension of regulatory requirements and may provide technical oversight of IHC/ISH which includes test validation and development of new technologies. Key Responsibilities:

• Routine and special staining procedures
• Correctly identifies, accessions, labels, prepares, and processes all pathology specimens in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures
• Performs advanced histochemistry and immunohistochemistry protocols and has advanced knowledge of technique
• Mohs and routine frozen sections as required in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of pathologic conditions on patients of all ages
• Assists staff pathologists in the grossing laboratory
• Participation in Quality Assurance, Quality Control monitoring, and instrument maintenance
• Participates in training new employees, students, and other personnel as appropriate training
• Serves on committees and teams as needed or assigned, actively participating in meetings and completing tasks or assignments
• Supports and implements patient safety and other safety practices as appropriate

Educational Requirements

• Graduate of an associate degree in Histotechnician

• Baccalaureate degree from and accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both)

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in grossing of routine biopsy specimens received from submitting locations as allowed by CLIA and other regulatory agencies

**Job Summary**
The Histology Technologist processes and prepares histological specimens for diagnostic evaluation. **Essential Functions**
+ Prepares and processes tissue specimens for microscopic examination by embedding, sectioning, and staining using appropriate histological techniques.
+ Operates and maintains complex laboratory equipment and instruments used for histology procedures.
+ Performs special stains and immunohistochemical testing as required for diagnostic purposes.
+ Reviews stained slides and controls for accuracy and quality; adjusts procedures as needed.
+ Performs data entry and labeling using the laboratory information system (LIS).
+ Follows laboratory protocols and maintains required documentation for quality assurance and regulatory compliance.
+ Maintains inventory, orders supplies, and ensures proper storage and disposal of specimens and biological waste.

**Qualifications**

+ Process human tissue and body fluid specimens in preparation for microscopic exam
+ Perform technical duties related to the production of histopathological slides of surgical specimens
+ Section the embedded tissue, using a microtome and mount the section properly on a microscope slide
+ Perform various immunohistochemical tests on formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue sections
+ Process mounted sections through routine and special staining procedures
+ Properly orient and embed surgical tissue specimens
+ Prepare the stains and reagents needed for special procedures
+ Report accurate and timely test results in order to deliver quality patient care
+ Operate and maintain manual and automated instruments
+ Perform and document equipment maintenance as needed
+ Record equipment log data in an accurate and timely manner
+ Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures
+ Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies
+ Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, analysis and reporting
+ Document problems that may affect test performance and perform corrective actions as needed
**Requirements**
+ Bachelor's degree in Histology; no experience required OR
+ Bachelor's degree in a Chemical or Biological science plus 1 year of experience (within the past 5 years) or completion of a Histology program (min 9 months)
+ Histology and/or ASCP certifications are preferred
+ Previous experience in histology is preferred but not required
+ Familiarity with routine histology procedures and equipment
+ Immunohistochemistry experience is a plus
+ Comfortability embedding both large and small specimens
+ Ability to accurately read all labels and documents
+ Highly organized with a strong attention to detail
+ Experience working in a high volume laboratory environment is desirable
+ Familiarity with laboratory SOPs and safety protocols
+ Must be able to pass a standardized color vision screen
