Auburn patients and supports smooth and efficient administrative and clinical practice operations. The Medical Assistant has the ability to work with people from different backgrounds and respects the beliefs of all patients and team members. Reports to the Practice Manager. **Job Description:** **Essential Responsibilities including but not limited to:** 1. Through relationship development and care team coordination, contributes to the BILH Primary Care-Mt. Auburn patient, practice, and organizational goals. Develops long term empathetic relationships with patients, families and colleagues to contribute to patient care. 2. Assists patient over the course of their visit: facilitates timely flow and informs patient and provider of any delay in a timely manner, engages with patient on visit reason, updates medication and allergy lists, reviews screening questions (i.e. PHQ-9), acts as liaison between patient and practice staff to ensure optimal flow and service delivery. 3. Communicates clearly with patient and team: provides hand-off to provider entering the exam room (e.g., reason for the visit, abnormal vitals, patient stories). 4. Performs medical assisting duties under proper supervision, which may include, but are not limited to: obtaining accurate vital signs, height, and weight measurements, performing EKGs, point of care testing, phlebotomy, administering immunizations (certified MAs only), and assisting during routine procedures. 5. Essential to Population Health efforts by leading conversations to meet quality and population health goals through outreach and health coaching. Monitors practice activity, both electronically and in person. Identifies, addresses, and conducts outreach to patients with health maintenance or chronic disease management needs. Assists with related data gathering and basic health coaching. 6. Monitors, orders, and/or maintains medical equipment and supplies, ensuring they are clean, sterilized, stocked, and within expiration dates. Adheres to control standards. Maintains an unobstructed area for patient access. 7. Works within the electronic health record system (EHR) to queue prescription renewals and add new medications for review by a licensed provider. As directed by a clinician, enters/scribes orders for tests, services, or appointments in the EHR. Accurately documents tasks performed during the visit as they are completed to ensure proper billing. 8. Schedules related diagnostic and lab tests making every reasonable effort to accommodate patient and provider needs. Verifies patient insurance, including prior authorizations, referrals and pre-certifications. 9. Identifies OSHA compliance issues. Ensures patient safety practices to prevent/eliminate risk of patient harm. Promptly reports adverse patient events and near misses. Ensures that Patient Health Information(PHI) is only used for purposes of patient TPO (treatment, payment, and operations). (essential) **Required Qualifications:** 1. High School diploma or GED required. Bachelor's degree in Health Science preferred. 2. License Medical Assistant Certificate preferred., or Registration Certified Nursing Assistant preferred., or Certificate 1 EMT Basic License preferred., or Certificate 2 Phlebotomy Certificate preferred. 3. 0-1 years related work experience required. 4. Demonstrated Medical Assistant (MA) competencies within one year of hire. 5. Basic familiarity with computers. Ability to navigate at a basic level within web-based applications. **Preferred Qualifications:** 1. Certified Medical Assistant **Competencies:** 1. Team Work: Ability to work collaboratively in small teams to improve the operations of immediate work group by offering ideas, identifying issues, and respecting team members. 8. Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations. Age based Competencies: Employees in this job must be competent to provide patient care to the following age groups: Neonatal:Birth to 6 months, Youth: 6 months to 16 years, Young adult: 16-30 years, Middle Age: 30 - 60 years, Elderly: 60 - over. **Social/Environmental Requirements:** 1. Work requires close attention to task for work to be accurately completed. Intermittent breaks during the work day do not compromise the work. 2. Work routine is fairly consistent, but employee needs to be able to use judgment to respond to events several times a week. 3. POSITION SUMMARY
This position is responsible for assisting clinicians and nursing staff in providing medical care, as well as, implementing and evaluating direct patient care. This position utilizes specialized knowledge, judgment and skills to provide an excellent patient experience.
CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Prepares patient for exam and treatment by taking and recording vital signs, symptoms and other necessary measurements and recording chief complaint; documents pain scores as appropriate. Reports condition of patient which may be indicative of change in the patient's condition to the clinician.
2. Assists providers with exams and minor in-office procedures which could include taking patients' blood pressure, documenting respiration and heart rate/pulse, taking temperature, as well as performing phlebotomies, ear irrigation and EKG's. Acts as chaperon as needed. Uses universal blood and body fluid precautions at all times and personal protective equipment as needed. Responsible for prioritization of patient flow through clinical process.
3. Coordinates and manages patient care including pre-certifications, referrals, authorizations, prescriptions and scheduling of patients for clinic, hospital and other ancillary medical treatments and tests. Responsible for communicating test results to patient. Acts as a resource to clinician in order to provide optimal patient care. May administer medications in accordance with established policies and procedures or as directed.
4. Provides clerical support with patient/client notifications and documentation to include but not limited to complete medical records including labs, authorizations, X-Rays, hospital records and any previous care pertaining to each patient visit. 5. Maintains a clean, functional environment including cleaning and disinfection of equipment, exam rooms and storage areas. Performs basic maintenance of equipment and coordinates needed maintenance for prompt repairs.
6. Orders supplies as directed, stocks patient care areas. Medication ordering and tasks related to all medications (e.g. expired medications/equipment and recalls).
7. Develops and maintains effective communication mechanism with all external and internal customers. Exemplifies service orientation and the team concept in all contacts.
8. This position will complete all necessary on-boarding/orientation activities, including simulation training, as needed or directed.
9. This position works under the direct supervision of the providers. This position interacts with all levels of staff in a variety of departments, physicians, patients, families and external contacts, such as employees of other health care institutions, community providers and agencies, concerning the health care of the patient. Also interacts with physician's offices in order to report, ask for or clarify information. Prioritizes data from multiple sources to provide support for the response of the patient and family to changes in health status.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge. Completion of an approved medical assistant training program as defined by state regulations.

Job Description

**UPMC Western Maryland's Medical Oncology Department is looking for a full time Medical Assistant! This is position is designed to assist patients with assessments, preparing patients for exams, in addition to the responsibilities listed below. + Check schedules and organizing patient flow. Accompany patients to exam/procedure room. Assist patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc. Collect patient information/history; taking vitals, performing screenings per provider guidelines. Relay instructions to patients/families.
+ Send/receive patient medical records in accordance with Health Insurance. Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other state and federal regulations.
+ Prepare patient rooms, set up instruments and equipment according to department protocol. Clean exam/procedure rooms, instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control. Clean according to scheduled maintenance program and keeping appropriate records. Manage inventory of supplies; restocking exam/procedure rooms.
+ Comply with requirements of appropriate regulatory agencies (i.e. OSHA, CLIA, PA Department of Health). Maintain strict confidentiality related to medical records and other data. Comply with all UPMC Health System policies and procedures.
+ Perform phlebotomy, EKG's, and level one labs. Perform clinic procedures according to policy and procedure. Assist physicians with procedures. Document patient information into the medical record.
+ Answering calls and providing pertinent information including patient education as directed.
+ Obtain lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc. Complete forms/requisitions as needed. Schedule appointments. Verify insurance coverage and patient demographics. Prepare and managing charts to ensure information completed and filed appropriately. Other front office responsibilities, as required.
+ Under the direction and supervision of a physician, administer injectable medication and vaccines when appropriate.

**Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:**
+ CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
+ Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

A Medical assistant has accountability for providing care to patients in an ambulatory clinic setting. This will involve caring for patients with acute and chronic needs. A Medical Assistant will be responsible for communicating clearly with patients seeking care through different modalities including telephone and in-person interactions.

As a Medical Assistant at Intermountain Health, you will play a vital role in supporting our clinical team, ensuring our patients receive the best care by:
+ **Providing Patient Care:** Under the direction of the Clinician, providing care to patients by assisting the provider to gather information that is relative to the patient's visit and condition.
+ **Effective Communication:** Communicating clearly with patients seeking care through different modalities including telephone and in-person interactions.

**Minimum Qualifications**
+ Successful completion of a Medical Assistant Program (certification must be provided upon hire)
+ Or at least one year of Medical Assistant experience (verified upon hire)
+ Or current RN/LPN license to practice nursing in the state
+ Current Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers. Must be obtained prior to start date
+ Demonstrated basic computer skills involving word processing and data entry.
+ Professional manner and strong interpersonal and communication skills.
+ Ability to work collaboratively with patients and fellow caregivers to deliver the highest level of customer/patient satisfaction.
+ Ability to protect privacy, confidentiality, and Protected Health Information (PHI) of patients, members, and caregivers.
+ Utah Only: If certified with less than one year of MA experience, caregivers may attend a yearlong MA residency program
**Preferred** **Qualifications**
+ Experience in an outpatient clinic or other healthcare setting.
+ Computer literacy in using electronic medical records (EMR) systems and other relevant software.
+ Current national MA certification from one of the following national MA certifications or registrations: Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) of AMT, National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA), Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) of the AAMA
