Position Description:

Responsible for using internal, third-party, and public data sets to provide weather forecast guidance, with primary focus on short-term energy market activities.

Duties:

· Interpret meteorological data and forecasts from internal sources, third party forecast providers, and publicly available data to provide daily strategy guidance to Market Operations team

· Collaborate with third-party vendors on improving accuracy or quality of services

· Identify and alert management of high-impact weather events capable of increasing operational risk

· Coordinate with Field Operations team to schedule major service or outages during advantageous periods

· Review and report on accuracy of ISO and third-party forecasts.

· Develop and enhance tools used to communicate forecasts or weather risks to other business units

Qualifications:

· Graduate degree in meteorology, atmospheric sciences or a related technical discipline.

· Experience in Electric/Gas Utility industry

· Experience integrating various weather outlooks and briefing users on uncertainties and impacts.

· Experience forecasting one to seven-day ahead surface temperature and forecasting weather utilizing a wide variety of observational and model data, both at surface and upper air.

· Experience analyzing renewable power production (wind, solar, hydro) and how weather impacts those resources.

· Extensive knowledge of NWS system and demonstrated experience using National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) products

· Experience with long-term (month ahead or more) weather forecasting.

· Experience using Python, R, or other coding languages for data analysis, statistical analysis, and forecasting.

General Purpose

Provides routine and non-routine impacts based operational weather forecasts to the utility. Leads large projects to develop, deploy and improve operational forecasting methods and models. Guides and leads projects that improve operational decision-making during storm and fire weather events. Participates in cross functional teams, including other meteorologists in and outside the company, data scientists, project and product managers, leadership, and subject matter experts to develop data driven solutions. Oversees a wide range of meteorological data to provide continuously updated weather information from a variety of sources to better manage the impacts of weather on the electric distribution and transmission system to identified vulnerabilities. Takes the role of lead forecaster during periods of critical fire weather conditions and providing strategic meteorological support for operational and engineering projects designed to mitigate wildfire risk.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and disseminate operational weather reports prior to and during all types of significant weather events.
  • Integrate a wide range of meteorological data to provide continuously updated weather information to better manage the impacts of weather on the electric system and identified vulnerabilities.
  • Analyze surface observation data, satellite imagery, NEXRAD Doppler radar data, and Numerical Weather Predication data.

  • Respond to request for short-range weather predication.

  • Continually maintain and enhance procedures for monitoring the company’s weather network and associated alerting, including the siting of new weather stations.

  • Serve as a liaison between both the National Weather Service and Geographical Area Coordination Center and the company.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Atmospheric Science, Environmental Sciences or a related field; or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.

+ Associate Professor: $174,000 - $41,000 per annum
+ Full Professor: 171,800 - 480,000 per annum

**What you'll be working on:**
You will collaborate with the confidential X Project team to apply advanced ML techniques to problems in the weather/climate space.
Your goal will be to understand the project's challenges and:
+ Suggest a number of ways in which ML and other techniques can apply to those challenges.
+ Prototype solutions.
+ Work closely with team members to implement solutions.
+ Learn Moonshot thinking, attend colloquium and tech talks.
+ Engage with the X Internship community during the program.

**How you will make 10x impact:**
+ Lead and participate in cutting-edge research and application in artificial intelligence applied to problems in the climate/weather space.
+ Develop, implement, and deploy robust, scalable ML/AI solutions for climate/weather applications.
+ Contribute to code reviews, establish best practices for ML engineering, and optimize code for performance and scalability.
+ Demonstrate adaptability by rapidly learning and applying AI/ML techniques to new and diverse problem areas as projects evolve.
This project aims to push the limits of science and modeling as we know them and to prove how ML can radically accelerate our understanding of the world

**What you should have:**
+ Active PhD program in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Atmospheric/Oceanic Science or a related technical field.
+ Working experience with Deep Learning Models and data pipelines.
+ Working experience with Atmospheric/Oceanic numerical models (such as WRF or ROMS).
+ Fluent in Python, ML APIs (Tensorflow, Pytorch or JAX)
+ Very strong analytical skills. Ability to gather and analyze large quantities of information, and turn them into insightful business recommendations
+ Good at problem stating and problem solving, and turning ambiguous problem spaces into radical solutions. Must be able to break down problems independently
+ Can do attitude, willing to learn new tools and content to become an effective thought partner with project teams
+ Excellent communication skills i.e experience writing strategy docs, experience delivering presentations, and a general openness to liaise with senior external partners
+ Motivated by making the world a better place through technology, and wanting to be part of a team that makes this happen
**It'd be great if you also had these:**
+ An ability to thrive on ambiguity, setting own goals and effectively delivering them in a fast-changing environment
+ Adept at influencing without authority, working cross-functionally with different teams in order to drive decision making

US base salary range for this position is $109,000 - $150,000 + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. TheDepartment of Atmospheric Scienceat Colorado State University is a large academic and research department in the Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering. We currently have twenty faculty members, ninety graduate students, over seventy full-time researchers and postdoctoral fellows, and an outstanding and dedicated support staff, that comprise one of the most research-active units at the university. The department conducts more than 15M in externally sponsored research each year and is nationally ranked near the top of its field.
Position Summary
Working with a faculty adviser,Postdoctoral Fellowswill conduct specialized research in one or more areas of Atmospheric Science,including atmospheric chemistry; climate and atmosphere-ocean dynamics; cloud microphysics, severe storms, and mesoscale meteorology; data assimilation, machine learning, and causal discovery; education and human resources; global biogeochemical cycles and ecosystems; and radiation and remote sensing. The research may range from theoretical to applied and involve the use of measurement and/or modeling approaches. This position will also summarize findings and publish research results in journals and present findings at scientific meetings and conferences.
