Job purpose
The Mental Wellness Specialist plays a central role in advancing the mental, emotional, and social well-being of system-impacted youth through a combination of individualized support, group facilitation, and community-driven wellness initiatives. In this role, you will work under the supervision of the Director of Community Wellness to support individuals facing behavioral, emotional, and life challenges, playing a key role in fostering safe, healing-centered, and growth-oriented environments for clients.
Ideal candidates for this position will be high-energy, responsible, organized, and deeply committed to supporting the mental health and overall well-being of youth and families. Candidates should demonstrate patience, flexibility, strong behavior management skills, and the ability to make sound decisions and take initiative in high-pressure situations. Successful applicants will bring experience in youth development, mental health support, and case management, and should feel confident engaging with diverse and system-impacted youth and families.
Duties and responsibilities
● Communicate student concerns and updates to the appropriate Voices program staff.
● Attend Probation, Department of Child Services (DCS) appointments, and court hearings as needed to support youth.
● Assist in designing and implementing behavior management strategies, social-emotional supports, and therapeutic interventions.
● Develop and maintain individualized case management plans tailored to client needs.
● Conduct mental health screenings and assessments; collect and document progress data.
● Provide consistent positive reinforcement and redirection to support goal achievement and desired behaviors.
● De-escalate emotionally charged situations and guide clients in practicing emotional regulation techniques.
● Collaborate with multidisciplinary partners—including probation officers, home-based workers, therapists, and social workers—to ensure coordinated and comprehensive care.
● Maintain accurate, up-to-date, and confidential documentation for each client.
● Offer direct support to clients in both individual and group settings.
● Perform additional duties as assigned by leadership to support program goals.
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
● Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Education, Psychology, Human Services, or a closely related field (required); advanced degree or relevant certifications are a plus.
● Minimum of 3 years of experience working directly with youth and families, particularly those who are system-impacted.
● Minimum of 3 years of experience facilitating group sessions, including life skills, social-emotional learning, or therapeutic support groups.
● Strong knowledge of behavior support strategies and evidence-based practices, including principles of healing-centered behavioral approaches, Motivational Interviewing, Strengths-Based Approaches, and Trauma-Informed Care.
● Demonstrated ability to engage youth using empathy, consistency, and cultural humility.
● Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport across diverse populations.

Job Summary
Student Counseling Services provide quality counseling interventions to Southern Miss students by promoting sound mental health and the coping skills necessary for successful pursuit of their educational and life goals. Our mental wellness counselors work in a spirit of collaboration within the Division of Student Affairs to support individual responsibility, personal growth, and wellness of all enrolled members of the student body.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Provide individual and group counseling for enrolled students.

Provide consultation services regarding mental wellness for the Southern Miss community, including students, parents, staff, faculty, and administration.

Provide emergency response services to the Southern Miss campus on a 24-hour, rotating basis.

Provide outreach, educational and prevention services regarding mental wellness to the Southern Miss campus.

Participates in the overall administration of SCS through attendance at staff meetings, case conferences, staff development, campus events, and contributions to the development of SCS policy and procedures and evaluation processes.

Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree from an accredited college or university in counseling, psychology, marriage and family therapy, social work or mental health degree. At least, one year of experience working in the mental health field. Must provide proof of either an active licensure, or provisional licensure, to provide mental health services in the state of Mississippi with designation of PLPC, LMFTA, or LMSW; or an active certification as a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) from the National Board for Certified Counselors.

Y4CC and MWSG follow a Collective Impact approach using Results Based Accountability and continuous improvement practices to carry out its mission. The Y4CC is working on reducing suicidal ideation and increasing mental thriving in youth with a special focus on LGBTQIA+ youth. Training, test cases, and clinical supervision of test cases will include about 20 hours a week.

This may include reminder phone calls, client satisfaction surveys, outreach efforts to re-engage clients, etc.

Utilize the Mental and Financial Wellness Everywhere Tool (mwTool), to screen clients for symptoms of common disorders (depression, anxiety, PTSD), severe disorders (psychosis, mania), substance use disorders, suicide, and financial stressors.

Based on mwTool results, match the type and severity of symptoms to one or more brief low-intensity counseling interventions or coordinate referral to a higher level of care (mental health specialist).

Offer and deliver brief structured counseling interventions with step-by-step guidance from provider facing apps specific to the client’s symptom severity and areas of need.

Provide direct coaching, education, and advocacy in linking, engaging, clients to get services through referrals in the community.

Collaborate with Comunilife Programs to host community engagement and mental wellness education workshops.

- Timely data reporting as requested
- Participate in quality assurance reviews to ensure quality care is provided

- Promote the onsite and EAP program through onsite meetings with managers, employees, employee resource groups, committees, etc.

- Understand organizational culture to guide program design
- Contribute to overall strategy of wellbeing programs that result in positive mental health changes for employees
- Advocate for organizational changes that reduce stress, burnout and provide mental health support for employees
- Collaborate with leadership and/or project sponsors to develop project structure, goals, and guiding principles.
- Escalates issues impacting the project or program to HR Leadership and/or project sponsors, as appropriate.
- Communicates project status to sponsors and stakeholders effectively and on a regular basis. Serves as a primary point of contact for project sponsors and other key stakeholders regarding project and project status.
- Updates and maintains all project plan documents and status reporting.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders to draft manuscripts and conference proposals to disseminate lessons learned
