Located at bp's Whiting Refinery in Whiting, Indiana, the Instrumentation Engineer is responsible for the safe and efficient execution of instrumentation engineering and maintenance work within the refinery. This is accomplished through the coordination of several resources including maintenance supervisors, engineers, specialists, craftsmen, contractor personnel and required materials in support of daily maintenance activities and refinery driven improvements.
The Instrumentation Engineer is responsible for developing short, medium and long range plans for process instrumentation equipment and systems that support the HSSE, availability and financial goals of the refinery. This is accomplished through development and execution of preventative maintenance, predictive maintenance, reactive maintenance support, and equipment & system upgrades.
Key Accountabilities- Undertakes responsibility for management of technical integrity.
- Directs critical activities requiring instrument and control knowledge and expertise.
- Provides daily technical support to instrument technicians and supervisors.
- Provides technical support on instrumentation application to process engineering, process control, operations, and process safety functional groups
- Assists in planning and execution of turnaround instrument and control activities.
- Provides technical recommendations in determining priority and scope of equipment repairs.
- Participates/Leads root-cause-analysis failure investigations for instrument and control related incidents.
- Analyzes equipment monitoring data and develops appropriate response to reliability issues.
- Generates and maintains instrumentation key performance indicators
- Reviews engineering projects and improvements to ensure compliance with refinery standards, national electric codes and other applicable industry standards.
- Participates in Layer of Protection Analysis and Hazard and Operability Study evaluations and drives implementation of resulting actions in the instrumentation area.
- Completes engineering design and documentation for small refinery improvement and modification projects.
- Assists in developing and maintaining plant instrumentation and control engineering and safety standards.
- Develops and manages reliability projects for refinery instrument and control systems.
- Prepares engineering datasheets & drawing results and material/equipment order specifications.
- Reviews supplier data and witnesses shop tests, and writes material requisitions.

- Knowledge of industry codes, guidelines and regulatory standards to include NEC, ISA, NFPA, and API.
- Experience with distributed control systems, instrumentation and controls and basic analyzers
- Experience with Safety Instrumented Systems and knowledgeable in cause-and-effect diagrams
- Experience with instrument and control equipment design, specification, installation, repair & maintenance
- Experience with various types of control valves
- Technical knowledge of instrument and control system engineering calculations, construction methods, and materials.

**What You'll Be Doing**
**Job Scope:** Generally be responsible for performing all aspects for complete designs of small and large electrical and instrumentation engineering assignments using theoretical knowledge and practical design methods. This work will be performed under general supervision.
**Primary responsibilities will include but not be limited to:**
+ Familiarity with and utilizing department design and drafting standards.
+ Familiarity with project scope, specifications and design criteria upon assignment to a project task team.
+ Recognize and communicate scope and design changes promptly.
+ On-site assistance during startup.
+ Producing estimate level preliminary designs and material take-offs suitable for the level of the estimate being performed on a project.
+ Producing detail design calculations and sketches for materials of construction associated with the project. Calculations produced will be neatly prepared and organized for efficient checking by others and efficient use by drafters/designers for preparing drawings and as a deliverable when required.
+ Producing designs with efficient use of construction materials with an overall emphasis on ease of construction and completed product meeting the expectations of the client.
+ Checking calculations made by other engineers to ensure accuracy, conformance to codes, specifications, design criteria and conformance to good engineering practice.
+ Assisting the drafting group in resolving routine layout and detailing problems. It is your responsibility to furnish sufficient sketches and details necessary for completion of engineering drawings.
+ Consulting with design leaders from other disciplines to ensure the smooth flow of vital information necessary for the scheduled completion of the project.
+ Advising the senior engineer concerning design or scope changes, which have been identified.
+ Assisting other engineers in developing and assembling scopes, drawings and specifications into a "package", enabling electrical/instrumentation purchase inquiries to be issued for procurement of materials or subcontract pricing.

+ Specify and select instruments following company standards and operational requirements.
