Summary:

The Learning Support Specialist is a member of our Learning and Innovation team. The Learning and Innovation team is at the forefront of developing learning experiences in a technically rich environment, contributing to many UMGC initiatives. The Learning Support Specialist is a key contributor to the team responsible for applying course updates and troubleshooting functionality issues for online courses in a higher education environment. This team member will contribute to effectively supporting and maintaining platforms and technologies that enable next-generation learning experiences. This includes but is not limited to, learning management systems, content management systems, and third-party and custom-developed learning technologies. Core skills required in this role include excellent communication, problem-solving, and the ability to learn and work across many technologies.

Please note: The core hours for this position are 11am-7pm Eastern Time. This position also requires commitment to being on call for critical issues during assigned weekends and holidays.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Process content change requests and maintain content versioning.
• Effectively address support requests related to learning technology; responsible for research and development of resolutions to new and emerging issues that require the highest level of technical expertise for the supported platforms.
• Provide high-quality written communication to collaborate professionally with customers and other departments, document ticket resolution, and contribute towards team process and product documentation repository.
• Effectively lead meetings with stakeholders to gather course updates and trouble-shooting needs.
• Generate reports for the ticketing system, learning management, and content management systems; recognize, and act on inconsistencies in data and escalate issues.
• Perform testing, analyze testing results, and report errors to appropriate teams.
• Create user stories for bugs, enhancements, or new technologies.
• Provide training and technical assistance for applicable systems or processes to customers and team members, as needed.
• Provide excellent customer service.
• Execute project plans related to learning technology and content management-related processes and initiatives.
• Manage user accounts, groups, and permissions for supported content management systems.
• Perform other job-related duties as required.

• Experience administering Learning Management Systems, preferably D2L Brightspace and/or Content Management Systems (running reports, configuring settings, testing, etc.)

• Basic knowledge of HTML, HTML5, and CSS

Job Summary

The Learning Support Specialist (LSS) supports the operation of Student Academic Support Services by providing professional tutoring services and assisting with carrying out academic support programs and services. The LSS works with SAS/Tutoring administration and staff to ensure efficient program operations, including scheduling, providing information, and taking part in outreach activities as needed. The LSS tutors are in an area of academic credentials and expertise, usually for introductory courses, in person, one-on-one or in small groups, to help students attain a deeper and more substantial command of the assigned subject matter. The LSS must be able to work with others present in a shared space. The LSS must have a strong command of the subject matter and be able to communicate it effectively to students using a variety of methods. Applications accepted in a variety of subject areas; position filled as needs arise.

Tutoring

• Supplements students' understanding and command of the course material for which students seek assistance, outside of class.
• Tutors for introductory courses in the discipline area of expertise only.
• Helps students develop and apply appropriate learning and study skills.
• Meets with students at appointed time.
• Assists with training and mentoring Peer Learning Success Leaders as needed.

• Assists with daily operations of the Tutoring Center.
• Maintains documentation of all tutoring sessions.
• Generates reports for tutoring and maintains documentation of department tutoring interactions.
• Proficiently uses and implements the College's tutoring and record-keeping software.
• Assists with SAS/Tutoring Services marketing and outreach activities.

• Maintains a thorough knowledge of course material, as well as multiple instructional methodologies, to accommodate various student learning styles.
• Attends tutor and staff training sessions.

• Fosters and maintains a safe environment of respect and welcome for faculty, staff, students, and members of the community.

• Associate's Degree, Academic or professional certification, or higher degree in academic field of expertise.
• Six (6) months of teaching, tutoring, Supplemental Instruction experience, or equivalent related learning support experience.

• State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s).

Job Summary

The Learning Support Specialist 2 (LSS2) performs the duties of a professional tutor in their area(s) of academic expertise and experience. The LSS2 works in person with students, either one-to-one or in small groups, to help them attain a deeper and more substantial command of assigned subject matter and to develop and apply effective learning and critical thinking skills. The LSS2 position requires a strong command of the subject matter, an understanding of effective learning skills, and the ability to engage actively and creatively with students using a variety of methods and tutoring strategies. The LSS2 also provides general support for tutoring programs and activities, outreach events and activities, and daily program operations, as needed. The LSS2 must be able to work with multiple students and with other tutors present in a shared space. Paid training and professional development are required and provided.
Tutoring

• Provide direct support to students in learning and understanding concepts, assignments, and material in the tutor's area(s) of expertise.
• Helps students to develop and apply effective studying, time management, and critical thinking skills.
• Meets with students by appointment and as drop-ins, depending on availability.

• Maintains documentation of all tutoring sessions.
• Proficiently uses and implements the College's tutoring and record-keeping software.
• Assists with training and mentoring of Peer Learning Success Leaders and new LSS2s. Works collaboratively with tutoring administration, staff, and tutors to develop strategies and materials for effective tutoring and learning skills support.
• Contributes to the work of the tutoring program by participating in promotion and outreach events and assisting with daily operations of the Tutoring Center as needed.

• Fosters and maintains a safe environment of respect and inclusion for faculty, staff, students, and members of the community.

• Maintains a thorough knowledge of subject concepts and materials, as well as multiple instructional methodologies, to accommodate various student learning styles.
• Attends training sessions and participates in professional development activities covering a variety of tutoring and academic skills-related topics.

• Related Certificate or Associate's Degree
• Six (6) months of teaching, tutoring, supplemental instruction experience, or equivalent related learning support experience.
