Certified Medical Coder, OPAnchorage, Full-Time

Orthopedic Physicians Alaska seeks a highly skilled, upbeat, fast paced, dedicated and professional Certified Medical Coder & Orthopedic Surgery Coder to join our rapidly growing and dynamic team. Ideal Attributes
  • Certified CPC, COSC and/or CPMA (AAPC or AHIMA)
  • Physician Charge Coding (CPT, HCPC and ICD-10)
  • Experience with Orthopedic Surgery Procedure Coding

Please be prepared to take a coding test at the time of interview.

Representative Duties
  • Reviews notes from inpatient and/or outpatient encounters and codes them according to the documentation (assigns accurate CPT, HCPC and ICD-10 codes)
  • Posts charges when needed for services rendered
  • Audits chart documentation for quality purposes to ensure that provider coding and documentation is synchronous- provides communication of audit findings to department leadership as directed by management
  • Makes judicious decisions on which codes to assign in each instance, and function to a high level of accuracy
  • Introduces changes in procedure; CPT, HCPC and ICD-10 codes and educates staff on the use of new codes
  • Liaising with physicians and other parties in a professional and courteous manner to clarify information
  • Advises and trains physicians and staff on medical coding as requested by department leadership
  • Perform accurate, efficient Hospital Physician Consultation and Emergency Room as well as Orthopedic Surgery services coding when needed.
  • Be familiar with Infusion, Injection, Physical Therapy, Occupation Therapy, Massage Therapy, and different imaging modality, as well as physician services coding and chart documentation requirement
Job Requirements
  • Active Certified Professional Coding Certificate
  • Two (2) years of current coding experience (outpatient physician services)
  • Two (2) years of Evaluation and Management (E&M) services coding
  • Passed ICD-10 proficiency exam

  • Assists with proficiency testing and data collection required for laboratory accreditation and regulatory compliance.

  • Collects chain-of-custody urine drug screens and performs phlebotomy duties as required to support patient care needs.

  • Collaborates with team members to ensure shift duties and department responsibilities are completed efficiently and accurately.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or, Chemical, Physical, Biological, or Clinical Laboratory Science required or

  • Passing score on the Clinical Laboratory Technology Proficiency examination approved by HHS (HEW) required

  • 0-2 years of acute care experience required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of laboratory procedures, quality control protocols, and safety regulations.

  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues with laboratory instruments.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills to meet testing deadlines.

  • Proficient in using laboratory information systems and maintaining accurate records.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate effectively with healthcare staff.

  • Knowledge of population-specific competencies for all relevant patient demographics.

Licenses and Certifications

  • ASCP - Medical Technologist required or

  • Medical Laboratory Technologist (AMT) required or
