NSC Staffing is actively seeking Marine Electricians (2 nd Class) to join our team in Norfolk, VA This role supports Journeyman/1st Class Electricians in shipboard electrical installation, troubleshooting, and repair work (600 volts and below). Candidates must have strong knowledge of electrical theory, blueprint reading, and shipyard safety requirements.
Position Overview:
As a Marine Electrician (Improver / 2 nd Class), you will assist in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment aboard naval and commercial vessels. This position requires knowledge of electrical theory, shipboard systems, and the ability to work in confined spaces, at heights, and in challenging shipyard environments while ensuring safety and compliance with OSHA standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist Journeyman/1st Class Electricians with installation, troubleshooting, and repair of shipboard electrical systems (600V and below).
- Run cables, fabricate terminations/connectors, and harness cables aboard vessels.
- Prepare work areas, drill holes, grind surfaces, and inspect cableways/electrical equipment.
- Test circuits for continuity, shorts, and grounds under supervision.
- Inspect connections, disconnect devices, and control wiring.
- Assist with repair and maintenance of telephones, circuits, and associated equipment.
- Support installation of new power and lighting circuits.
- Perform lock-out/tag-out procedures under guidance.
- Provide quality work and Objective Quality Evidence (OQE) as required by specifications.
- Maintain a clean and safe work area; comply with OSHA and company safety protocols.
- Adhere to PPE requirements including hard hat, safety glasses, respirator, fall protection, and other safety gear.
Qualifications & Experience:
Required:
- Minimum 3 years electrical installation and repair experience (marine/shipyard preferred).
- Working knowledge of Ohm's Law and its application.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, electrical diagrams, and Navy standards manuals.
- Understanding of IEE, ABS, Coast Guard, and manufacturer technical manuals.
- Ability to operate shop equipment, portable power tools, and hand tools.
- Proficiency in U.S. standard and metric system measurements.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
- Prior shipyard or Navy vessel electrical experience.
- Familiarity with Work Authorization Forms (WAFs).
- Knowledge of Standard Items.
Physical Requirements:
- Lift/push/pull up to 75 lbs occasionally and 20 lbs frequently .
- Prolonged standing (2-3 hours), bending, squatting, crouching, crawling, and kneeling.
- Ability to climb ladders, scaffolding, and ramps safely.
- Work at heights above 12 feet using ladders, scaffolds, or manlifts.
- Enter confined spaces (18" x 36" openings) for extended periods.
- Good balance and hand coordination to carry/operate tools.
- Respond to visual, verbal, and audible commands.
- Tolerance for noisy, smoky, hot, cold, or humid environments.
Work Environment:
- Shipyard and vessel environments with exposure to weather, noise, dust, and moving machinery.
- Work in confined spaces, at heights, and on uneven surfaces.
- PPE is mandatory at all times.
- May be required to work overtime, evenings, or weekends as assigned.
