Position Summary:

The Histotechnologist plays a critical role in the field of medical laboratory science by preparing tissue specimens for microscopic examination. Working directly under the supervision of the Director of Laboratory Operations and Director of Pathology, the Histotechnologist is responsible for preparing, processing, staining, and mounting tissue specimens for review by the pathologist, ensuring accurate and timely processing and handling of specimens.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Responsible for tissue specimen processing by accessioning, grossing, embedding, microtomy, performing H&E and Papanicolaou staining, and coverslipping of all surgical/cytologic specimen slides for microscopic analysis.
Loading the blocks on the processor, ensuring quality and timeliness of production.
Modify and validate procedures and methodologies for immunohistochemistry, special staining, and other related staining.
Organize cases by matching slides with appropriate paperwork and/or laying slides out in slide folders.
Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, such as microtomes, tissue processors, embedding machines, and automated strainers, as well as troubleshooting equipment and automated instrumentation within the laboratory.
Assists supervisor in meeting department regulatory agency requirements (CAP, CLIA, etc.).
Implement and adhere to quality control measures to maintain the accuracy and reliability of laboratory results. Recognize and address any deviations from established protocols.
Maintain meticulous records of specimens, procedures, and results. Ensure proper labeling, tracking, and documentation of samples.
Maintain supplies and other inventory.

Qualifications:

Associate degree and/or completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) Accredited Certificate Program is required and will be verified prior to employment.
HT or HTL certification is required and will be verified prior to employment.
Minimum of three years’ Histology experience.
Immunohistochemistry experience required. Qualification in Immunohistochemistry strongly desired.

2. Prepare tissue and produce microscopic slides using a wide variety of tissue techniques (i.e., fixation, embedding, sectioning and standard staining) to produce accurate reproducible results to meet the needs of patients as requested by the physicians.

3. Operate basic and advanced laboratory equipment/instruments (e.g., cryostats, tissue processors, microtomes, knife sharpeners, slide stainers, embedding centers, distillation system, pH meters, special stain units, IHC instrumentation) consistent with manufacturers’ instruction manuals, and with laboratory SOP. Perform quality assurance, quality control, and required equipment maintenance and troubleshooting procedures, calibration and quality control on instruments.

4. Record all work, (e.g., blocks cut, special stains, slides, immunoperoxidase slides, frozen section slides, immunofluorescent slides, re-cut slides, autopsy and surgical slides, decals, conference, teaching and research),

5. Maintain effective communication with laboratory sections, other hospital departments and public, as necessary to assure dissemination of information and the identification/resolution of problems.

6. Participate in the educational endeavors of the institution to meet the current and future needs of the department. Participate as required, in the education of medical students, residents, PA students, School of Medicine students, MLS and Histotechnology students and technicians.

7. Recognize errors, medical and technical problems and utilize expertise to perform minor and major troubleshooting and appropriate and timely problem resolution. Provide input for development of quality assurance and quality control procedures.

8. Participate in planning and implementing change and maintaining and improving productivity through attendance and participation in tech meetings, projects, and discussions with supervisor.

Additional Job Description:

The successful applicant will be working inside Ruby's Histology laboratory located within the Health Science Center. They will work in conjunction with other Histotechnologists and under the supervision of the Histology supervisor and the Anatomic Pathology manager. They will be required to rotate duties and responsibilities while working within the Histology laboratory. In addition, the successful candidate will be required to work flexible shifts starting as early 3am and as late as 5pm. The successful candidate must follow and adhere to standard operating procedures and polices within the department. The candidate should have a general knowledge of Histology practices and demonstrate the ability to troubleshoot, multitask, and pay close attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.

Apply Today!Job Summary and QualificationsAs a Histotechnologist, you will perform all functions related to preparation of specimens for pathologist examination, including gross examination, preparation and cutting of blocks, and preparation and staining of slides. You will ensure the specimens taken are acceptable and sustainable in the required observation and diagnosis by the Pathologist. You will also be responsible for safety, maintenance, and quality control activities.You will accession specimens with proper patient information, and log specimens accurately with patient data, specimen types and sourcesYou will process, embed, cut, mount and stain specimensYou will accurately file slides, cassettes and tissue blocksYou will prepare, label, and observe expiration dates on solutions and reagentsYou will assist with bone marrow aspirations and biopsies, fine needle aspirations, and renal biopsiesYou will assist with lab maintenance to include cleaning, restocking, preventative maintenance of equipment, instrument performance checks, and specimen discardingWhat qualifications you will need:Experience1 year of previous experience as a HistotechnologistEducationAssociate’s degree in Histology or Applied ScienceGraduate of an accredited school or program of Histology or PathologyLicenses and CertificationsHistotechnician (HT) certification or Histotechnologist (HTL) certification through the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) – preferredSt. David's South Austin Medical Center, which is part of St. David's HealthCare. Job Summary:

  • Perform Mohs lab procedures outlined in procedure manual, working in direct contact with Mohs Surgeon.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Completing minimum 10 Mohs cases a day with satisfactory quality.
  • Overseeing all patient logs and maintaining CLIA requirements, performs technical histology tasks and
  • procedures to include tissue processing, tissue embedding, microtomy, staining, immunohistochemistry,
  • accessioning, equipment preventive maintenance, quality control, inventory, supply ordering, data
  • gathering/reports, slide and block filing/retrieval and other histology related duties.
  • Ability to troubleshoot stainer, cryostat, and other instruments. Knowledge of reagent use, storage and
  • safe handling as well as lab standards by OSHA and CLIA.
  • Performs daily cleaning of lab and equipment.

Requirements:

Experience: No less than 1 year

Performance Requirements: Ability to Gross, Embed, Cut, Hand Stain H&E, Coverslip. Knowledge of IHC staining

for Melanoma

Knowledge: Cytology, microscopy, Stain Protocol, Anatomy, Setting up Mohs lab, Mohs mapping techniques, CLIA

regulations

Skills: Delegation of responsibility, create workflow, Training, Full understanding of Mohs surgical procedure

Abilities: Punctual, flexible hours, equipment maintenance

Equipment Operated: Cryostat, standard office equipment including computers, fax machines, copiers, printers,

telephones, etc.

* The histotechnologist will be covering grossing. The hours will be the night shift 10pm-7pm Sunday -Thursday

Education:

High School Diploma required

Advanced degree preferred

Board certified ASCP Histotechnologist certificate preferred

Work Environment:

Medical office, well lit, well ventilated.

Work may be stressful due to continual interaction with others.

Evening Hours

Physical Requirements: Must possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the tasks normally

associated with an Administrators including walking, bending, standing, reaching, and sitting. Ability to lift

20 lbs.
