Position Summary

The Extra Help Medical Technologist I in Hematology performs a variety of tests of a moderately or highly complex nature on patient samples, and performs quality control for hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, stool, and body fluids procedures based on laboratory procedures and policies. Such Hematology Laboratory testing may be performed by manual methods involving technical, scientific knowledge, and interpretation skills; and by automated analyzers involving ability to maintain and troubleshoot. The Extra Help Medical Technologist I assists in training of laboratory personnel, new employees, medical residents and students in the principles and techniques of medical technology.The Hematology Laboratory includes the following discipline-specific areas: Complete Blood Counts Testing, Manual Differentials Testing, Hemostasis Testing, Urinalysis Testing, Body Fluid Analysis Testing, Automated, High Volume Testing, Miscellaneous manual Hematologic and Hemostasis Methods Testing.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs moderately and highly complex tests by various analyzers in the Laboratory and/or by manual methods on various specimen sources such as blood, urine, body fluids, stool, etc. using established procedures and policies.
  • Reviews test results before reporting using technical and scientific knowledge to recognize and verify result validity and clinical relevance.
  • Follows laboratory established procedures and policies, and notify approved care givers of critical results following compliance and HIPPA standards.
  • Performs established quality assurance procedures (quality control testing, instrument function checks and calibrations) maintains appropriate documentation and reports irregularities to supervisor.
  • Operates, troubleshoots, and resolves instrument's technical problems and documents corrective action whenever possible.
  • Responds appropriately to error flags for critical results, delta checks, required dilutions, and result patterns. Notifies physician(s) of life threatening results.
  • Assesses accuracy and validity of obtained test results by applying knowledge of relevant scientific principles, recognizes changes that are critical to patient care, identifies probable causes for irregular and atypical findings.
  • Receives a wide variety of patient specimens arriving at the laboratory for testing. Performs the procedures necessary to prepare specimens for testing or referral to other laboratories.
  • Maintains a neat, orderly and safe working environment in the laboratory while adhering to all guidelines of OHSA's Blood borne Pathogens Control Act.
  • Adheres to Costumer service guidance, interacts with physicians, patients, staff, visitors and customers via telephone conversations and in person in a professional and helpful manner.
  • Participates in CAP proficiency testing. Performs periodic proficiency (internal and external) testing, participates in data collection and monitoring of quality assurance monitors as determined by department and section policy. Completes Quality Assurance Reports. Participates in the laboratory Continuing Education (CE) program annually.
  • Performs resulting, verification, confirming, and other LIS laboratory related functions on patients results through the UI Hospital LIS and automation middleware information system including: instruments checks, status reports, and basic maintenance and recovery functions.
  • Assists in training of laboratory personnel, new employees, medical residents and students in the principles and techniques of medical technology.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications
    1. High school graduation or equivalent.
    2. Meets basic standards and qualifications for laboratory testing for general supervisory personnel under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), Subpart M, Section .

    Preferred Qualifications

    Knowledge of correct procedures for handling potentially infectious specimen material of patient origin so as not to contaminate self, coworkers or the work area.

    Able to identify problems of a technical and/or clinical nature, referring the problem to senior and/or supervisory staff in a timely manner.

    Work requires a complete understanding of the theoretical applications in Hematology, including cell identification.

    Ability to examine a slide and concentrate for long periods of time utilizing a microscope and physical ability to perform microscopic examinations and have normal color perception.

    Ability to make accurate observations.

    Ability to independently plan and complete work.

    A thorough knowledge and understanding of all quality control and safety procedures is essential.

    Able to maintain productive communication with peers, supervisors, health care staff and visitors.

    Understand the function of the medical laboratories in the health care environment.

    Have knowledge of the importance of the flexibility necessary for work performance within the laboratory setting and the importance of a professional appearance and attitude.

    Understand the applications and purpose of laboratory quality assurance programs and procedures.

    To provide continuous safety observation of patients identified to be at risk for causing injury to him/herself or to others. To function under the supervision of the registered nurse in providing general patient care in accordance with the individualized needs of the patient, and the standards of practice within the guidelines of the Illinois Nurse Practice Act and the mission and philosophy of Advocate. The Patient Care Companion recognizes the needs and behaviors of patients of various age groups and provides care in a manner that is age appropriate. The Patient Care Companion strives for patient-centered care which assures that the patient is treated holistically with dignity and respect.

    Major Responsibilities:
    Ensures a secure and safe environment by maintaining a continued awareness of safety hazards and observation of the patient.
    1)Follows established policies and procedures for precautions, i.e., suicide, seizure, falls, elopement, restraining, provides restraint alternatives when appropriate; i.e., diversional activities.
    2)Follows established policies and procedures for emergency plans and codes.
    3)Accompanies assigned patient at all times, i.e., walks in the hallway to various ancillary departments, bathroom, shower, etc.
    4)Never leaves assigned patient unattended, ensures that patient is continuously monitored before leaving room, i.e, breaks, end of shift, to accompany patient on transport.
    Provides general patient care duties that are specific to the patient(s) served as directed by the registered nurse.
    1)Provides am or pm care to include making occupied or unoccupied bed, bed bath, oral and denture care, shave back rub, and skin care.
    2)Assists patient with ordered activity, i.e., ambulation, getting up to chair and back to bed, positioning, etc.
    3)Assists with toileting needs of the patient including care of the incontinent patient and proper diaper usage; demonstrates awareness of patients with high risk of skin breakdown.
    4)Ensures special patient supplies and appliances are provided and maintained such as TED hose, sequential compression devices, K-pads, cooling mattresses, etc.
    5)When assigned to general floor duty, responds to call lights and communicates all patient requests in a timely manner to the registered nurse.

    Performs tasks related to meeting the nutritional needs of the patient.

    1)Reviews dietary order and tray to ensure the patient is receiving the proper diet, communicates need for reordering to the registered nurse.
    2)Assists patient with meals, feeding if needed
    3)Provides proper tray set-up and patient positioning with consideration to special needs.
    4)Assists patient in menu selection.
    5)Provides accurate information to registered nurse for intake/output.
    6)When assigned to general floor duty, assists in tray distribution and passing of waters/juices as directed by registered nurse; pick-up trays of patients who are not on intake/output or caloric monitoring.

    .Performs tasks related to meeting the nutritional needs of the patient.
    1)Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
    2)Communicates with patients, families, and other health professionals in a positive and respectful manner.
    3)Supports patient/family teaching by working with all members of the health care team and seeks out the registered nurse when clinical information is requested, notifies the RN when family questions arise.

    Contributes to the patient plan of care through the documentation of communication of patient needs and outcomes to the health care provider as appropriate.
    1)Documents patient information on Treatment Flowsheet (safety, cares and activity).
    2)Communicates patient needs and observed changes in assigned patients' behavior to RN caring for patient.
    3)Communicates a verbal change of shift report on assigned patients to RN caring for patient and oncoming Patient Care Companion.
    4)Acts as a patient/family advocate by providing comfort, assistance, and information as appropriate, assists in the orientation of the patient and family to the environment.
    5)Demonstrates awareness of the patient's plan of care, i.e., activity, diet, diversional needs, family and social issues.

    Performs tasks related to maintaining the integrity of patient care standards and efficient unit operations.
    1)Demonstrates ability to respond to emergency situations.
    2)Maintains and develops technical skills by attending mandatory yearly inservices.
    3)Practices within the policies and procedures of infection control by properly disposing of contaminated materials and utilizing proper attire when in direct contact with the patient in isolation.

    Education/Experience Required:
    High school diploma or GED equivalent. Current CPR.

    Ability to demonstrate a commitment to patient-focused care. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with established time constraints and in difficult situations. May be exposed to hazardous materials and life-threatening diseases. Ability to perform lifting/transfer activities related to patients (up to 50 lbs. may be required). Ability to work designated shifts including weekends and holidays. Ability to transport objects from one location to another. This position needs to recognize needs and behaviors of specific age groups of patients treated.
    If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

    **PURPOSE AND SCOPE:**
    Supports FMCNA's mission, vision, core values and customer service philosophy. Adheres to the FMCNA Compliance Program, including following all regulatory and FMS policy requirements.
    Functions as part of the hemodialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse in accordance with FMCNA policies, procedures, and training and in compliance with regulations set forth by the corporation, state, and federal agencies. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines. Assist in the maintenance of a safe and clean working environment. Supports the FMCNA commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and CQI Activities, including those related to patient satisfaction and actively participates in process improvement activities that enhance the likelihood that patients will achieve the FMC Quality Enhancement Goals (QEP).
    **DUTIES / ACTIVITIES:**
    CUSTOMER SERVICE:
    + Responsible for driving the FMS culture through values and customer service standards.
    + Accountable for outstanding customer service to all external and internal customers.
    + Develops and maintains effective relationships through effective and timely communication.
    + Takes initiative and action to respond, resolve and follow up regarding customer service issues with all customers in a timely manner.
    **PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES**
    PATIENT CARE:
    + Assist other health care members in providing patient specific detailed education regarding adequacy measures where appropriate - Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), and regarding disease process/access.
    + Welcome assigned patients and inquire as to their well-being since their last treatment. Report any complaints or observations to the nurse supervisor.
    + Evaluate vascular access for patency and report any unusual findings to nurse supervisor.
    + Obtain necessary pre and post treatment vital signs and weight. Report unusual findings to nurse supervisor.
    + Perform vascular access evaluation pre-treatment and report unusual findings to nurse supervisor.
    + Perform vascular access cannulation and report any difficulties in cannulation or unusual findings to nurse supervisor.
    + Perform administration of Heparin as delegated or as allowed by state law.
    + Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders including blood flow (QB) and dialysate flow (QD).
    + Evaluate intradialytic problems and provide intervention as prescribed by physician order or as directed.
    + Monitor patients' response to dialysis therapy and report any unusual findings to nurse supervisor.
    + Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion; perform all relevant functions necessary for the discontinuation of treatment - document.
    + Discontinue dialysis treatment according to established procedures,
    + Evaluate patient prior to termination of venous access - standing & sitting blood pressure.
    + Obtain Hemostasis and apply appropriate dressings.
    + Evaluate the patient for prior to discharge and report any unusual findings to nurse supervisor.
    + Perform and record Pre and Post dialysis evaluation, weight and vital signs with initial identification.
    + Responsible for calculating and entry of individual patients' dialysis machine programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal; treatment time; Sodium (Na) modeling; and UF modeling as prescribed.
    + Responsible for ensuring appropriate safety alarms are enabled, including Narrow Venous Limits (NVL) 160.
    + Record accurate and timely information regarding vital signs and treatment parameters onto the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initial identification.
    + Responsible for accurate documentation of information related to patient treatment including completion of Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and, if applicable, progress notes.
    + Report any significant information and/or change in patient condition directly to the nurse supervisor.
    + Observe patient, and conduct machine safety checks according to facility policy. Report any change or unusual findings to the nurse supervisor.
    + Perform and document any intervention for unusual patient status and document patients' response to intervention.
    + Evaluate patients' vascular access during treatment including arterial and venous monitoring pressures, provide appropriate intervention as needed, document and report any unusual findings to the nurse supervisor.
    + Obtain all prescribed laboratory testing and prepare specimens for collection.
    MAINTENANCE/TECHNICAL:
    + Maintain environmental integrity and aesthetics - ensure all areas are safe and clean.
    + Clean and disinfect dialysis machine surface, chair, equipment, and surrounding area between treatments according to facility policy.
    + Conduct all tasks necessary for preparation for dialysis treatment and document where appropriate.
    + Perform all required pretreatment dialysis machine alarm testing including Pressure Holding (PHT).
    + Initiate Solution Delivery System (SDS) system.
    + Ensure that all blood spills are immediately cleaned with appropriate disinfectant according to facility policy.
    + Prepare, organize, and efficiently utilize supplies and equipment to prevent wastage.
    CLERICAL & ADMINISTRATIVE:
    + Complete and document ongoing participation in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.
    + Enters all treatment data into the designated clinical application accurately and in a timely manner.
    + Review treatment sheets for completeness, ensure nursing signatures are documented, and ensure omitted entries are completed or corrected where appropriate.
    + Prepare initial patient chart for admission and compile paperwork for appropriate placement in chart.
    + Prepare lab requisitions for prescribed or stat Lab specimens according to laboratory destination.
    + Collect, label, appropriately prepare and store lab samples according required laboratory specifications.
    + Ensure collection of lab specimens by appropriate lab courier.
    OTHER:
    + Perform additional duties as assigned.
    **ADDENDUM FOR PATIENT CARE TECHNICIANS WORKING IN THE HOME PROGRAMS (NOT HOME ASSIST):**
    Assisting the HT RN:
    + May assist HT RN on Home Visit as directed
    + Reinforces PD / HHD education under supervision of qualified HT RN
    + Schedules and contacts patients regarding appointments
    + Weigh patient and obtain vital signs
    + Collect treatment records and review for completion. Notify RN of incomplete / missing records.
    + Cleaning and prepping treatment room; prep charts
    + Preparing lab tubes and requisitions & assisting with lab draw days both pre and post draw (PCT certified phlebotomy or per state regulations)
    + Clerical duties as assigned (faxing, mailing to physician offices etc.)
    + Obtain home hemo water sampling as directed by the HT RN
    + Set-up of the home hemo machine and PD Cycler.
    + Assist with exit site care when directed by HT RN.
    + Warm dialysate solution when directed by the HT RN
    + Draw dialysate solution for testing as directed by the HT RN
    + Creates and sends patient reminders (supply inventory for order, Kt/V collection, bringing meds to clinic visit for review)
    + Assembles/breaks down charts/thins charts
    + Maintains logs as directed and applicable
    + Inventory of Home Program
    + Maintains par levels of home department supplies
    + Files home patient packing slips/invoices

There is a two-person assist program and "material assist" devices for the heavier items.
    **EDUCATION**
