The Boyce Thompson Arboretum is seeking a Horticulture Manager . This position directly manages the horticulture and gardener staff in a 372-acre facility that has a stunning natural landscape. The Horticulture Manager provides leadership to staff and volunteers on the overall plant health, maintenance of various planned gardens, and participation in collection planning and priorities. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable about arid landscapes, tree care and maintenance, desert ecology, horticulture design principles, greenhouse and propagation best practices. A love of desert landscapes and wildlife is a must.
RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Provide direction and leadership on best horticulture and arborist practices in the overall management of the Arboretum including soil nutrition strategies that promote sustainable gardening practices, best practices for tree management and integrated pest management
- Develop and oversee the Horticulture Department budget, including reporting of grant and donor-restricted funds.
- Directly supervise and provide leadership, management, and oversight for the day-to-day activities of the Horticulture staff, including hiring, training, goal setting and appraisals/reviews.
- Provide direction and planning for seasonal displays and collaborate with various departments to implement events that affect the gardens.
- Collaborate with propagation/retail nursery team on planning for garden needs and research priorities.
- Participate in collection planning and developing research priorities in collaboration with the Collections Committee, Plant Collections Manager and Executive Director.
- Work collaboratively with the Head Ranger/Safety Officer to maintain safe work protocols that meet OSHA requirements.
- Participate in fund-raising and grant-writing activities that benefit Horticulture programs in collaboration with the Development Department.
- Provide expertise on arid plants and landscapes and share that knowledge and skill through a variety of forms including but not limited to public and visitor engagement, staff mentorship, professional audiences, donors and public engagement.
- Work collaboratively with the Volunteer and Visitor Engagement Coordinator to develop long-term productive relationships with the Master Gardner program and Arboretum volunteers.
- Develop, maintain, and promote positive and professional relationships with internal staff, volunteers, members, vendors, contractors, media, and the general public.
- Provide leadership and engagement in the larger public garden community and work collaboratively on shared goals and projects.
- Participate in strategic and capital planning as a member of the Executive Team.
- Serve as Manager on Duty.

Requirements
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelors degree in botany, horticulture, environmental studies, or related field required
- Minimum of three (3) years managing and supervising horticultural staff. Experience in a public garden preferred.
- Experience or certification in forestry and arborist practices preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in arid and desert plant ecology and landscapes.
- Demonstrated knowledge of horticulture and public garden best practices and clear understanding of aesthetics as they apply to a natural setting.
- Experience successfully managing and completing multiple active projects while staying within budgetary constraints and within specified timelines.
- Strong management and leadership skills with a desire and ability to succeed in a collaborative and diverse environment.

- Must be able to work at least one weekend, day and occasional evenings. The shift starts one hour before opening. In the summer months the shift starts at 5 am.
- Must be able to do basic office tasks such as typing, writing, using a computer and other electronic equipment.
- Ability to lift and move 50 lbs. and traverse uneven terrain and hiking conditions.
- Must be able to stand, walk on uneven terrain, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop or kneel, talk, and hear, and use fingers and hands to feel objects, tools or controls.

Under the direction of the Senior Manager, Horticulture the Manager, Horticulture is responsible for the strategic oversight, maintenance, and enhancement of the resort's exterior grounds, landscaping, seasonal decor, and floral displays, ensuring an aesthetically pleasing and safe environment. Develop and execute plans for landscape sustainability, seasonal transformations, and exterior aesthetics, maintenance and repairs, while maintaining high standards of guest experience in a hospitality-driven setting.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Leads the planning, design, and execution of landscape maintenance, seasonal decor, and floral installations, ensuring proper preventative maintenance of all exterior grounds, including parking areas, pathways, and resort perimeters. Implement sustainable horticulture practices that align with environmental and brand guidelines, conduct regular inspections to ensure adherence to safety and aesthetic standards, and manage and upkeep all seasonal and promotional displays throughout the resort.
2. Manages budgets for landscape projects, groundskeeping, exterior maintenance, seasonal decor, and floral arrangements while optimizing resources. Ensure cost-effective procurement and inventory control of plants, materials, and decor elements. Maintain financial records and report on expenditures, justifying budget needs
3. Ensures all horticulture and exterior maintenance work complies with OSHA, ADA, and resort brand standards. Communicate effectively with leadership, vendors, and team members to ensure seamless execution of projects. Maintain accurate records of maintenance schedules, project progress, and compliance adherence.
4. Communicates important matters involving personnel, facilities, exterior maintenance, and groundskeeping to the Horticulture Senior Manager in a timely manner. Collaborate with resort management on special events requiring horticulture and seasonal decor. Stay updated on industry trends in horticulture, exterior decor, and sustainable landscaping. Handle emergency situations such as storm damage or urgent repairs.
5. Performs other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning reviewing and directing work; evaluating and appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Makes hiring decisions and designs individual development plans with succession planning in mind for all key roles.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

**JOB RESPONSIBILITIES**
+ Perform manual labor in the care and growth of plugs and bulbs into botanicals in preparations for seasonal plantings. Label seedlings/plants for accurate identification of floral type and color, waters, and fertilizes. Propagates plants through life cycle transferring to appropriate container size, removing damages or unsightly foliage, and keeping plantings free from disease and insects, and oriented to proper light. Maintains a clean and orderly workspace.
+ Loads vehicles with plantings, tools, dirt, and fertilizer for plantings. Review planting requests and delivers materials to appropriate location. Drives cautiously to prevent damage to surroundings; may adjust deliveries to respect burials and visitors. Washes and maintains vehicles in working order; identifies issues to management
+ Till and prepare soil for seasonal botanical plantings and removes prior plantings. Manually digs trenches or holes for plantings. Installs plantings or bulbs at designated gravesite or area. Maintains equipment and tools.
+ Maintains, prunes, and deadheads botanicals as needed to promote flowering and appearance. May pull and remove weeds. May lay sod.
+ Seasonally apply or remove winter grave blankets.
**MINIMUM** **Requirements**
Education
+ High School Diploma or equivalent required
Experience
+ Professional or personal experience in floriculture, horticulture, and/or design is desired but not required
Ability
+ Operate company owned four-wheeled vehicles to transport plants, dirt, and tools.

**Required Qualifications:**
