For over 50 years, Legal Aid Chicago has provided free civil legal assistance to people living in poverty in metropolitan Chicago. Each year our attorneys, volunteers, and staff help resolve civil legal problems, including domestic violence, consumer fraud, and unfair evictions. Legal Aid Chicago was founded on the philosophy that all individuals are entitled to quality civil legal representation, regardless of their income. We work to ensure that poverty is not an impediment to justice.
Legal Aid Chicago offers a hybrid work environment. Our office, located in downtown Chicago at 120 S. LaSalle Street, is ADA accessible and has convenient access to public transportation and local expressways. This position requires in-person presence 3 days per week at the Aspire Center for Workforce Innovation in Chicagos Austin community.
Position : Legal Aid Chicago seeks one full-time Intake Specialist in our Client Screening Group (CSG). CSG is the central entry point for applicants seeking legal assistance from Legal Aid Chicago. Applications for services are accepted by phone, online, in person, and through referrals from community partners. This position supports our partnership with Westside Health Authority to provide on-site intake for participants in their reentry and job placement services and more generally to be a community-based resource for Austin residents.
Responsibilities
- Register applicants for services in an electronic case management system
- Conduct interviews (mostly by phone) to determine applicants eligibility for services, gather basic case facts, and identify basic legal problems
- Apply Legal Aid Chicagos eligibility guidelines and legal services priorities to determine the appropriate level of service for clients
- Provide referrals and give limited legal advice under the direction and supervision of attorneys
- Schedule appointments with one of Legal Aid Chicagos Practice Groups for applicants who may need more extended legal representation
- Attend staff meetings and trainings to develop knowledge to provide high-quality legal services
- Maintain case notes, records, and accurate timekeeping in electronic case management system
- Maintain proficiency with all equipment, technology, policies and procedures needed to perform duties
- Engage with other service providers at the Aspire Center to coordinate services

Pay scale and benefits
This position is part of the National Organization of Legal Services Workers, UAW Local 2320. The Collective Bargaining Agreement sets employment terms and compensation is determined by the CBA salary scale, based on paid experience.
The budgeted salary range for this position is $45,760-$0,738, which reflects 0-10 years of paid, credited experience.

Legal Intake Specialist
North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic is seeking a full-time Legal Intake Specialist .
The mission of the North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic (NSLAC) is to provide accessible, quality, equitable, free legal services in the areas of domestic violence, housing, and immigration to give low-income, at-risk community members access to justice and the opportunity to live productive and secure lives. NSLAC is a 10-year-old dynamic nonprofit with a collaborative culture and the goal of becoming the model legal aid organization focused on suburban communities.
The Intake Specialist will be responsible for screening clients for eligibility and will report to the Managing Attorney.
Job Responsibilities
- Screen potential clients by phone to determine eligibility for NSLACs legal services in close collaboration with domestic violence, housing and immigration practice groups;
- Enter client information into case management database;
- Schedule intakes for clients with practice groups;
- Provide referrals to clients who are not eligible for services;
- Check online requests for intakes;
- Maintain callback spreadsheet;
- Interpret and translate documents for NSLAC staff;
- Provide administrative support including copying, scanning, and mailing;
- Perform other responsibilities needed to ensure NSLAC teams success.
Qualifications/Skills:
- Bilingual (Spanish-English) required;
- Bachelor's degree preferred;
- A demonstrated team-player with exemplary interpersonal skills;
- Compassion, patience and empathy towards clients experiencing hardship and trauma;
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
- Experience with client services and/or working in a legal environment preferred.

The Municipal Court Pretrial Unit (MCPT) focuses on reducing mass incarceration by supporting clients before trial through a wide array of rehabilitative initiatives and programs to divert clients from incarceration. A law clerk assigned to the MCPT Unit is a key member of the defense team who provides legal representation to indigent individuals accused of crimes in Philadelphia. Law clerks represent Defender clients in various courtrooms and stages of their cases. Law clerks practice in Preliminary Arraignment Court, Bench Warrant Court, Discovery Court, Common Pleas Arraignment and more. Law clerks conduct comprehensive confidential legal interviews at the local prisons, essential to effective client representation, write motions, file investigation requests, social service referrals and more. Law clerks appear before Bail Commissioners and makes arguments related to pre-trial supervision and detention. They also argue appeals to bail decisions before Municipal Court Judges. Law clerks also conduct confidential pre-arraignment socio-bio interviews to gather mitigation to inform bail decisions.
What You'll Do:
- Arraignment Preparation : Prepare arraignment court sheets, gathering all relevant client documents, and ensure all information is accurate for proper transfer to client files.
- Case Review & Advocacy : Review clients' charges and records, advocating for the least restrictive means of pretrial supervision before the Bail Commissioner.
- Client Communication : Communicate with clients' family members both by phone and in person, providing updates and responding to inquiries.
- Courtroom Rotation : Rotate weekly through various courtrooms, and interact with Judges, Court Staff, Prison Staff, Magistrates and/or Commissioners to gather relevant information for clients' cases.
- Client Interviews: Conduct in-depth confidential initial legal client interviews, gathering relevant information regarding clients' cases, charges, and personal circumstances. These interviews take place in person at Philadelphia jails, local county jails, local State Correctional Institutions (SCI), the Office and over the phone.
- Investigation Requests & Referrals : File investigation requests based on legal interviews, and assess client needs to make appropriate referrals to social services, mental health, immigration, etc.
- File Management & Discovery : Update client files before hearings by reviewing and requesting discovery, and complete return work post-hearing by marking and updating files before forwarding them onto other units.
- Collaboration : Ability to work with other law clerks and attorneys alike, sharing information, best practices and assistance on case preparation, client interactions, and courtroom procedures to help promote client centered advocacy.
What You'll Need
- Juris Doctorate required; Admission or pending Admission to Pennsylvania Bar preferred
- Must be able to work with diverse client population;
- Must be able to work well with others;
- Must have good organizational skills;
