Job Summary:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 1 to 3 years experience in academic advising, academic support services, or related field required.
  • Strong interpersonal communication, organizational and problem-solving skills, including the ability to work independently, and professionally required.

  • Directly supporting students through scheduled and walk-in support, with a particular focus on students who are transitioning between majors or academic schools.
  • Organizing and delivering advising skill presentations and workshops for students and advisors to enhance advising knowledge, skill, and capacity across the campus.
  • In partnership with the School-Based Advising Centers, developing a curriculum and a series of user-friendly materials to communicate about advising and academic programs.
  • Collaborating with the Director of CAAS to transition students between advising and academic support interventions when necessary.
  • Administering proactive advising practices and advising campaigns to assure that students who face academic challenges are consistently identified, supported, and communicated with in positive ways to best support their academic journey, including administering relevant technology as needed.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The department of Academic Advising contributes to the University College mission of ensuring the successful transition of first- and second-year students into the University to put them on track toward graduation in four years.

Primary Purpose of Position

The University College Coordinator of Academic Advising & Training plays a critical role in supporting student success by overseeing academic and developmental advising of NCCU students at the freshmen and sophomore levels in University College. The position reports to the Associate Dean with the primary function of oversight and coordination of higher-level tasks associated with the Academic Advising Unit in University College including leading staff training and professional development, conducting unit wide assessments, organizing student programming, addressing student complaints, and leveraging advising technology. The Coordinator of Academic Advising & Training will collaborate with student affairs offices, department chairs, and academic program coordinators to help progress a holistic campus advising structure that recognizes the interconnected nature of students’ health and personal lives with their academic plans. The Coordinator of Academic Advising & Training will also maintain a reduced student advising caseload (approximately .25 of average advising load) of first year students, sophomores, and transfer students.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Excellent organizational and communication skills including ability to prioritize work and multitask. Familiarity with and appreciation for the mission and structure of NCCU programs and curricula. Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with students, supervisors, and colleagues. Commitment to ongoing professional development.

Minimum Education/Experience

Master’s degree required in education, counseling, or similar related field required, with three (3) to five (5) years experience in higher education to include excellent advising preferred.

Serve as the primary expert and central resource on advising-related technology platforms and institutional policies, including Banner, Navigate, Degree Works, and other systems critical to academic advising and undergraduate registration. Provide comprehensive support to University College advising staff and affiliated campus partners, ensuring the effective and policy-compliant use of these tools to advance student success.

Design and lead University College advisor training programs that integrate technical proficiency with a deep understanding of university policies, procedures, and academic regulations. Stay current on institutional and system-wide policy updates.

Actively identify gaps, inconsistencies, or inefficiencies in current advising policies and procedures. Leverage on-the-ground insights and expertise to advocate for thoughtful policy enhancements that improve the student and advisor experience across the institution.

Function Administrative

Provide Academic Advisement to a caseload of NCCU University College students (first year, sophomores and transfer students) through one-on-one meetings, workshops, or presentations regarding majors, degree requirements, academic progress, and selection of courses for future semesters. Function Administrative

Facilitate the student transition cycle from University College into their respective academic departments, ensuring a seamless and informed handoff that supports timely degree progression.

Collaborate with campus partners to ensure advising maintains a visible and supportive role in both advising-specific and institution-wide events that enhance the first-year and second year student experience.

We are seeking an Academic Advising Navigator who will support the Center for Student Success with retention and student degree completion efforts. The Academic Advising Navigator will respond to inquiries from students, faculty, and other campus administrators; maintain standards of confidentiality and privacy in accordance with the College, FERPA, student records, and any other protected documentation. Other tasks include updating program materials, managing calendars, scheduling meetings and events, preparing, and maintaining meeting minutes. This is a part-time, hourly position.

Example of Duties:

  • Greet visitors, answer, and route phone calls to serve the needs of students, academic advising staff, and faculty; maintain and organize college resource fliers; assist with maintaining office supplies and equipment including inventory, distribution, and requisitions.
  • Assist with student registration; provide information to students regarding scheduling and advising; and assists students to find appropriate resources at the college.
  • Train students on how to navigate the student portal and other PCCC IT resources.
  • Provide outreach to students using email, phone, video, or in-person meetings.
  • Use relevant college resources and refer students to services based on individual student needs.
  • Work with the academic advising staff to promote guidelines and information on academic programs; refer students to an academic advisor when they deviate from an established academic plan.

Student Advisement

  • Independently advises students and continually reflects on optimization of advising processes in place in the College of Information Science.
  • Assesses individual students' academic and career development stages and promotes their growth by determining suitable tasks and helping students set suitable goals as well as make decisions about degree programs and career options.
  • Evaluates use of transfer credit for students and also the transfer agreements for the College of Information Science more generally.

  • Monitors students' academic progress, determines satisfactory progress toward degree, and assists students in degree completion.
  • Engages in the assessment of students' needs (e.g., study skills, tutoring) and designs plans for students to address those needs.

  • Manages student records following all legal regulations and policies.

The Recruiting and Academic Advising Specialist is full-time position reporting to the Director of Online Programs in the Bryan School of Business and Economics. The primary areas of responsibility will be to recruit potential online students into the Bryan School including at both virtual and in person events, provide pre-admission advising to online students, and advise enrolled online campus students in the Bryan School.

  • Assist prospective undergraduate students with understanding what will transfer and what needs to be taken, major selection, how to apply for financial aid and scholarships, and other pre-enrollment issues to ensure a smooth transition.
  • Assist enrolled online undergraduate students with course selection and pathway planning, academic goal setting and development.
  • Assist with first-year and transfer new student orientations as well as participate in advising and registration sessions for returning and readmitted students each semester.

  12. Serve as Success Coach training program coordinator for all faculty and staff who are involved in advising students. Utilize various technologies to promote the program
  13. Maintain and update Success Coach and advisee information found on the college website and online catalog
  14. Serve as an assigned Success Coach to a designated student group and provide academic advising services to students through walk-ins and appointments
  15. Provide counseling for students related to personal and academic success and concerns
  16. Assist with ACT and placement testing
  17. Assist with planning and implementing student engagement activities
  18. Collaborate and advise with the University of Mississippi on the institutions' joint partnership programs- Two-Plus-Two and Path4
  19. Participate in meetings and serve on committees as required and function as an advocate for advising within the college community
  20. Work collaboratively with the marketing and academic staff to develop program brochures and other informational materials
  21. Other job-related duties as assigned by the Student Services Manager.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Self-motivated with the ability to function productively and independently;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to establish positive working relationships;
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents.
  • Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, and Excel)
