Detailed Description:
The HVAC/Refrigeration System Mechanic 1 performs skilled level work but not at the journey-level required to maintain HVAC/Refrigeration systems and equipment. Under the guidance of the HVAC/Refrigeration System Mechanic 2, diagnose, repairs and replaces electrical and mechanical components and controls to maintain peak operating efficiency and reduce energy consumption; performs preventative and predictive maintenance inspections and adjustments to maximize equipment system life-cycle.
Further, this position was developed to better serve the University by providing additional opportunity to staffs that have demonstrated an interest and aptitude in the field of work; but typically for those individuals who have not yet achieved journey-level status.
The successful applicant(s) are expected to continue making progress at improving their job skills and increasing technical knowledge.
Acceptance of an applicant into the position will require the successful completion of on-the-job training, successful completion of technical training coursework taken by the employee outside of the course of employment with the University, and a satisfactory work performance assessment to continue in the position.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs skilled level tasks in one or more of the following areas related to mechanical, electrical, HVAC and refrigeration trades to operate, maintain, troubleshoot and repair equipment;
- Submits reports, orally or in writing of progress and status as necessary to ensure proper job accounting and to identify and resolve any problems encountered that may cause delays, shut down or damage;
- Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, shop drawings, schematics, manufacturer's specifications and other reference material to determine appropriate job requirements and procedures;
- Continually expands knowledge of the trade through appropriate courses, seminars, publications and contracts with others in the trade;
- Ability to share trade knowledge with employees in areas of HVAC/Refrigeration operations and maintenance practices;
- Assists with the procurement of supplies and materials;
- As assigned, inspects work performed by outside contractors to insure conformance with University specifications;
- Maintains good working relationships with the students, faculty, staffs and vendors, adheres to all University policy and procedures
- Maintains a working knowledge of relevant codes, regulations and applies them consistently in daily activities;
- Works in a neat and orderly manner and maintains a clean work area;
- Maintains tools and equipment in good condition;
- Works from ladders and scaffolding as well as in confined spaces.
- Consistently follows and enforces safety practices appropriate to building maintenance and complies with rules and regulations established by the University and governmental agencies;
- Maintains an awareness of the typical hazards of the work place as well as the special hazards that may be encountered at any University facility location such as biohazards, low-grade radiation and chemicals known to the State of California to cause, birth defects, or other reproductive harm;
- Follows established governmental (local, state and federal) procedures for dealing with special hazards; and promptly reports any unusual conditions to the supervisor.
- Must be able to work assigned hours and may be assigned to work any shift. Employees working in this classification may be designated as essential personnel and subject to occasional overtime, callbacks and may be required to serve 24/7 on-call rotation.
- Must possess a valid California driver's license and may be required to drive University vehicles;
- Must wear a uniform prescribed and furnished by USD;
- May be assigned to work in the vicinity of laboratories where biohazards, radioactive or other potentially hazardous substances are stored or used;
- Must continually expand knowledge base in building maintenance techniques, attend assigned training;
- Must work individually or in teams coordinating assigned work with other groups and department;
- May be assigned to work at any USD facility/location;
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED and 2 years of work experience at the Maintenance Mechanic 2 level, and additional 2 years of work experience in HVAC/Refrigeration.
- Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
- Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
- General knowledge of customer service techniques; demonstrated successful customer service experience; Work experience in the HVAC/Refrigeration field; Technical Training in HVAC/R; Work experience in an institution of higher education or similar industry; HVAC automation controls training & experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge at the skilled level in one or more of the functional areas;
- Skilled in maintenance and repair procedures including preventative maintenance and troubleshooting;
- Under the guidance of the HVAC/Refrigeration System Mechanic 2, demonstrate knowledge of building HVAC/Refrigeration automation control systems, electrical circuitry and low voltage controls circuitry, both theoretical and practical application, demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and repair;
- Skilled in the use of common HVAC/R test equipment used in the industry;
- Working understanding of the refrigeration cycle, system components and controls sequence;
- Under the guidance of the HVAC/Refrigeration System Mechanic 2, demonstrate the ability and system knowledge to use a vacuum pump and gauges to re-cover and re-charge refrigeration systems with Freon, demonstrated ability to weld or braze copper, stainless steel and aluminum tubing;
- Ability to operate and maintain hand and power tools, typically used in the trade;
- Demonstrated ability to follow safe working procedures, work within the guidelines of health and safety work plans and report unsafe conditions;
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interface with faculty, administrators, staff and students; highly-skilled in customer service technique;
- Working knowledge of applicable codes and regulations; California and Federal OSHA;
- Ability to read and interpret blue prints, specifications, shop drawing, schematics manufacturer's specifications, and other reference material to determine appropriate job requirements and procedures;
- Ability to work effectively in an environment subject to frequently changing priorities;
- Physical ability to perform indicated tasks;
- Ability to operate computer for word processing, purchasing and research
- Ability and willingness to represent the university in the most positive manner;
- Ability to meet and work effectively with university constituents; learn and use operating practices of the department and the university;

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Evaluates and predicts sound levels and vibration impacts of mechanical equipment such as rooftop HVAC units, air handling units, compressors, fans, and ductwork.
- Collaborates with mechanical engineers, architects, and project managers to incorporate noise control solutions into HVAC system designs.

What Youll Do
As a Technical Support Representative, youll be the go-to expert for customers, contractors, and partners needing help with our products. Your day-to-day will include:

Engineers will apply critical thinking skills to initial planning, procurement support, plan development, design, construction and commissioning phases of projects. **APTIM expects our engineers to be creative problem solvers and actively look for the best way to support our varied Government and commercial clients.** Engineers will often work on multiple projects simultaneously and perform other duties as required. This position will require prior knowledge of the engineering and construction industry. Understanding of corporate mechanisms such as scopes of work, construction safety protocols, and experience in a professional work environment. This position immediately offers opportunities for continuous growth while solving problems in the engineering and construction industry. Engineers typically serve the projects in both the field (domestic and international assignments) and the office, as necessary.
**Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:**
+ A seasoned experienced professional with a full understanding of mechanical engineering resolving a wide range of issues in creative ways.
+ Experience in HVAC, ASHRAE, SMACNA & ACGIH Codes
+ Building Load Calculation Software Trane Trace or Carrier HAP experience
+ Duct sizing and pressure drop calculations.
+ HVAC Equipment sizing and specifications, AHU's, DX Units, Chillers, Pumping systems, Cooling Towers, Boilers and Heat exchangers.
+ Broad application of principles, theories and concepts in HVAC and mechanical engineering, plus working knowledge of other related fields
+ Work with young engineering team members providing oversight and training.
+ Provides resolution to a diverse scope and range of complex problems where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors
+ Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions
+ Development of project design basis, development of specifications, and performance of detailed engineering.
+ Ensures conformance to applicable engineering codes and standards as well as company policies and procedures.
+ May perform in project leadership role and/or may supervise the activities of lower level personnel
+ Contributes to a team environment. Perform detailed technical analysis of complex project issues.
+ Break complex technical tasks into manageable subtasks.
+ Travel to site locations to provide engineering support, meetings with clients, and meetings at other company offices to support engineering efforts.
**Basic Qualifications:**
+ Requires Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering with 10+ years related experience.
+ Strong computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and technical engineering software, some CADD experience (AutoCAD, REVIT and/or MicroStation) along with good verbal and writing skills.
+ Candidates must be willing to travel for infrequent field assignments.
+ Mechanical, plumbing experience is a plus.
+ Nuclear experience is a plus.
+ Field experience is a plus.
+ Construction experience and certifications a plus.
+ Must be a US Citizen and be able to pass a background check to gain access to government facilities.
+ PE is a requirement.
+ Certified Energy Manager is a plus.
+ Ability to work independently and in a diverse team setting.
+ Willingness to work across Engineering disciplines.
+ Strong multitasking skills
+ Strong problem-solving skills

As of the date of this posting, a good faith estimate of the current pay range for this position is $130,000 - $170,000. Compensation depends on several factors including: experience, education, key skills, geographic location of the position, client requirements, external market competitiveness, and internal equity among other employees within APTIM.
