**SUMMARY OF POSITION:**
The laboratory assistant is responsible for performing phlebotomies on patients of all age groups, performing patient registrations and ordering laboratory tests in the EMR, processing of laboratory specimens, the collection of specialized tests, and performing breath alcohol testing.
**MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S):**
+ High school graduate or equivalent required
+ Valid Driver's license or eligible for a Commonwealth of PA driver's license if out of state
**PREFERRED QUALIFICATION(S):**
+ Completion of a phlebotomy, certified nursing assistant, or medical assistant training course
+ Certification with ASCP or the National Healthcareer Association, Inc. as a certified phlebotomy technician or other discipline listed above
+ Customer service experience
+ Must have the ability to work well under pressure and multitask in a fast paced environment
+ Medical terminology is helpful

**General Summary**
Performs a variety of general support duties in specimen procurement, clerical office, central processing, and/or other assigned areas at an entry skills level. Functions in on- and/or off-site service areas. May work any part of a 24 hour period. May be required to accept on-call responsibilities.
**Essential Functions:**
+ Answers telephones, routes callers, takes messages and provides routine information to callers.
+ May receive specimens into the laboratory, process specimens, deliver specimens to on- and off-site locations, store specimens for future analysis and dispose of specimens.
+ May receive and transport supplies, equipment, reports and specimens between the laboratory and other health care locations.
+ May collect specimens as directed using appropriate or specified equipment for collecting and handling specimens.
+ Enters or retrieves data from established computer files.
+ Provides complete and accurate instructions to patients and other customers of the laboratory.
**Common Expectations:**
+ Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population. Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment. Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s).
