Responsibilities

Standards and framework development:
Support the development and refinement of sustainability-related standards, metrics, and protocols. Conduct literature reviews, benchmark best practices, and contribute to technical criteria that define credible sustainability performance.
Technical expertise and Communication:
Provide subject matter expertise in one or more domains such as LCA, product carbon footprinting, recyclability, circular economy, sustainable materials, or related methodologies. Translate technical findings into actionable insights for internal and external stakeholders. Prepare reports, white papers, and presentations to support client projects, standards development, and thought leadership.
Innovation and improvement:
Identify opportunities to strengthen UL's sustainability science capabilities. Develop and pilot new methods, tools, or approaches that address emerging industry needs and regulatory requirements.
Collaboration across teams:
Work closely with colleagues across sustainability services, certification, engineering, testing, and external partnerships. Share knowledge and contribute to joint projects that deliver business and societal impact.
External engagement:
Represent UL externally through technical working groups and standards committees related to sustainability topics. Build relationships with external organizations (standards bodies, industry consortia, academic institutions, and NGOs) to stay current on sustainability science trends, contribute to collaborative projects, and enhance UL's thought leadership.
Qualifications / Knowledge / Skills
+ Minimum B.S. degree from an accredited university, advanced degree preferred (Master's or Ph.D.) in engineering, physical sciences, sustainability, environmental science, industrial ecology, or a related scientific discipline.
+ 3-6 years of relevant professional experience in connecting sustainability innovation to core business value.
+ Demonstrated expertise in at least one core sustainability science area (e.g., life cycle assessment, carbon accounting, circular economy, material health, sustainable design, etc).
+ Awareness of cross-sector collaborations relevant to key environmental sustainability challenges.
+ Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with proficiency in sustainability assessment tools, databases, and/or data analysis software.
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with ability to explain technical concepts to diverse audiences.

This position is eligible for annual bonus compensation with a target payout of 20% of the base salary. This position also provides health benefits such as medical, dental and vision; wellness benefits such as mental and financial health; and retirement savings (401K) commensurate with the standard rewards offered in each individual location or country. The Global Research & Development (GR&D) Wipes Lead Scientist Formulations – Front End Innovation provides formulation expertise and leadership for developing technologies and formulations for global wet wipes and dry tissue.  This role resides within the GR&D Wipes Product Steward organization and will primarily be focused on supporting global wet wipe and dry tissue product development. This role partners closely with GR&D, KCNA R&D, Global Quality, Marketing, EHS and Segment R&D teams.  

In this role, you will:

  • Leads formulation development projects that meet consumer, quality, product safety and compliance needs. Delivers formulations per project timelines and IMF commitments.
  • Develops creative technical solutions based on consumer insights, leveraging published scientific research, patent art, and deep understanding of cosmetic raw materials and formulation stability fundamentals.
  • Works closely with Formulation Technical Leader and Formulation Team members to progress formulation development activities and design/carry-out lab experiments.
  • Closely partners with Global and Regional R&D product development and Marketing teams to ensure work meets project needs. Builds strong relationships with at least one business to coordinate support.  
  • Considers impact of new technologies on quality and manufacturing. Works with D&C to develop line-of-sight to commercial implementation at K-C or external facilities. 
  • Evaluates data and provides interpretation.  Makes connections between formulations, product performance and aging/stability data. Makes recommendations on product development activities.
  • Communicates complicated technical information in a clear and engaging manner to non-technical audiences and builds credibility to gain buy-in on recommendations.
  • Develops new technologies (or re-purpose technologies) and apply those technologies to deliver consumer-relevant benefits to meet business priorities.
  • Leads/supports projects and carries out accountabilities with a collaborative mindset ensuring visibility of progress/results to all key stakeholders.

+ Lead the design, development, and evaluation of advanced liquid cooling solutions. Advance thermal management technologies for HPC infrastructures, focusing on direct-to-chip and immersion cooling systems.
+ Serve as the subject matter expert in evaluating thermal performance and electrical/computational performance criteria.
+ Design, source, build, and operate testbeds and proof-of-concept systems, analyzing thermal and computational performance with a deep understanding of underlying physics.
+ Develop and validate thermal models for various challenging thermal designs including die, package, system level thermal modeling.
+ Work closely with Chemistry teams to develop new materials for high-power chip cooling, provide guidance of discrete material properties, and identify key performance-critical factors.
+ Conduct simulations, thermal-mechanical analysis, CFD modeling, and statistical Design of Experiments to optimize system performance.
+ Work closely with external partners to ensure product features and thermal performance objectives are successfully achieved.
+ Partner with cross-functional teams to drive novel chip thermal management technologies, ensure high scientific rigor, and deliver solutions with industry-leading performance.
+ Provide identification and creation of new techniques to advance thermal/mechanical development and validation.

**YOU MUST HAVE**
+ 10+ years' experience in electronics thermal engineering,
+ 5+ years of experience in the electronics industry specifically related to high-power liquid cooling.
+ Expertise in liquid cooling strategies, including design of fluid loop control, cold plates, manifolds, immersion tanks, etc.
+ Hands-on expertise in programming, instrumentation, and data analysis (e.g., MATLAB, LabVIEW).
+ Proficiency in thermal-mechanical analysis, thermodynamic property calculations, and CFD simulations.
+ Expertise in thermal fluid dynamics, heat transfer, system-level thermal design.
+ Working knowledge and design ability for data center liquid cooling technologies.
+ Experience in liquid cooling deployments, custom cold plate design, or immersion-cooled infrastructure.
+ Strong understanding of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer principles.
+ Provide identification and creation of new techniques to advance thermal/mechanical development and validation.
**WE VALUE**
+ Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field is preferred.
+ Background in heterogeneous integration, advanced material development, and testing is a plus.

The annual base salary range for this position is $136 - $169k. This position is incentive eligible. Please note that this salary information serves as a general guideline.
