Summary The Medical Instrument Technician (MIT), Ultrasound Sonographer, operates diagnostic ultrasound equipment that uses high frequency sound waves and other diagnostic techniques to produce cross sectional and two- and three-dimensional images of internal organs and body structures. The Ultrasound Technician operates independently when performing highly detailed and complex ultrasound examinations; working in collaboration with the Radiologists for help providing a final interpretation. Responsibilities Major duties include, but are not limited to: Performs ultrasound examinations independently. At this level the technician is required to perform a full range of procedures including special complicated examinations for which there are no standard instructions. This position requires proper alignment and position of the patient for the best test results. Sets up and adjusts the ultrasound equipment to meet the need the condition of the examination and patient. Move and adjust depths and types of scan in accordance with procedures and perform operator preventive maintenance and care of equipment. Perform diagnostic ultrasound examinations on multiple areas of the body, including, but not limited to, abdomen for tumors, stones, cysts, abscesses, hematomas, inflammatory lesions, such as pancreatitis, and sizes of organs and their location, evaluations of abdominal aorta for aneurysm and/or dissection, vascular ultrasound venous studies to r/o Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT), and Carotid artery examination. Performs a wide range of Diagnostic Abdominal Ultrasound examinations to include but not limited to the: Liver, Gallbladder, Pancreas, Appendix, Spleen, Kidneys, Bladder, Aorta, Portal vein, Doppler studies of blood flow to and from the major organs, this includes imaging of the scrotum and testicles. Performs Ultrasound examinations of the female pelvis to include both transabdominal and transvaginal imaging of the Vagina, Uterus, Ovaries, Fallopian Tubes, and surrounding anatomy. Knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy to receive and interpret physician requests for routine, standardize ultrasonography procedures. Set up and adjust the ultrasound equipment to meet the conditions of the examination and the patient and to operate the equipment for standard/complex procedures. Interact with patients explaining procedures and positioning the patient for the procedure. Interviews patient obtaining pertinent medical history as it pertains to the procedure to be performed. Explains to competent patients the rationale of procedures and instructions on how to complete the procedure and reports patient history to interpreting radiologists. Individuals in this assignment assume full administrative and professional responsibility for planning and directing the work of subordinate technicians. Typically these duties include assigning and evaluating the work of subordinate; providing diagnostic ultrasound technician services in more complex cases; reviewing and making recommendations regarding new and emerging procedures; providing instruction and training to new staff; interviewing candidates for positions; recommending selections, advancements, promotions; evaluating performance; taking disciplinary action when necessary; and identifying educational or training needs. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: 1. Job Description Summary: The duties of this position includes but is not limited to accurate, precise, and timely patient test results for the diagnosis and management of human illness. Position utilizes automation and computerization, and manual methods. Responsible for quality control and instrument operation, maintenance and troubleshooting. May be involved in teaching and training, but not in a leadership position. Position handles blood, tissue, fecal matter, sputum, urine, spinal fluid and other body fluids. Specimens may be contaminated with infectious diseases including HIV and other blood borne pathogens.

Responsibilities And Duties:
  1. 55% Uses critical thinking, academic theory, facilitation and leadership abilities, and advanced customer service skills. Examples include but are not limited to: The performance of complex analysis of all body fluids and tissues. Determining the reliability of all analytic data before releasing as patient measurement for diagnosis and treatment. Interpreting information to make judgmental decisions and troubleshooting technical procedure and instruments. Utilizing knowledge of medical correlation of data, laboratory parameters, physiologic factors, medication effects, and specific medical treatments to assess the validity of laboratory data. Using appropriate testing techniques to evaluate new testing methodologies and practices. Demonstrating safety and infection control practices. Providing mentorship to new lab associates and students.
  2. 15% Customer service to clinicians and clients. Must be comfortable and professional on the telephone, able to communicate with physician staff office, clinical staff, and all laboratory associates. Must be able to communicate with patients and their families, using service recovery when necessary.
  3. 20% Quality assurance functions and equipment maintenance functions. Performs quality control checks on each procedure, equipment, reagents, stains, etc. Documents and interprets all QC data used by technologists to determine validity of patient results and verify instrument performance. Documents and reviews maintenance logs to assure optimum system performance, guaranteeing valid data and eliminating costly, time-consuming equipment failures.
  4. 5% Continuing Education and Competencies. Remains current in field. Trains new employees and students. Maintains competencies, mandatory education requirements (ACE).
  5. 5% Miscellaneous Duties. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree (Required)ASCP - American Society for Clinical Pathology - American Society for Clinical Pathology
