**Job Description**
**AECOM's Water Business Line** is seeking a talented **Entry-Level Building Mechanical (HVAC, Plumbing, and Fire Protection) Engineers** to support water, wastewater treatment, flood protection, and associated projects in our Chelmsford, MA office. This position offers a unique opportunity to work within an established and successful national group under the direct responsible charge and supervision of Registered Professional Engineers that offers a diverse range of technical challenges and career development opportunities. _This position is expected to begin in Spring/Summer 2026._
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
+ Perform assignments requiring the application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to carry out engineering tasks associated with the technical design and layout of HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems. Assignments are designed to further develop judgment and understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities.
+ Exercise engineering judgment for the development of preliminary selections and adaptations of engineering alternatives in the design of building HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems.
+ Prepare engineering-related calculations, specifications, and develop drawings and visual aids.
+ Prepare design drawings, plans, sections, details, and profiles/sections within the Autodesk Civil 3D, AutoCAD MEP, and Revit.
+ Work under the mentorship and supervision of a senior engineer.
+ Willingness and ability to occasionally travel to sites throughout North America.
**Qualifications**
**Minimum Requirements:**
+ Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or other related field.
+ Must have a valid U.S driver's license and as a condition of employment, must be able to pass AECOM's Motor Vehicle Records review.
**Preferred Qualifications:**
+ Prior related intern and/or professional experience.
+ Successful Passing of the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
+ Capable of using spreadsheet, word processing, and standard office software.
+ Basic knowledge of industry-standard computer software for the position such as AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, and commercially available engineering analysis packages.
+ Coursework in thermodynamics and hydraulics.
+ Detail-oriented while still able to understand/comply with the big picture/goals of a project.
+ Ability to multi-task.
+ Strong logic and writing skills.
+ Documents time and effort accurately.
+ Ability to work productively in a team environment.
+ Good verbal and written communication skills.
+ Flexible - can adapt to shifting priorities/work schedules.

The Mechanical Engineer position is a senior engineering role and presents an opportunity for a candidate to excel in their expertise and contribute to growing our Mechanical Engineering expertise and team, leadership growth, and mentoring team members. The position will report to the department manager and will have demonstrated capability to work independently to lead architecture and facility projects and team members. + Serve as Discipline Lead for the Mechanical Engineering team and have direct reports in varying levels of their career.
+ Serving as lead mechanical engineer HVAC designs on a variety of building project types, including mid-to large size architecture and facility projects.
+ Able to organize workload and work independently on project-specific design tasks and lead staff.
+ Able to communicate and present with clients and discuss/explain technical solutions to project conditions.
+ Project meetings and coordinating with the Architect of Record
+ Performing quality control reviews of work developed by others.
+ Providing technical input to studies and design and expertise for staff's specific areas of expertise/assignment.
+ Coordinate scope, schedule, budget in working with project managers and other senior level team members.
+ Using AutoCAD and REVIT for designs, engineering, and documentation.
+ Using energy modeling software applications such as Trane Trace and IES.
+ Mentoring and providing guidance to junior level staff for design approach and specific technical design aspects (design tools, analysis, standards, design, and calculations, etc.).
+ Provide direction to prescriptive and performance-based specifications.
+ Participating in development of technical proposals (including estimates for the engineering budget and schedule)
+ Reviewing permitting agency/engineering standards and regulations necessary to develop proper project design and permitting applications.
+ Work closely with other departments from the AECOM project team/office, including civil, architecture, building engineering, geotechnical, traffic engineers, landscape architects to provide value and partner in project opportunities.
+ Participating and supporting site investigations and construction related activities.
**Qualifications**
**Minimum Requirements:**
+ Due to the nature of the work, US Citizenship is required
+ Valid US Driver's License required, as a condition of employment must pass AECOM's motor vehicle records review.
**Position specific requirements are as follows:**
+ **Mid- Level Mechanical Engineer IV:**
+ BA/BS in Engineering plus 6 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
+ Registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Florida (current FL PE License), or able to register for the Principles & Practice (PE) Exam within 6 months.
+ **Senior Level Mechanical Engineer V:**
+ BA/BS in Engineering plus 8 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
+ Registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Florida (current FL PE License).
+ Experience as lead HVAC engineer for architecture and facility building projects.
+ Experience in leading Mechanical building design of projects and organizing work efforts and resources.
+ Experience in leading engagement and interface with client teams.
+ Experience using AutoCAD and REVIT for project designs.
+ Experience preparing calculations and design documents (reports, plans, specifications).
+ Experience in organizing and delivering project and milestones in timely and accurate manner.
+ Experience with construction phase services for projects (field reviews, RFI and shop drawing/submittal reviews, specifications, as-builts and record drawings, etc.)
+ Experience with permitting projects, and interaction with authorities having jurisdiction.
**Preferred Qualifications**
+ Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering is preferred
+ Experience, in mechanical HVAC engineering covering all aspects of building mechanical and plumbing for building design, having demonstrated management responsibilities.
+ Experience with engineering fundamentals and new industry standards - forward outlook.
+ Experience collaborating with senior project teams/disciplines and organize work and resources for project goals.
+ Experience working in large and complex projects/programs.
+ Experience on municipal, federal, and DOD projects and programs.

Experience in consulting, design, design management and project management will be highly regarded, as will experience in Owner's Engineer roles or contract management, and advisory (technical advisor/due diligence) roles as well as strategic project development experience.
Your primary responsibilities will focus upon leading a mechanical engineering team to provide advisory services and engineering design solutions for clients across all market sectors. You will also collaborate with our Client Account Managers and sales professionals on pursuits of strategic importance to the firm. You'll be expected to possess highly collaborative and sophisticated communication and problem-solving skills. Successful candidates will have a demonstrated the ability to anticipate challenges and manage "up and out" while supporting large teams responsible for the daily details of project delivery.

This is a Hybrid work-from-home position. This role will be expected to regularly work out of our local Jacobs office or Client site office.

· Bachelor's or Advanced Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related engineering discipline
· At least 10 years of engineering design and/or consulting experience.
· Professional Engineering licensure (any US state)
· Proven ability to engage with clients, develop relationships and win work, then deliver innovative solutions providing value to both the client and provider.
· Demonstrated ability to engage in business growth strategy, including exploration and development of new project opportunities, including knowledge and application of new and emerging technologies.
· Experience with proposal development and project execution planning, including scope development and manhour estimates for engineering services.
· Passion for mentoring and development of junior technical staff.
· Strong communication and technical writing skills
· Availability to travel as required to support project needs (varies by project but typically less than 50%)
· Availability to work at least 2 days per week in the Cary, NC office when not travelling
Other highly regarded qualifications include experience with:
· Thermal utility plants and distribution systems (steam, hot water, chilled water)
· Utility master planning or decarbonization/climate response planning
· Cogeneration or combined heat and power systems
· Heat pump/heat recovery chillers
· Prior personnel management responsibilities

The ideal candidate will be expected to immediately step in to assist and provide support for all design aspects of assigned jobs. The candidate shall show a solid understanding of the Mechanical Engineering discipline and have the ability to provide immediate support for a fast paced department. Candidate shall have working knowledge of AutoCAD MEP and/or Revit.
Job Responsibilities:
As an Mechanical Design Engineer, your primary responsibilities will be to assist the team with developing, designing and planning HVAC systems in accordance with job, client and owner specifications including:
- Perform hands-on Mechanical/HVAC Design using AutoCAD MEP and/or Revit platforms
- Perform heating and cooling load calculations with industry software (HAP or Trace)
- Select and schedule equipment with oversight by senior staff
- Layout air and water side systems on working drawings
- Understand fan and pump curves to properly select equipment for application
- Communicate with equipment vendors to determine requirements for applying products
- Perform field verification and take-offs of existing systems for renovation projects
- Coordinate with other disciplines (architecture, structural, etc) for HVAC details
- Maintain the Engineering Calculation Book for projects
- Understands work planning and manage design process to the available hours in work plan
- Understand both constant and variable flow systems, and properly apply equipment
- Self-motivated, ability to learn quickly, accept responsibilities and take on new challenges as presented.
Qualifications
- At least 3 years in designing HVAC systems or recent graduate with internship experience in the HVAC field for construction projects.
- Engineering Bachelors degree specializing in HVAC/Mechanical Engineering
- Familiar with AutoCAD, REVIT (PREFERRED), MEP
- Good Written and verbal communication
- EIT Certification is desired with ambition to attain PE license in the future
