The responsibilities of this job include, but are not limited to the following:
- Following the laboratory's procedure for specimen collection, handling, and processing, as well as test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of test results;
- Following the laboratory's quality control policies;
- Documenting all quality controls activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance;
- Identifying indicators that may impact test performance or reporting of test results and either making corrections or notifying Lab Supervisor;
- Ordering, receiving, and distributing laboratory stock as needed in laboratory and treatment area;
- Understanding all checklists and being able to perform all duties on the checklists associated with the position;
- Adhering to safety policies as defined by Patient First and OSHA;
- Providing positive, warm and friendly customer service in all interactions;
- Fostering teamwork and a positive, professional atmosphere;
- Completing other duties as directed.
Minimum education and professional requirements include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Employee must be at least 18 years of age;
- High school graduate or equivalent;
- Keyboarding experience required;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- One year of clerical experience preferred;
- One year of clinical experience preferred;
- Minimum 60 semester hours from a regionally accredited college, including chemistry, biology, and medical laboratory techniques, or an Associate degree in chemistry, biology or related science. Completion of clinical rotations in the areas of microbiology, urinalysis, chemistry and hematology; or Fifty week military Medical Laboratory Procedures course and meet qualifications for military enlisted occupational specialty of "Medical Laboratory Specialist";
- Registered Medical Technologists (M.T.) or Medical Laboratory Technicians (M.L.T.) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or other recognized certification agency of medical laboratory professionals preferred;
- Registry-eligible technologists are encouraged to apply.
Salary Range: $31.50 - $35.50, depending on experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Utilize the Information System to receive patients, order and collect samples, result tests, answer questions from nurses and physicians, document quality control activities and produce reports required to perform job tasks.

- Analyze test results prior to release of information to chart for validity and accuracy. Recognizes subtle yet significant problems which occur with testing methodologies. Troubleshoots suspect test results using technical knowledge and experience. Implements corrective action when inaccurate, inappropriate findings/results/reports are identified.
- Performs high complexity tests such as bone marrow, sperm morphology, etc.
- Assure that designated turnaround times for results are met and that critical results are appropriately reported and documented.
- Perform quality control and proficiency testing procedures as defined by policy.
- Interpret and troubleshoot quality control results to ensure accurate and precise test results.
- Perform preventative maintenance, advanced troubleshooting and calibration of laboratory instrumentation.
- Participate in method and instrument evaluation and implementation.
- Investigates/resolves technical issues.
- Participates on interdepartmental committees or teams.
- Participates in teaching students and training new partners.
- Completes and signs off on competency checklists for techs.
- Develops updates and procedures as requested.
- Serves as a resource to inexperienced partners.
- Performs additional tasks such as scheduling, antibiograms, etc.
- Maintain competency in current procedures and gain competency for new methods implemented.
Education and Experience

**The pay range for a Medical Laboratory Technician is $8.80 - 41.76 per hour and Medical Laboratory Scientist is 32.36 46.92 per hour. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience.**

**Associate's degree in MLT or laboratory science from an accredited two-year college or technical school required** **or** **Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in clinical science or satisfactory grade in HHS exam and 6 years working experience as a MLT required. MLT-ASCP board certified or NCA certified preferred. BLS certified or must be obtained within 1 week of hire. Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) and DOT Drug Testing certified or able to obtain within one year from date of hire. Department of Transportation Specimen Collection Certificate preferred or able to obtain within one year from date of hire. Valid driver's license required.**
**The starting hourly pay for a Medical Laboratory Technician is $8.80 per hour and Medical Laboratory Scientist is 32.36 per hour. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience.**

**A Brief Overview**
Responsible for expeditious and accurate performance of routine clinical laboratory tests, record keeping, preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment and procedures.
**What you will do:**
+ Performs testing utilizing established protocol with a high degree of accuracy in all departments of the laboratory. Performs calibration, quality control checks and preventative maintenance steps on assigned instrumentation.
+ Reviews, researches, interprets and reports data. Assumes responsibility for distinguishing between normal and abnormal clinical parameters.
+ Properly identify patients before specimen collection, be able to explain the collection procedure and provide the necessary preparation and collection instructions to patients.
+ Collects, receives and transports blood and other specimens from patients following accepted standards of practice. Perform phlebotomy and other specimen collection procedures in a competent manner that does not result in the need for repeat collections or valid complaints from patients or clients.
+ Implements and monitors laboratory inventory and control program.
+ Responsible for resource utilization (supplies and equipment) in department.
+ Actively participates in quality assurance program. Recommends corrective action for problems identified. Reviews policies and reads procedures as scheduled. Assists in the preparation for inspections and participates during inspection.
+ Types and cross matches patients requiring transfusions, requests and receives units of blood from supplier, and maintains the necessary records.
+ Mentor new employees and assists with their orientation.
+ Lead, by example, following Freeman Regional Health Services CARE standards.
**Required Education,** **License/Certification,** **or Work Experience:**
+ Bachelor's Transcript showing Medical Laboratory Science degree or
+ Bachelor's Transcript showing Medical Technology degree
+ Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) within 6 months of employment or
+ MLS - American Medical Technologists (AMT) within 6 months of employment
+ Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) within 6 months of employment or
+ Medical Technologist (MT) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)?
