Job Summary

The Medical Assistant (MA/MA Sr) is a healthcare professional and an essential member of the patient-centered healthcare team. The MA/MA Sr is instrumental in helping the patient feel at ease while collaborating with the provider throughout the patient's visit.

Licenses & Certifications and Educational Requirements

Medical Assistant (MA):

Education: High school diploma (or GED) required plus one of the following:

  • Completion of an MA program, or
  • Completion of an EMT-Basic course, or
  • Trained on the job MA AND one year experience in health care, or
  • Completion of an MA Apprentice program

Certification: American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Providers (BLS) or an AHA approved equivalent required within 90 days of hire.

Experience: 1 year of healthcare experience preferred.

Medical Assistant Senior (MA Sr):

Education: HS Diploma or GED is required.

Certification: American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Providers (BLS) or an AHA approved equivalent is required within 90 days of hire. Additionally, one of the following is required:

  • Military Medic/Corpsman training (must also obtain one of the certifications or licenses below within 6 months of hire), or
  • Certified/Registered Medical Assistant through one of the following:
  1. Credentialed in ABR-OE (Assessment-Based Recognition in Order Entry), or
  2. Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), or

    Key Responsibilities

    • Room patients using standard protocols to ensure optimal flow.
    • Perform clinical tasks: point-of-care testing, vital signs, vaccine administration, BP checks, ear flushes, phlebotomy, and assisting in procedures.
    • Handle administrative duties: medication refills, prior authorizations, MyChart messages, and medical paperwork within standard turnaround times.
    • Assist with scheduling support and referral tracking.
    • Provide patients with educational materials, instructions, and After Visit Summaries (AVS).
    • Document all patient care accurately and professionally in EPIC EMR.
    • Perform pre-visit planning and registry management.
    • Follow infection control and safety standards to ensure a safe patient care environment.
    • Support inventory control and equipment maintenance.
    • Obtain appropriate consent documentation for applicable procedures (within MA scope).
    • Float and cross-train across sites as needed to support clinic operations.
    • Escalate compliance or safety risks promptly to care team or leadership.
