The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) position is located in the Diagnostic Radiology Service Line located at the Chillicothe VA Medical Center. The AMSA performs duties related to the receipt, intake, and indexing of health and administrative information in accordance to VHA guidelines.

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

* Responsible for scheduling appointments, including interpreting and verifying provider orders/consultations in accordance with VHA national scheduling guidelines.
* Monitor the electronic wait list, pending, log of scheduled, recall reminder, delinquent recall.
* Monitor both inpatient and outpatient appointments for areas of responsibility.
* Verify and update demographics and insurance information.
* Interact with and promote kiosk usage and utilizing supported software.
* Process all emergency and nonemergency transfers to other VA facilities or private hospitals.
* Perform basic eligibility, copays and preauthorization requirements for specific coverage.
* Participate in team huddles and team meetings to manage and plan patient care.
* Set priorities and deadlines, adjusting the flow and sequencing of the work to meet team and patient's needs.
* Participate in quality assurance activities on an ongoing basis and recommend changes to improve programs when indicated.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year). Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior (work experience) or military service experience.

Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA

Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)

**Job Description Summary:**
The duties of this position includes but is not limited to accurate, precise, and timely patient test results for the diagnosis and management of human illness. Position utilizes automation and computerization, and manual methods. Responsible for quality control and instrument operation, maintenance and troubleshooting. May be involved in teaching and training, but not in a leadership position. Position handles blood, tissue, fecal matter, sputum, urine, spinal fluid and other body fluids. Specimens may be contaminated with infectious diseases including HIV and other blood borne pathogens.

The duties of this position includes but is not limited to: The performance of complex analysis of all body fluids and tissues. Determining the reliability of all analytic data before release as patient measurement for diagnosis and treatment. Interprets information to make judgmental decisions and troubleshoots technical procedures and instruments. Utilizes knowledge of medical correlation of data, laboratory parameters, physiologic factors, medication effects, and specific medical treatments to assess the validity of laboratory data. Uses appropriate testing techniques to evaluation new testing methodologies and instrumentation. Role models safety and infection control practices. Provides mentorship to new lab associates, medical laboratory technicians, and students.

Customer service to clinicians and clients. Must be comfortable and professional on the telephone, able to communicate with physician office staff and clinical staff, and laboratory associates. Must be able to communicate with patients and their families, and use service recovery where necessary.

Quality Assurance Functions and Equipment Maintenance Functions Performs quality control checks on each procedure, on reagents, stains, equipment, etc. Documents and interprets all QC data used by the technologists to determine validity of patient results and verify instrument performance. Documents and reviews maintenance logs to assure optimum system performance, guaranteeing valid data and eliminating costly, time-consuming equipment failures.

**Minimum Qualifications:**

**Additional Job Description:**
Four year Bachelor of Science Degree, and eligible to sit for the Board of Registry examination of the American Society of Clinical Pathologist or completion of all required course work for Bachelor's degree and eligible to sit for the ASCP exam. Superior customer service skills. Experience in an automated clinical laboratory
