Senior Mechanical Engineer
The Senior Mechanical Engineer is an active participant in the design, procurement, fabrication, assembly, integration, start‑up, and commissioning of very large‑scale automated aerospace assembly systems. They will work with other Design Engineers to concept, develop and design conventional and automated tooling systems and customized machine tools for the aerospace industry. They will take a lead role while working with other engineers to develop tooling concepts and designs.
Duties and Responsibilities- Design tools and automation equipment for aircraft and other precision manufacturing industries.
- Execute project goals related to the mechanical design engineering department.
- Provide support for new product introduction to manufacturing.
- Create and revise 3D designs and 2D drawings in accordance with internal and/or customer requirements.
- Self‑check and review all designs and drawings prior to final release to checking.
- Follow design procedures, fill out required forms and close all actions associated with internal and customer design processes.
- Possess required experience, skills and attributes for assigned level in engineering, technology, tools, and leadership on the Engineering Skills Matrix.
- Engineering – In training for advanced analysis; trained but needs support in concepting and stress; can work autonomously in drawings, design, technical publications.
- Technologies – In training for controls; trained but needs support in machine design and integration; can work autonomously in jigs & tools, platforms and operations.
- Software Tools – Can work autonomously in CATIA and GURU.
- Personal & leadership – Trained but needs support in ability to lead, customer interface, process‑based thinking, requirements management and scheduling & estimation.
- Field telephone calls from build suppliers and shop personnel for mechanical design engineering problems and associated issues.
- Ensure all changes, DCNs, and as‑built information is incorporated on drawings.
- Select, record, file, and maintain all component information for concepts and designs.
- Perform component and material sizing for designs; requests and provides input to cognizant stress analysis engineers.
- Understand and follow safety & environmental regulations and identify safety/environmental concerns.
- Adhere to the Quality System and participate in Continuous Improvement.
- Perform hand calculations and/or stress analysis and solicit review/check from cognizant engineers.
- Coordinate with electrical and software groups, attending controls reviews and providing input as required.
- Provide leadership to establish and meet design schedule goals.
- Perform peer‑check of designs and drawings as‑required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
- Five or more years related experience in one or more of the following: Heavy Machine Design, Structural Design Aerospace Tooling Assembly Systems and Automation.
- Manufacturing and machine shop background or relevant experience preferred.
- CAD Software Knowledge: CATIA V5, NX or Equivalent software knowledge (Solidworks, Pro E, etc.).
- Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software (Ansys or Femap is preferred).
- Must be able to obtain, maintain and/or currently possess a Secret security clearance.
- This position may require a government security clearance.
- Read and understand drawings and schematics (i.e., electronics, mechanics, hydraulics, pneumatics).
- Use computer‑aided design (CAD).
- Display a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment toward completing assignments in a timely manner.
- Familiar with a variety of fabrication concepts, practices, and procedures.

The Senior Mechanical Designer/Engineer will be responsible for providing a high level of leadership, mentoring and training for less experienced staff. This could be technical, project management, marketing, or business development in nature.
Responsibilities- Responsible for complete design by discipline for projects of all sizes
- Makes major design recommendations and design decisions with little input from senior staff
- Plans design work by discipline for all project sizes and assigns duties to staff working on projects
- Reviews correspondence prepared by junior staff
- Actively participates in quality control of projects
- Includes other duties as assigned
- Contributes to leadership in some aspect of our Technical Operations Team for both large and small projects
- Acts as an advisor and analyzes technical problems/writes reports
- Plays a significant role in project reviews for quality control for large complex projects
- Provides technical assistance to help resolve field issues, must be able to visit project sites and resolve technical issues with very little assistance from other senior staff
- Effectively serves as Project Manager on large complex projects or multiple smaller projects
- Identifies prospective clients, assists in marketing to develop new clients and prepares proposals for services
- Consistently brings work into the firm with existing or new clients and participates in presentations to clients
- Leadership attributes with the ability to communicate clearly both orally and written
- Mastery of the technical aspects of one’s discipline
- Demonstrated aptitude to design/manage major projects
- Ability to perform final quality control checks in the area of expertise
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Professional Engineer license preferred
- Minimum 10 years of qualifying experience

The power generation market continues to grow and evolve given strong capacity demand signals that haven’t existed for over a decade. As a result, our national Power Generation team is poised for monumental growth. We are seeking a qualified Senior Mechanical Engineer to help our clients develop, contract, and implement natural gas and potentially renewable energy generation projects while serving as Engineer of Record or Owner’s Engineer.

HDR is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our national Power Generation team. As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will be joining a highly capable, multi-discipline team that supports power and energy projects primarily within the utility, IPP, industrial, and institutional sectors. Primary duties typically involve leadership of the project mechanical team, coordination with other engineering disciplines, monitoring, and communication of project status, and providing mechanical engineering support for detailed design and owner’s engineer projects on both a technical and contractual level.
Preferred candidates will have significant experience utility-scale power generation systems and equipment, and proven ability to plan, schedule, and lead design projects. Typical deliverables developed by this individual and/or their team include construction drawings, bid specifications, mechanical equipment sizing calculations, technical memos, bid evaluations, code reviews, feasibility studies, reports, and cost estimates. Significant experience with the design and specification of power generation systems for simple cycle, combined cycle, distributed generation, and RICE projects is preferred.
Project roles will vary based on the size and type of the project, as well as the capabilities, experience, and preferred focus of the engineer. Project roles will typically consist of lead mechanical engineer and project engineering manager and may include project manager. Most tasks will be done in a collaborative manner involving engineers and designers from several other disciplines.
Preferred Qualifications
- BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited university.
- Minimum 15 years of experience in power generation design.
- Gas turbine, steam turbine and/or large reciprocating engine experience or subject matter expertise.
- Design experience with simple cycle and combined cycle power generation
- Previous experience with an engineering power consulting or EPC firm desired.
- Minimum 10 years of experience, ideally in the fossil power industry with a blend of design and owner’s engineer projects.
- Have the ability to handle multiple concurrent assignments.
- Excellent communication and analytical skills.
- Willing to mentor less experienced engineers and EITs.
- Proficient at working within an established schedule and budget
- Position will include an expectation of less than 10% travel for meetings with clients and vendors as well as project site visits.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering
- A minimum of 10 years of experience
- Professional Engineers (PE or P.Eng) license
- Extensive experience in project execution within the Power Market Sector
- Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office as well as standard Power Market Sector design software (examples include PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, AutoPipe, and Revit)
