PURPOSE AND SCOPE:  

Fresenius Medical Care Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) research and development (R&D) is currently hiring for the Microbiology Lab Research Associate position to be based at the Renal Research Institute (RRI) in NYC. This on-site position requires a commitment of at least 20-30 hours per week , with a minimum of 4 days per week , and is expected to least for 12 months , with the potential for an extension based on needs. Candidates with a bachelor's degree in microbiology or a related field are encouraged to apply, and a master's degree is preferred. The selected associate will actively contribute to bacterial culturing, experiment design and execution, and data analysis as part of the dynamic R&D team. Proficiency in lab techniques, strong microbiology knowledge, and dedication to safety and ethical practices are essential. Independence, effective communication and problem-solving skills will be crucial for collaborative success in this exciting research opportunity. 

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:  

• Culturing and Maintenance : Inoculate and maintain bacterial cultures, ensuring proper growth conditions and viability. 

• Experimental Design and Execution : Collaborate on experimental design and execute experiments to address research questions. 

• Data Collection and Analysis : Record data, analyze results, and contribute to the interpretation of findings. 

• Quality Control : Implement and adhere to quality control measures to ensure reproducibility. 

• Troubleshooting : Identify and address issues that may arise during microbiological experiments. 

• Communication and Documentation : Maintain detailed records, effectively communicate results, and contribute to team discussions. 

• Administrative Support : Assist in coordinating with suppliers, managing orders and ensuring the procurement of lab equipment, chemicals as well as other necessary materials necessary for research or operations. Collaborate on establishing essential resources for study projects.  

• Other duties as assigned  

EDUCATION:  

Bachelor’s degree (advanced degree is preferred) in microbiology, cell/molecular biology, or a similar discipline preferred.  

EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED SKILLS:  

• Basic microbiological knowledge including microbial growth conditions, nutritional requirements, and metabolism 

• Proficiency in establishing and maintaining sterile working conditions to maintain the integrity of samples & experiments. 

• Skill in using a laminar flow hood and other sterile techniques 

• Experience in preparing various types of bacterial growth media 

• Competence in inoculating,

• , and maintaining bacterial cultures 

• Familiarity with laboratory equipment such as incubators, shakers, and spectrophotometers 

• Ability to maintain organization and accuracy of experimental procedures and records 

• Keeping a lab notebook in a well-organized manner 

• Adherence to standard laboratory protocols to ensure compliance and accuracy in operations 

• Understanding of biological waste disposal procedures 

• Ability to troubleshoot issues related to laboratory instrumentations and addressing challenges related to microbiology assessments

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:  

Physical Demands:  

• Ability to stand, sit, or walk for extended periods while performing laboratory tasks. 

• Frequent use of hands and fine motor skills for handling laboratory instruments, pipetting, and using a computer. 

• Occasional lifting or moving of laboratory equipment or supplies weighing up to 25 pounds. 

• Visual acuity for detailed observations, including (but not limited to) microscopical work and reading small print or digital screens. 

Working Conditions:  

• Work is performed in a laboratory environment with exposure to potential biological, chemical, or physical hazards. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) is provided and required. 

• May involve exposure to refrigerated or temperature-controlled environments for sample storage

The Laboratory Technical Supervisor assists Manager and Administrative Director of the department with the day to day operations of the hematology section/department which includes: managing personnel, maintain consistent staffing levels, developing and monitoring daily quality control, quality assurance and proficiency testing programs; developing and evaluating laboratory methodologies, protocols and techniques; overseeing care, maintenance, and utilization of department equipment, supplies, and inventories. Performs clinical testing as needed. Prepares and develops department for accrediting agency inspections.

Job Functions: 

1. Supports Managers and Administrative Director in personnel activities that may include interviewing, work allocation, orientation and training, staff development, problem resolution, evaluating performance (conducts annual feedbacks), making recommendations for personnel actions, and motivating employees to achieve peak performance. Is responsible for their employee’s output and conduct. 

2. Understands laboratory methods, demonstrates knowledge of pathological processes with correlation of disease states and test results. Independently performs specimen processing and testing to include moderate and high complexity testing (as appropriate per facility). Satisfactorily completes competency checklist for this position. May administer quality control and calibration of instrumentation where applicable. 

3. Assures compliance with accrediting agencies; understands and applies CQI principles; anticipates needs and develops, implements, and evaluates quality assurance programs, provides corrective action and documentation. 

4. Develops and evaluates laboratory methodologies, procedures and techniques in the area of clinical specialty.

 5. Acts as a resource to customers, both within the department and outside the department, on testing methods and procedures, and laboratory operations, safety and training. Functions as laboratory liaison and contact person in the absence of other management personnel.

Microbiology Technologist / Microbiologist /MicroTechnologist in HCA Healthcare Lab Service Line performs both stat and routine microbiology and/or serology testing under the guidance of a laboratory supervisor, manager, or director. This role is critical in specimen processing, testing, and quality control, ensuring compliance with department policies, regulatory requirements, and accreditation standards. The Microbiology Technologist uses theoretical knowledge of laboratory medicine, along with independent judgment and problem-solving skills, to deliver timely and accurate results. Support the department in achieving its goals for service excellence, quality, regulatory compliance, financial performance, patient satisfaction a healthy work environment, and the seamless integration of department and multiple hospital activities.  

DUTIES INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO:  

• Independently perform specimen processing, stat and routine microbiology, serology, and infectious disease testing with precision. 

• Ensure timely and compliant specimen processing and testing protocols are followed. 

• Conduct preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment to ensure optimal performance. 

• Apply principles of laboratory medicine and exercise independent judgment to guarantee accurate test results and proper equipment functionality. 

• Troubleshoot issues and implement corrective actions to resolve problems effectively. 

• Adhere strictly to quality control and quality assurance policies to maintain the highest standards. 

• Actively participate in Continuous Quality Improvement initiatives to enhance laboratory processes. 

• Support departmental objectives related to service, quality, regulatory compliance, and patient satisfaction. 

• Serve as a valuable resource to peers and customers, offering guidance and expertise. 

• Assist in the orientation, training, and competency documentation of department personnel.

• Complete all necessary records and documentation pertaining to patient results accurately. 

• Performs stat procedures within established turnaround time targets to ensure timely results. 

• Review pending logs (OSR) and result logs, addressing any outstanding workload or communicating needs to staff relief. 

• Perform quality control procedures as per protocol and complete all required documentation meticulously. 

• Take appropriate corrective action when results fall outside acceptable guidelines. 

• Operate equipment correctly and perform periodic maintenance according to schedule to maintain functionality. 

• Perform equipment troubleshooting to resolve basic equipment malfunctions efficiently. 

• Assist in monitoring reagents and supply inventories, utilizing them appropriately to prevent shortages. 

• Handle all problem and/or critical laboratory specimens/test results according to established procedures. 

• Communicate emergency and/or critical value test results to physicians or nurses via telephone promptly. 

• Adhere to all safety policies and procedures to maintain a safe working environment. 

• Protect sensitive and confidential information, ensuring patient privacy including adherence to company policies and standards regarding security protocols. 

• Complete assigned courses and training on an annual basis to stay updated on best practices. 

• Be available to work during disasters, supporting the laboratory's essential functions. 

• Assist in the review and modification of department policies and procedures as requested to improve processes. 

• Perform duties of a Complex Specimen Processor as required, demonstrating versatility. 

• Participate in department-related projects and perform other duties as assigned, contributing to team goals. 

• Prepare and examine specimens using various microscopy techniques. 

• Culture and identify microorganisms from clinical samples. 

Perform antimicrobial susceptibility testing to determine effective treatment options.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:  

• National Certification as a Medical Technologist required– AMT / ASCP certification acceptable. Non-certified individuals must obtain certification within one year of hire. 

• State license where required(CA, FL, GA, HI, LA, MT, NV, NY, ND, RI, TN, WV).

Microbiology Technician / Microbiology Laboratory Technician in HCA Healthcare Lab Service Line perform both routine and stat clinical microbiology and/or serology testing under the guidance of a Medical Technologist and the direction of a Laboratory Supervisor, Manager, or Director.
