This is a blended unit of med-surg and ICU patients.
We have 5 ICU beds and 27 med-surg beds.
ICU RNs may take 1-2 med-surg patients depending on acuity and volumes.
For example, an ICU RN may have 1 ICU patient with 2 med-surg patients.
Ventilated patients are typically assigned 1:1.
ICU patients are assigned 1:2-3 based on acuity.
Med-surg patient ratios are typically 1:5-6.
We also have Critical Care Techs on the unit.
Scheduling is flexible.
Bedside Shift Reporting and hourly rounding are required.
Utilization of AIDET is also a necessary practice.
Travelers are expected to assist with monitoring staffing throughout the shift.
They will need to adjust and modify staffing for the next shift as needed.
Travelers will help assign code blue teams and monitor staff from the previous day.
A daily report will need to be sent out to the house supervisor.
Travelers will receive all necessary information onsite.
Travelers are not trained or expected to work as charge nurses.
We care for a diverse patient population, including adolescents, adults, pediatrics, and geriatrics.
Common diagnoses in this unit include pneumonia, COVID-19, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, and COPD.
Special procedures may include cardioversions, transesophageal echocardiograms, and permanent pacemaker placements.
All RNs will be required to utilize hourly rounding and sign an attestation for compliance.
