Job DescriptionThe Middle School Literacy Specialist will be a visionary for students who are at-risk for academic underperformance due to reading and writing challenges. This person will support students to succeed in the rigorous academic programs offered at Rochester Prep. This role will focus on leading and delivering literacy interventions, that aim to close gaps in reading and writing, to students who are considered at-risk or students with specific learning disabilities. The Literacy Specialists will be instrumental in giving students access to grade level curriculum through literacy equity.
Reports to: Building Principal
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Oversee and deliver multi-tier literacy intervention services for students in grades 5 - 8.
- Monitor progress of students and share with school team leaders, teachers, and families.
- Create an inclusive and safe environment where students feel empowered to become self-guided learners.
- Collaborate with general and special education teachers, school leaders, and families to analyze and respond to trends in student work and assessments.
- Build positive relationships with students to ensure they feel seen, loved, and heard.
- Partner with students’ families to ensure appropriate resources are available to support learning needs.
- Participate in weekly, school-wide meetings to cultivate community, model our core values, and encourage student achievement.

- Required Experience:
- A demonstrated interest in impacting K-12 students in urban schools and communities (1-2 years experience preferred).
- Academic expertise in Literacy, Special Education, the Humanities, Social Sciences, or related fields of study.
- Prior to the start of employment, you must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Certification is not required to be hired at Uncommon, but you do need to meet NY state certification eligibility requirements. To meet these requirements, you must enroll in a teacher preparation program and maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher during your employment with us if you do not have a degree in education. Uncommon Schools teachers are required to become certified in the state of New York within a reasonable period after beginning employment.

Compensation
Compensation for this role is between $50,000 to $4,700.
Starting pay is determined using various factors including but not limited to relevant full-time teaching experience, education certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools. Candidates without full-time Teaching experience will likely have a starting salary of $ 0,000.

JOB OVERVIEW
The Literacy Specialist will work closely with the Home Office Instructional Team, Principal, Instructional Specialists, and teachers to provide professional development related to reading and writing instruction, reading intervention, reading across the content areas, and English Language Development for English Learners. The specialist must take a hands-on approach to improve instruction and effectiveness by working at various levels (classroom-, school-, system-wide) to directly support instruction, intervention, English Language Development. This will include working with school site Principals to develop a robust Response to Intervention program, analyze students’ Lexile levels, implement the Master Plan for English Language Learners, model lessons in classrooms, help teachers plan instruction, create system-wide policies and procedures, and facilitate and lead professional development.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Reading Intervention
- Work with ELA teachers to refine and develop common standards-based pacing plans, mid-year, and end-of-year common assessments for each grade level.
- Work with various teams (administrators, teachers, teacher leaders) to facilitate analysis of data provided by common assessments and formative assessments
- Continuously monitor, track and analyze student achievement data in order to identify needed literacy supports and strategies for all students
- Collaborate with schools to monitor ELL Levels, administer the ELPAC in a timely manner, and reclassify students when needed
Instructional Leadership
- Lead the implementation of a comprehensive reading intervention program as a component of the school's Response to Intervention (RTI) model.
- Provide small group intervention to various groups of students throughout the school day.
- Provide training to school site staff in the area of English Language Development.
Professional Development
- Collaborate with ICEF Home Office Instructional Team to plan and deliver pre-service summer professional development for new and returning staff members aligned to high priority initiatives and outcomes in the area of literacy.
- Support the development of high-quality/effective literacy instruction in ELA, History/SS, Science, and the Technical Subjects in all schools, grades K-8, including observing and coaching teachers to improve instructional planning, teaching practice, and the use of data, assessments, and instructional technology focused on literacy.
- Provide professional development to teachers focused on guided reading lesson planning, groupings, and data analysis.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Master’s Degree in Reading and/or Reading Specialist Credential or Certificate
- A Valid Clear California Professional Teaching Credential
- Reading Specialist Credential or Reading Certificate required
- Experience working with adult learners, coaching teachers, and delivering professional development
- A deep understanding of theories of literacy, including the diagnostic teaching of reading, reading intervention, adolescent literacy, Guided Reading, and English Language Development
- Experience with administering and interpreting results from various reading assessments.
- An understanding of the California the Common Core Standards, the Smarter Balanced Assessment
- Consortium, and researched-based best practices in curriculum design and instruction
- At least 5 years of ELA teaching experience in an urban school setting, serving low income and minority students
- Strong record of helping students achieve academic success, primarily with minority and low-income students
- Significant experience with ELA and ELD curriculum development and daily lesson planning, including familiarity with the California ELA/ELD Common Core Matrix
- Multi-faceted, multi-skilled, resourceful self-starter willing to do whatever it takes to help ICEF students reach a level of academic excellence

JOB SUMMARY:
- Train, test, and qualify all Level I and Level II Grain Read and Etch Operators.
- Provide management with constructive feedback.
- Conduct MSA Kappa and NDT Monitoring exercises quarterly.
- Identify and implement necessary improvement activities.
- Assist operations in reading when necessary to meet production schedules.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensure all calibrated NADCAP required equipment is up to standards in the grain etch area.
- Assist the responsible Level III in NADCAP audits as required.
- Create comprehensive Grain Etch Departmental work instructions.
- Approve product engineering instructions related to grain etch.
- Train and qualify all Level I Etch Operators.
- Train and qualify all Level II Grain Readers.
- Conduct visual inspections of production castings as necessary.
- Read and map all grain defects on NPI/FPQ approval lots thoroughly.
- Conduct MSA Kappa studies quarterly for all Level II grain read operators.
- Maintain regular NDT Defect Monitoring exercises as per internal guidelines.
- Keep detailed records and conduct RFT% reporting to the Quality Manager.
- Ensure weekly light meter readings are conducted by Level II Readers.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education: High school diploma or GED.
- Certifications: Level III Grain Read/Etch certificate from an approved source.
- Other Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Must have a good understanding of the metric system, possess the ability to read and process information, have basic computer skills, and demonstrate strong reasoning and communication skills. Attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, safety awareness, and a team-oriented mindset are crucial.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
- Work on the factory floor with exposure to acids and fumes.
- Required PPE: Check for necessary PPE in work areas.
- Safety Glasses: Required in all areas of the plant.
- Safety Shoes: Chemical resistant steel/composite toe shoes or boots are necessary.
