Job Title: Dialysis Technician Profession: Dialysis Technician Specialty: Staff Augmentation Duration: 26 weeks Shift: Day Hours per Shift: 6:15 AM - 2:15 PM Experience: Minimum years of experience required Description: Prepares dialysate according to established procedures and patient prescription. Obtains and documents pre-dialysis vital signs including weight and temperature. Inspects patient dialysis access and initiates dialysis following unit protocol and patient prescription. Measures, calculates, and adjusts blood flow rates according to established protocols and prescription. Administers anticoagulant according to unit protocols and prescription. Changes fluid removal rate and patient position, and administers Normal Saline as directed. Monitors vital signs and patient condition, documenting observations appropriately. Documents patient treatment parameters and communicates patient conditions and issues to RNs. Monitors patients and equipment, responds to alarms and adjusts treatment parameters as defined. Responds appropriately to dialysis-related emergencies such as hypotensive episodes and blood leaks. Discontinues dialysis and establishes hemostasis following unit protocol. Obtains and records post-dialysis vital signs, including weight and temperature. Verifies absence of residual sterilants. Takes fluid samples or other specimens for testing and prepares them for shipping. Discards dialysis supplies and sanitizes the equipment according to protocols. Communicates emotional, medical, psychosocial, and nutritional concerns to the RN when needed. Under the direction of a registered nurse, monitors and documents the status of vascular accesses. Reinforces treatment care with the patient. Ensures patient has adequate patient care supplies and monitors inventories. Assists nursing staff in administering basic treatments. Maintains professional conduct, good communication skills, and confidentiality in patient care. Participates in the multidisciplinary process. Reviews lab work and physician orders. Performs basic clinical procedures. Readies the dialysis equipment before treatment and cares for the equipment after treatment. Tests monitors and machine functions, including alarms, conductivity, and temperature. Sets monitors and alarms according to unit protocols. Completes flow sheets to verify patient documentation. Complies with agency policies and procedures in accordance with regulations for patient care. Participates in quality assurance and cost containment programs. Participates in individual and group projects as directed by management. Other duties as assigned.

The duties of this position includes but is not limited to accurate, precise, and timely patient test results for the diagnosis and management of human illness. Position utilizes automation and computerization, and manual methods. Responsible for quality control and instrument operation, maintenance and troubleshooting. Position handles blood, tissue, fecal matter, sputum, urine, spinal fluid and other body fluids. Specimens may be contaminated with infectious diseases including HIV and other blood borne pathogens.
Responsibilities And Duties:
1. 55%
Uses critical thinking, academic theory, facilitation and leadership abilities, and advanced customer service skills. Examples include but are not limited to: The performance of complex analysis of all body fluids and tissues. Determining the reliability of all analytic data before releasing as patient measurement for diagnosis and treatment. Interpreting information to make judgmental decisions and troubleshooting technical procedure and instruments. Utilizing knowledge of medical correlation of data, laboratory parameters, physiologic factors, medication effects, and specific medical treatments to assess the validity of laboratory data. Using appropriate testing techniques to evaluate new testing methodologies and practices. Demonstrating safety and infection control practices. Providing mentorship to new lab associates and students.

Customer service to clinicians and clients. Must be comfortable and professional on the telephone, able to communicate with physician staff office, clinical staff, and all laboratory associates. Must be able to communicate with patients and their families, using service recovery when necessary.

Quality assurance functions and equipment maintenance functions. Performs quality control checks on each procedure, equipment, reagents, stains, etc. Documents and interprets all QC data used by technologists to determine validity of patient results and verify instrument performance. Documents and reviews maintenance logs to assure optimum system performance, guaranteeing valid data and eliminating costly, time-consuming equipment failures.

Continuing Education and Competencies. Remains current in field. Trains new employees and students. Maintains competencies, mandatory education requirements (ACE).
