The Operations Supervisor provides direction at a single location, leading staff to ensure customer requirements are achieved while meeting our Penske goals and objectives.
Schedule: Wednesday-Saturday 6:00AM-6:00PM
Supporting: 65 Drivers

Salary: $54,900-$72,700 annually and bonus eligible up to 12% of base salary

Provide operational leadership to individual contributors and hourly workforce to ensure the execution of daily tasks and activities including driver deliveries, loading/unloading of trailers, and customer service operations in a manner consistent with company services and cost objectives. Supervises most processes directly including people, systems, customer needs, equipment, etc.workforce and equipment scheduling. Responsible for performance management of direct reports. making corrective action and disciplinary decisions up to written warning level. Involved in the hiring process and customer meetings as necessary.
**Major Responsibilities:**
People
- Establish and sustain that all supervisors and associates are trained and competent and understand how their work relates to the customers' business objectives
- Establish and sustain that performance standards are communicated that are specific and measurable
- Interview hourly associates and provide recommendations for hire
- Monitor attendance, productivity, and other performance standards and provide coaching and counseling to associates
- Motivate and engage associates by focusing on team accomplishments and recognition
Operations
- Supervise logistics operations including customer service, freight loading and unloading, dispatch and proper documentation and procedure control
- Conduct team meetings
- Evaluate and recommend changes in preferred work methods to increase productivity of dispatch operations. Assist in new associate training
- Provide relief coverage for operational duties when associates utilize time-off or are absent from the shift
- Have a thorough working knowledge of the site's operating systems in order to ensure operational compliance and correct exception resolution
- Complete all necessary records and reports in a timely and accurate fashion
Finance
- Ensure compliance with financial policies & procedures such as tracking MPG, returns, damages, etc.
- Understand the relationship between decision-making and profitability
- Closely manage associates' working hours and activities to minimize overtime and to meet or exceed productivity targets
Safety
- Ensure day-to-day management and associate activities are aligned with the location safety strategy
- Provide associates with communication, training, feedback, and direction to ensure safe performance
- Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory agencies and company policies and procedures
- Conduct safety observations
Growth / Customer Experience
- Understand the location-specific customer goals & objectives and work to meet and exceed these expectations daily
- Ensure the customer knows that we are committed to helping them meet their objectives
- Determine areas that could benefit from Continuous Improvement efforts
Fleet/Assets
- Properly plan work assignments to ensure effective use of fleet equipment
- Work with hourly associates to ensure they understand safe and efficient operation of equipment
- Work with vendors to ensure equipment is maintained
- Work with Penske Truck Leasing to ensure schedule of preventative maintenance is complete
- Other projects and tasks as assigned by supervisor
**Job Qualifications:**
- Demonstrated leadership qualities with strong interpersonal skills and have the ability to connect, build rapport and maintain solid relationships with associates, Company leadership, internal and external customers. ¬
- Must have ability to work efficiently and independently with strong time management and organizational skills
- Strong written/oral communication skills and the ability to actively listen are required

  • Determine economical and efficient routes and address challenges associated with the movement/transportation of the product.

  • Manage customer needs and/or orders for load planning using software tools and considering various factors (geographical areas, delivery dates, amount of product, etc.) to optimize loads/truckloads.

  • Plan and prepare schedules that balance all parties’ (member, customer) needs with planned load efficiency and profitability.

  • Facilitate effective communication with haulers/drivers and for-hire carriers; provide daily hauler/carrier support through the automated tendering process and ensure all loads are picked up and delivered in a timely manner.

  • Communicate with plant personnel, haulers/drivers, for-hire carriers, and warehouse/shipping locations to resolve common shipment and/or service issues, special deliveries, and order adjustments; keep everyone informed of critical changes.

  • Support on-time delivery problem-solving and performance improvements with customers; actively communicate with all impacted parties to discover solutions to various issues, such as the shipment of the wrong product, excess or deficit of product, missed delivery time or date, etc.

  • Work closely with internal contacts to maintain vendor, carrier, and customer data, such as delivery location, frequency, etc.; use this information to support efficient and economical transportation of customer deliveries or shipments.

  • Ensure all transactions are tracked and accurately recorded in the appropriate systems. Daily reconcile assigned transactions (pickups/receipts) with customers, haulers, members, etc.

  • Ensure plant managers/staff, suppliers, customers, and haulers have properly documented, reported, and or entered all product and freight data required in the systems.

  • Review with management the status of the current week’s activities and transactions; provide an estimate of the current month’s performance, if appropriate.

  • Perform demand forecasts for peak delivery periods, as requested.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in Business, Logistics, Supply Chain, Distribution Management, or related curriculum preferred.

  • 2-5 years’ experience of logistics planning, transportation, distribution, supply chain, or related experience.

  • Working knowledge of the motor carrier industry is required.

  • Knowledge or experience with transportation management systems (TMS).

  • Computer proficiency with MS Excel and Word, with adaptability to learn new systems quickly.

  • General knowledge of regulatory requirements, rules, and regulations (DOT, GMP, USDA, OSHA, HACCP).

  • Ability to problem-solve basic to moderately difficult situations, multi-task, and prioritize work activities.

  • Quality of work must be high, with accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Ability to travel up to 10%

Responsible for providing more complex professional logistics and transportation engineering functions, collecting and analyzing various data, determining solutions and developing reports, proposals, and related information. Ball Horticultural Company is a leading breeder and distributor of flowers and vegetables around the globe. Located in the suburb of West Chicago (near Naperville and Geneva), our 60-acre property boasts 10 acres of display gardens. The gardens are primarily used as a sales and marketing tool but also provide a great relaxation opportunity for staff at the home office. Perennials, annuals, vegetables, roses, and shrubs are blooming from May through September.

This position is responsible for planning, executing, and managing shipments and execution of deliveries for Ball Horticultural Company. It is heavily involved in live, perishable goods distribution within North America via multimodal delivery. The Load Planner is responsible for working with domestic vendor locations and transportation providers to plan and prepare shipments and ensure that they are correctly delivered to customers on a weekly basis, maintaining clear communication with all parties including the customer.

Job Responsibilities

  • Analyze near future orders and dispatch pertinent information to Ball suppliers and transportation vendors in preparation of shipping to fulfill sales for the season.
  • Manage efficient and cost-effective transportation services, deliver high quality product, through high level carrier performance to ensure best balance between cost and service. It is important to maintain consistent levels of high customer delivery satisfaction at an economical price.
  • Determine standard/optimal methods of delivery for weekly shipments and propose other methods of delivery if unforeseen circumstances alter regular routings in order to guarantee the best quality of delivery for live perishable products and avoid damages and loses from extensive transit time or loss of temperature control.
  • Create and manage all necessary shipment documentation and all other pertinent information to ensure smooth transition of goods from the origin to delivery to the final customer.
  • Maintain contact with Ball Customer Service and Sales Team to adjust shipping plans based on order changes.
  • Increase and maintain the present delivery routes and deliveries from our current delivery base (air, truck, LTL, Parcel).
  • Process carrier invoices to ensure timely Accounts Payable approval and allocate costs to orders where applicable.
  • File transportation claims with carriers and review internal claims from Ball customers including filing and determining if credits are due to the customer for damaged products.
Requirements
  • Minimum of 2 years in logistics/transportation work
  • High School Diploma/GED required, Associate Degree or higher preferred.
  • Must have a working knowledge of domestic transportation networks, modes of shipments and required steps to move products in North America.
  • Strong software and system skills - SAP, Microsoft Suite.
  • High accuracy and attention to detail combined with ability to multitask and prioritize daily work.
  • Ability to interact with cross-functional teams to resolve transportation issues related to movement, billing, invoice payment.
  • Action Oriented - takes on new opportunities and tough challenges with a sense of urgency, high energy, and enthusiasm
  • Collaborates - builds partnerships and works collaboratively with others to meet shared objectives
  • Communicates Effectively - develops and delivers multi-mode communications that convey a clear understanding of the unique needs of different audiences
Pay Range: $20-27/hour

YOUR ROLE

Responsible for providing more complex professional logistics and transportation engineering functions, collecting and analyzing various data, determining solutions and developing reports, proposals, and related information. Perform activities that involve the application of more complex engineering principles and practices, project management functions and developing moderate cost or operational models. Models and acts in accordance with our guiding principles and core values.

•Collect, review and analyze logistic and operational system data, which involves more complex logistics and transportation engineering principles and practices.
•Determine solutions or changes to current or proposed system operations to ensure efficient results; projects are typically more complex in nature and may assist with operations that are more specialized.
•Develop cost models, assumptions and risks for projects that are typically moderate in scope; receive assistance or direction as required.
•Develop project, improvement, or current/future state proposals or presentations for customers or management for projects under scope.
•Identify and deliver project milestones, communicate with stakeholders, removing obstacles and ensuring resources are available.
•Develop or recommend standard operating procedures, work instructions, and related materials.
•Outline and perform work, time, and efficiency studies, talk with supervisors and employees and discuss with customers to apply and monitor operations.
•Ensure processes and operations comply with applicable laws, rules and regulations; seeks advice and interpretation when required and apply across operations.
•Coordinate with related safety, quality, environmental and related needs as requested or required.
